+JLConawayII I forced a professor to reword his exam rules when I brought in mechanical calculators and and a solar-reflector microfilm reader... It previously was simply "No electronic devices", but now is something along the lines of "No unapproved devices".
This device is astonishing! But this guy... you could have him explain to us how a spoon works for half an hour and I would still be delighted to listen!
"You see, there's a positive gaussian curvature over here [proceeds to draw on spoon] and a negative one over here, and if you twist the handle and attach it to the paraboloid, you have a Möbius strip. Take another spoon and twist the handle in the opposite direction and add them together, and you have a Klein bottle, which is ABSOLUTELY NIFTY!"

I regret that I can only like this once. I do so with all of my heart: One emphatic thumbs up for Cliff Stoll and his inexhaustible fervor and love for all manner of thingamajigs.
He payed WHAT!?!? $75 omg I would expect it to be worth at LEAST $5k how many are still around working? If they are rare I would say it should be worth even more! No one wants to collect this???
I couldn't be more disinterested with the topic of this video. But this guy's unbridled enthusiasm for an old mechanical calculator is just so infectious, I can't bring myself to look away.
+Niels Schellekens Has the same charm as Simon Pampena and Dr James Grime. They're all mesmerized by math and it really translates over to the person theyre talking to
+Obi-Wan Kannabis He _is_ a character but I actually don't love him. I don't even like him much. I understand why some people do but he's just a bit _de trop_ for my taste. Interesting video though.
I want to see Matt do a "calculator unboxing" with this beast. Either that, or I want to see somebody whip this thing out in a board meeting and start crunching numbers.
Penny Lane Now, first of all I'm not "handing out" genius certificates. I'm just a random guy with a random opinion. Furthermore, this man is able to actually understand AND repair such old mechanical machines. I just think you need to be a bit clever to do that. Moreover, he makes money on selling freaking Klein bottles! KLEIN BOTTLES! Yes, you must be a genius to be able to make money of of that sort of thing.
The Raven I'm not saying he's not clever and I'm not even saying he's not a genius. I'm just saying that we've seen enough to see that he's quite intelligent but we haven't seen enough to call him a genius. That's my "random opinion" anyway ;)
DeathNikki I think they're trying to get at the fact that they can comprehend and be impressed by a mechanical calculator, but computers are too impressive for their amazingness to be comprehended. Telling them they just want to be edgy is condescending. Maybe you just want to be edgy by telling people they are wrong about something subjective.
I remember seeing one of this in the Deutsches Museum in Munich around 2017. It even had the "multiplication pillars block" outside in a separate display
+zimri19 Nah.... i guess it would destroy his world.... but i want to see him.... Taking his calculator to the Supermarket and start recalculate his bill.
Antique Road Show - Univesity Professor Edition. I love this guy so much. His enthusiasm is intoxicating. He could read me the phone book and by the end i'd probably be bouncing out of my chair with excitement.

Ergonomics: 10 - It has handles, it only weights 60 or 70 pounds, its smaller than a piano, what do you want more. Cred: 10 - Like the guy in the video said, you can't get cooler than that. Durability: 10 - Just look at how fast he is calculating, it also survived a fall from several centimeters.
+Wargon Well it is more durable than that. I will bet my money that it survives almost anything falling on it. And just imagine how screwed one's life would become if you accidentally drop this calculator on his foot. I would give 100 for such durability.
That is such a rad machine. I'm giddy watching it work. BTW: Thanks for the Kleinstien (bought one almost 10 years ago)! I've drank a surprising amount of beer out of it!

Every physics/math professor needs one of these, so when someone forgets their calculator they can give them this to use instead.
Genius!
+JLConawayII That's a nice way to be evil.
+JLConawayII I forced a professor to reword his exam rules when I brought in mechanical calculators and and a solar-reflector microfilm reader... It previously was simply "No electronic devices", but now is something along the lines of "No unapproved devices".

this needs to happen
He did explain pizza :)
I presume this is the original, which he retrieved with his Delorean.
+WrathOfMega haha! Now that's what I call a great comment!
No, it's the original that he delivered and sold to the bank in his deLorian. It then went the long way round until he could buy it back at scrap price, while the original sale money accrued interest in the same bank. Genius!
Either that or he opened a tear leading to some technology museum.

How can you not love this guy?
You don't find him irritating and feel that "eccentricness" is just put on.
+Adam Harrington Not at all put on.

