    I was injured in the Marines as well. I use a wheelchair as well. My wheelchair has the Marine Corps emblem on the back and everyone actually shows me respect when they see that.

    16:00 "I forget that we are in the chair, until someone brings it up"
    This is it right here.
    Sucks but remembering how much I know about it before I was in the situation myself, I have to just take it with a smile. 99/100 times the person doesnt mean to be offensive

    I get told all the time that I am too young to use a wheelchair... like it is a choice..
    Or if I am truly disabled why do I have scuffs on my shoes? Lol maybe because my daughter has the same size feet or they get scuffed transferring or etc..
    Or people who think we just sit around or are lazy...
    It bothers me a lot sometimes that so many think it is okay to just joke around without knowing someone.. you don’t know how long someone has been in their chair..
    I don’t want people to walk on egg shells but they need to think about what they are saying before they start joking around..
    Love you guys!!!

    Thank you so much for sharing. I'm only 6 yrs into my illness dx : Primary Lateral Sclerosis which is a Variant of Lou Gehrig's disease in 2012, which I use a rollator full time and a power wheelchair part time. The staring from strangers is bad enough, yes I was even accused of not being handicapped by a total stranger for parking in handicapped parking .(I no longer drive because of my illness affects my legs and feet.) We're just as capable as any able bodied when it comes to functioning in our daily lives , we just have to do things differently. People view us as being totally helpless because we use a rollator, wheelchair, scooter , forarm crutches etc. So making jokes, cruel remarks or staring at us makes them feel better because they're not living our lives . Sure, I miss wearing my heels, running, jumping and most of all walking unassisted, but you know it is what it is and I (we) can do something about it, and not let it affect our abliities to make our lives better. We know we can be independent it's educating those who feel we're incapable of it.

    My partner and I are both chair users. I'm a bit older than her. She acquired her disability as a baby and I as a teenager but it's been a bit longer for me. We've heard "the racing" comment a million times. I think between us we've had every comment ever directed at a wheelchair user.

    • @MeantToBeLindseyB
      @MeantToBeLindseyB  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We certainly have too. I think in the past week alone we've heard 3 different comments. We got a new variation of "Are you racing?" this week to which I respond flatly "No". The woman responded by saying "Well... you should!"

    Linsey, I'm not sure how much you may remember me, but I know you from Easter Seals Camp and MTSU. Thank you for posting this because I go through the same comments due to my chair. Everyone thinks"slow down, speedy" etc. is so original and I flat out say things like"You must think you're funny. I've heard it my whole life." I have been told"I couldn't live that way" by able-bodied and even other people with disabled people. I enjoy your channel and hope you are doing well.

    My Wife and I are both Wheelchair users as well and everything you experience happens to us almost daily. We've been approached more times than we can count with "Bless Your Heart' for being out an about. Usually at the grocery store just getting food for the week. We try to be understanding and know people don't have bad intentions but it does annoy us often. Like you we're just going about life and aside from having to use a wheelchair our lives are really normal. We're a married couple with a beautiful child and do the everyday things that any couple would do. We bite our tongues and don't respond with the annoyance we truly feel but as you know that's not always easy. It long overdue for this kind of discussion to happen. We are not a pity party. We do not want sympathy. We only want the same respect you would give any couple. Our wheelchairs don't define us. They're just the tools we use to function. Thank you for posting this video. It was like listening to a conversation we have all the time.

    This is what my brothers said about one of my brother's he's gay just don't like coming around the family he's like who cares if you confidence and yourself and you love yourself forget what everybody else say when they give you funny looks giving funny looks back that's how I do and tell them no you don't need to be healed because guess what this is how God loves us and doesn't love us any different than people that walk❤😍 I don't really see that in the black community we were talk better than that even with their kids they will tell them do not pick on people's like that that doesn't make you a good person and that's how I raised my kids

    This is so good to hear, because I was wondering if it was just in my area or just happened to me. Especially the healing thing, or the assumption that I am in pain requiring those "good pain pills" . Heard all of these things. How about doctors offices, and test facilities that don't have equipment, scales etc or require certain times for wheelchair users cause we need help etc,

    • @MeantToBeLindseyB
      @MeantToBeLindseyB  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As for the equipment, you can *sometimes* put in a request/petition or a proposal for certain equipment. It doesn't always work, but it's worth a shot. :)

    Great Video!!! I see where others come from with there belittling comments, has I am at 4 foot 10 inches tall while sitting upright in my chair (which is a TiLite tra). However there comments are blatant discrimination and is a violation of the American's with Disabilities Act. I agree most of the time I shrug my shoulders and keep on going, however every so often I hang a u-turn and they become the center of my attention. Sometimes it is necessary to put the stupid people in their place.
    PS. Can you do a video on some of the modification to have for your home, to help the rest of us out with ideas??

    The ignorance of people is shocking tbh. My sister was in a wheelchair in the last few years of her life and they wouldn't talk to her but the person pushing the chair asking how she was? It annoyed my sister as her attitude was i can answer myself. Thanks for sharing this.

    Don't read the bad comment skip over you know know when you start a comment if if they say it in a certain way it's going to be a bad comment then some people you just have to block them there's some crazy peoples on TH-cam that was say anything

    Thank you so much for this video. I sent it to my mum, she's struggling with things, keeps telling me to "be nice" but she doesn't get it. I'm still so early in coming to terms with things and I'm already tired of the comments.
    I'd love if you could do a thing on how unhelpful staring is that I can also send that to her. I can cope (just about) with kids. But adults, so many people should know better and it just makes my skin crawl.

    • @MeantToBeLindseyB

      simoncelli23 There’s definitely a balance between curiosity for the sake of learning about someone and just being intrusive and expecting someone to give details of something personal when you barely know them. Curiosity is normal but there a line. I’m glad you’re coming to terms with your circumstances. That’s great!😊

    8:12 Says who?
    9:07 I think it's more like you draw the line in different places.
    11:22 How about if someone tells you "you're gonna get a speeding ticket," you ask if *they* would get a speeding ticket if *they* went too fast? How about this one?: I don't feel like I'm going anywhere close to [whatever the speed limit for a car is].
    11:40 I don't think it was meant badly, but I do agree with you that two wrongs don't make a right.
    13:36 This reminds me of a blog post I made about the danger of being divided. I hope you don't me leaving a link to it here: bertvisscher.net/blog/20181116.php
    14:01 That actually gives me hope that future generations will know better.
    20:45 Might your dog feel that you're a little down? :-)
