Very good videos. It is interesting. I have seen several of these sand barge carrying maybe 20 - 30 tons of water or more. If they pumped that out of the cargo space, that might be what makes the difference on whether to get through,
Big barge had the horsepower and the last barge had some colourful flowers on the stern to add a touch of homeliness. Very nice. Do the crews live onboard their barges?
Thank you for watching the video. They still live on the boat with limited space. They still have a home on the mainland, but for a few days they will sail home and then move on.
Another brilliant video. It seems so dangerous to have the boats so low, I imagine this is the only hurdle they’ll encounter on their journey.

What's needed here is a steel cable pully system that you clip the boat front and it winches you through the gates, aiding the engine... There's a high enough water flow to generate the energy free for this system!

Thank you for watching this video. This boat carries sand. Its main component is sand, but it contains mud impurities. This sand is taken from a very large river used to fill ponds, lakes ... and do some other work. I have a few videos on how to bring sand to the shore you can find it in my channel. Thanks.

I have seen many video's over this dam now. Why is this problem still unsolved? It's seems so easy to do. Many suggestions have I seen in the comments. Does this prove that the government isn't interested in good, fast and save transportation? In the Netherlands all off these boats (even that big one) would have taken out off the water until they were capable and save to pass the dam. We probably would not build it this way though.
I know it sounds over regulated in my country, but we don't have those situations over here in the professional rivertransport.

A lot of these boats are overloaded looks very unsafe it’s amazing the skippers did fairly well
For those barges on the river where they have to go through the dam gates on a regular basis, I think the barge owner needs to have bigger turbo's installed on the engine. All they need is just a few more revolutions per minute to get through. It amazes me how many barges and other boats are always lined up waiting to take their turn. It gets really crowded there!

Why don't they nose one boat behind another? Make a push pad on back of one and the front of another. When the first boat gets in enough currant that it can't go forward the second boat that is in slower water can push and when the first boat gets through it can help pull the second boat.

I have seen many comments about solving the problem of barges almost making it through but just need a little more force/power. So they would need to make three attempts, and still may not make it though. The simplest solution (that In have not seen yet suggested) would require the cooperation of the barge operators. Once a barge is through the gate, it has much available power to carry it forward. If this barge then offers a tow line to the one behind it, that will help the second barge to clear the gates. Second barge lets go of the tow line from the first one, and lets out its own tow line for the third barge, and so on. Everybody would pass through like clockwork, I think. Tow line would need to be at least as long as the barge offering the tow. Has this been tried and found not to work?