+Adam Harrington It's a love it or hate it type of personality, no middleground.

This is your brain on math. Math, not even once.
Unfortunately I'm a math addict.
win!
+Afro Samurai we're going to have to put you through a square-root-of-12 step program
Yea... Helluvadrug...
Instead of meth, do math. It'll mess you up twice as much

+KinRedysko Indeed. Very clever individuals existed throughout human history. Makes one wonder what wasn't recorded for our edification today.
FTFY "...with what apparently was called FINGERS!?!?"
I dont think so, as you see 100 years ago they used their finers just as we today
but from 100 from now, we'd just use voice commands.

actually I think it can do decimals, so the accuracy score should be more like e^2
Gold
+Cadde Let's not try that one...
+seahawk124 *Cred*: Roughly 10^6
This guy is probably a great teacher. I think he might actually be made of pure enthusiasm.
Most accurate description I have ever heard about him! :D
+Geldarion Degana (The Fanatical Swordsman) Fortunately, he has "contained" his enthusiasm in a klein bottle. Ponder that ;D
Animuldok No, no, no! He has contained his enthusiasm *OUT*side a klein bottle!
I think it's cool how someone was able to build a working calculator with no electricity, no circuits, only gears.
derek7717
Professor Matt Parker had a team that built a calculator that did basic addition from a load of dominoes.
Well electronics and circuit is just a miniature gear...but yeah, it is amazing
This is honestly one of the most entertaining videos in a while; his enthusiasm is just so captivating!
I regret that I can only like this once. I do so with all of my heart: One emphatic thumbs up for Cliff Stoll and his inexhaustible fervor and love for all manner of thingamajigs.
Excitement level of this guy is over 9000

You. I like you
I love this guys enthusiasm
its a little annoying
He looks like a mad scientist
He reminds me of Doc Brown xD
Wait wait wait wait WHAT! You sell klein bottles for 100 bucks each and this didnt even cost you 80?! You sir are a genius in economics
+red toasti At that time, dollar had more value than it has now
+Jonathan Krillington it would be 270~285 dollars in 2016 according to some websites.
+red toasti Dollars cost _way_ more back in the day, as most currencies. More real gold behind the piece of paper.
false.
His enthusiasm is contagious, also that calculator is fascinating
What does it do if you divide by zero?
it creates the dolorian so the doc can travel.
*explodes*
+G+ is terrible
It jams up every other gear in the world
+G+ is terrible It cannot divide...
+Jared Reabow (Jazza) Yes it can. It was the option between Multiplication and Subtraction.
I love this man so much, he gets so passionate about things that he loves! He might be my favourite person ever
I wish I had had a math teacher like him as a kid.
??
5:06 adorbs. If we have enthusiastic teachers like him in school for every subject, I doubt anyone would fail.
So Dang True!
I couldn't be more disinterested with the topic of this video. But this guy's unbridled enthusiasm for an old mechanical calculator is just so infectious, I can't bring myself to look away.
15 seconds in and I know I'm in for a treat. Cliff is The Man.

Love Cliff, he reminds me of Doc Brown!
Maybe you could get him to do an impression?
Great Scott!
Beautiful piece of engineering genius here
I've learned only one thing from this: ANYTHING Cliff Stoll finds amazing and interesting is bound to bend my mind a bit.
This guy is a character, impossible not to love.
Also, 70 pounds for that? It's a steal.
no, not steel, brass
+Green Tea and Physics lol
+Obi-Wan Kannabis He _is_ a character but I actually don't love him. I don't even like him much. I understand why some people do but he's just a bit _de trop_ for my taste.

Brandon Connell He knows, he was making a funny.
I want to see Matt do a "calculator unboxing" with this beast. Either that, or I want to see somebody whip this thing out in a board meeting and start crunching numbers.
+Jesse Ray you mean "crunching" in a literal sense, yes?
Jesse Ray: I would love to do that during the next briefing which I give. Ha.
This guy is an amazing character. Like an hyper intellectual five year old, amazed by the smallest things.
+Chriib I'm pretty sure he's the doc from back to the future at this point
@@Floirty Doc Brown. Clifford Stoll is Doc Brown.

