      if you love Cliff Stoll, you should look up ""The KGB, the Computer, and Me" its a NOVA story about him catching a KGB hacker trying to steal military information by setting up a honeypot for him. Cliff Stoll is very enigmatic when you research him, and theres a reason he is so beloved by numberphiles and the USA around. He is a patriot. but above all, just a scientist trying to make the world better. The real superheroes don't wear capes. Except for that one time where Cliff wore a cape and ran around the hallways, thats just.... Cliff for ya.

    My friend and I had the opportunity to hang out with Cliff about a week after this video was filmed and he is one of the most incredible people I have ever met in my life and he is just like he is in these numberphile videos. He was telling us about how he wasn't sure what to show Brady when he came and when he showed him his slide rulers Brady was so excited and was just playing around with them! And the slide rulers, Phoebe the robot, and all of his Klein bottles are so cool to see and play with in real life. So, thank you Cliff and Brady!!

    This is the kind of teaching I like. Presents a concept and then uses easy to understand examples with physical proof instead of just saying "just know its true."
    So multiplication of number can be shown as the the addition of their log10 components.
    10 X 100 = 1000
    log10(10) + log10(100) = log10(1000)
    1 + 2 = 3
    3 = 3
    10^(3) = 10 x 10 x 10 = 1000
    so 10 x 100 does in fact equal 1000. It's so easy to prove it's amazing none of the mathematics courses I took ever mentioned this.

    I love this man with every fiber of my body. I first heard about him in the mid 90s when he would do pieces for thesite on early MSNBC. He'd talk about where the Internet is going. My NSA dad told me that he was huge in the history of Cyber-security, and from there, I read his book, The Cuckoo's Egg. From that book, Cliff got me to choose my major; he pointed the way to my career. If it was not for this man, my lifetime earnings at this point would be reduced by nearly a half-million dollars today. And yet it is so much more than that. He taught me to care about more than things like technology and money. He taught me the importance of caring about people in a bitter pubescent time that I wanted to reject that concept. He showed me you can be a nerd, and still passionately care about your fellow man. I have very few heroes in this world. I am extremely choosy about them, and I don't even particularly recommend them in the first place. Heroes will let you down if you invest too much in them. Cliff is still my hero. Cliff Stoll is a national treasure.

    Interesting thing... A lot of early electronic calculators used decade ring counters, then binary coded decimal, and later on, floating point binary arithmetic, but the early Wang calculators featured an electronic log/anti-log circuit, and actually worked like an electronic slide rule! The LOCI 2 and the 300 series definitely worked in this manner. Wish my 360SE worked...

    A quick thought for y'all. In terms of he accuracy of the slide rule, in that it's more accurate down near zero, less accurate up near 10 - floating point numbers on the computer are similarly accurate in how they work, more fidelity near zero, much less as you go toward +/- infinity.

    There are several formulas to substitute multiplication. You can use a square number table and it is obvious that:
    xy = z^2 - (z-x)^2 with z := (x+y) / 2.
    or a sine and a cosine table
    1/2 (cos(x+y) - cos(x-y)) = sin x sin y.
    but logarithms are the best for it with
    log(xy) = log x + log y
    Even a division can be calculated better:
    log(x/y) = log x - log y.
    Great!

      The second was used to do multiplication with trigonometric tables in the 16th century: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosthaphaeresis
      It was a forerunner to the invention of logarithms. From a modern perspective, it is using complex logarithms.

    • @jpdemer5
      @jpdemer5 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could, but having only one side would be a disadvantage. The back side of a high-end slide rule has a whole bunch of additional scales (for doing high-end math.)