I love this guy and his enthusiasm

Am I the only one that absolutely loves this guy?
Nope, ure not the only one
Gabriel Mello
My experience tells me that if a question starts with, "Am I the only one that...?" then you're probably not the only one. :p
Definitely no
this guy is high on science, best drug ever
I like his excitement about things.
"A portable calculator smaller than a piano! You can't get cooler than that."
I love Cliff so much
I feel like designing and manufacturing something like this way back when is even more impressive than what we can do with electronics today.
People back then could actually appreciate the technology. Todays people are like: "1nm transistor... k."
It has more digits than my current handheld callculator
why you truly are a math nerd you're even on vi hart. like bro
Kai Widman .From old comes the new

The moment I saw this guy I got excited..... he needs his own channel !!!!
I really want to see this guy in more videos. He's so entertaining. He's like Doc Brown.
Damn that's the most energetic old guy i've ever seen.
You should see him talk about Klein bottles! That's where he really shines
Yeah.
I thought my grandpa was energetic...
It makes me happy how excited this guy is about what he's interested in
I LOVE THIS GUY. He's so infinitely enthusiastic. He could talk about anything and i'd be entertained and educated.
Has Cliff invented the Flux Capacitor yet?
+DarKool81 I was wondering the same...
+DarKool81 he has a large supply of them in his basement :D
+DarKool81 yeah he did it last year (1985)...if you know what I mean.
Obviously, if he's able to conjure up a device from the 19th century
if he ever will then he already has.
Just so you know, Brady, I love videos with Cliff, and think you should do as many as possible.
Absolutely agree
It's Prof Klein Bottle everybody! He's back to show us some more math fun!
This guy is more animated than a cartoon.
His excitement is too damn high! xD
+Touching Things Joking by the way
I absolutely adore this man's enthusiasm for this device
His excitement is terrifyingly contagious. :D

I love this person enthusiasm.
I hope I can find something I'm even half as passionate about as this guy is about that calculator.
And you're not even 1/googolplexth as passionate as this guy is about Klein bottles ;)
Should we tell him there are calculators that fit in your pocket?
+zimri19 Nah.... i guess it would destroy his world.... but i want to see him.... Taking his calculator to the Supermarket and start recalculate his bill.

I wonder how Matt Parker would score this calculator.
Infinity on all counts
+AlanKey86 Probably while lying on a hospital bed.
Display: 7
Function: 3
Accuracy: 5
Ergonomics: -∞
Cred: ∞
Durability: ∞ (it destroyed the asphalt during the drop test)
Leaving a total score of ∞
+AlanKey86 If I had to guess

I love Cliff Stoll! I can't get enough of videos with him in it! The child like enthusiasm about everything is so contagious!
Wow after having watched countless videos with this guy in it, I only just new realised that he's Clifford Stoll. I read an amazing book of his!
Cliff is an impersonation of appreciation of every second of life. And it’s contagious. And beautiful to watch.

Will there be an unboxing of that calculator?
+SoFZlodei24 i hear +EEVblog likes to tear down old calculators!
+SoFZlodei24 Would be very nice^^
My suggestion for the score:
Display: 9 - Actually a lot more digits than on most modern calculators.
Functionality: 4 - Has basic arithmetic but a bit unhandy to use.
Accuracy: 4 - We haven't seen something like (1/9)*9 but I think it would give 0.99...9 at best.
Ergonomics: 10 - It has handles, it only weights 60 or 70 pounds, its smaller than a piano, what do you want more.
Cred: 10 - Like the guy in the video said, you can't get cooler than that.

I love this guy, he's so enthused and crazy! Amazing video.
Crazy. Definitely crazy
This guy has quickly become one of my favorite guests on Numberphile of all time!
Can you do a video on Cliff's flux capacitor?
At about 6:43, my jaw actually dropped, for the first time in years. Engineering, maths, wow.
I love your reactions to this , but I can't even imagine what your reactions to a modern computer would be.

what about divide by zero? you cant show us a calculating machine without asking that question...
I think it would know that the number will stay the same.
it would just spin infinitely
no, a non-zero number divided by zero is +-infinity.
No it isn't.
Eduardo Gomes it isn't, they made a video about that too I thought...
I am loving this video, Cliff is jumping around, then.. I see the Klein bottle behind him, that made my day :D
What would happen if you try to divide by zero on the machine
+MikeLadies nice one
+kordell curl Well, looking at the mechanism, dividing by zero might have the same effect as multiplying by zero. Note that when he's multiplying by zero, the result doesn't reset. At least not that i can see.
