Participants in the Oklahoma land rush were supposed to wait on the firing of a signal cannon to start. Most waited for the boom of the cannon, the "Boomers", but a significant number did not wait for the signal, the "Sooners". So for OU, you will see both of those words, such as the team's two horse mascots, "Boomer" and "Sooner".
So as you mentioned, the conference has changed. The Big 12 no longer has Texas and Oklahoma (they went to SEC), and they’ve added Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young University (BYU), University of Central Florida (UCF), Cincinnati, and Houston.
When the Oklahoma Territory was opened to settlers, there was an announced time for moving in to happen. Many people jumped the gun so they could claim prime homestead locations though; since they entered the Territory too soon, they (and eventually all residents) became known as "Sooners"
Teams are changing conferences for more tv money. Although all of these conferences are umbrellaed under the NCAA (national college athletic Association) with the same rules, bowl games and championships they are independent entities. They each have their own Commissioners, refferies, TV deals, ect. So the money is different in each. Teams typically play 8-9 conf games and 3-4 other conf games a yr . The hate/pride is so real between conf that you would pull for your conf rival if they were playing a team from a different conf !
Oklahoma and Texas moved to the SEC as of last month. So the two historically best teams are no longer in the Big 12. The PAC 12 dissolved and Colorado (was in Big 12 and returning), Utah,, Arizona and Arizona St. joined. Along with newer teams Cincinnati, BYU, UCF and Houston they now have 16 teams. All this moving around gets a little confusing. It's like toilet paper math.
Oklahoma was originally were native Americans were forcefully resettled to when Europeans were settling the east coast. Eventually people wanted to move to Oklahoma (movie Killers of the Flower Moon is a good reason why). It was announced that Oklahoma would be open for settling and you just needed to “stake your claim” and claim land. They would have a race to whatever land you wanted and the starting signal would be a cannon boom. People who waited for the canon were called Boomers and unfortunately got the short end of the deal - people who either went early or got a good piece of land were accused of being called “Sooners” for going “too soon”. A Sooner was eventually a moniker for someone who had settled Oklahoma and the mascot is similar to a Little House on the Prairie Schooner. Oklahoma ended up being nicknamed the Sooner state and the University adopted that moniker from the state nickname. Baylor’s stadium is only about 40k and one of the smaller stadiums in the conference.
The David Booth Kansas Memorial stadium (everyone calls it memorial stadium) is actually going to be closed this entire football season. It is being rebuilt with a lot of improvements and should reopen in 2025 at the ripe old age of 104. KU's football team is using 2 different stadiums in Kansas City for their home games. They are using Arrowhead which is where the Chiefs play (3 Peat!!!!!) as well as the stadium the Kansas City soccer club Sporting KC plays in.
Nah. Joey ballgame is coming😘 That being said, the Chiefs are a tough out and congrats on your team being so very good and exciting. I really hope that the games are good and that your team does very well.
The name of the conference was given in the 1990s and there WERE 12 teams at that time. The north was Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State - Nebraska (has since moved to the Big 10), Colorado (moved to the Pacific 12, and now is moving back), and Missouri (now in the Southeastern Conference). The South half of the conference was Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M have all left for the southeastern conference. West Virginia and TCU joined when A&M, Missouri, Nebraska, and Colorado left and the conference went from 12 to 8 to 10.
Originally the Conferences had the number of universities mentioned in the name of the conference. When I went to Iowa State the conference was the Big 8 (Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa State, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State). Then it added 4 Texas Universities and became the Big 12. Since then, Universities have come and gone. The conferences just stopped changing the names.
With all the conference realignment, a lot of college football fans have taken to ignoring the big-name games unless it's their team playing, and finding a team in the Group of 5 conferences or even the lower divisions to watch and support. The idea is we hate that the big conferences and media companies are trying to turn CFB into NFL-Lite and ruining what made CFB unique, while the smaller conferences and lower divisions are staying true to traditions. Personally I've taken to rooting for Liberty University, they play in Conference USA and went undefeated in it last year. If they do it again there's a good chance they make the new expanded playoff, and therefore better players will want to come play for them and it'll become a positive feedback loop year after year. Plus, Liberty winning pisses off a particular part of the internet and I find that hilarious, so even more reason to root for them!
This videos are pretty old so they’re not totally accurate, Kansas just had a major renovation this past offseason, the Texas renovation is done, and the Oklahoma renovation is done too, they’re both really really cool
There’s 16 now in the Big 12 as of this year… the PAC 12 essentially dissolved and a lot were taken in. Look forward to a video of most current conference changes!
Texas Tech used to have a big dome behind the south endzone. It was an Indoor Track and Field facility. It’s gone now, (replaced with a much nicer, world-class facility befitting a T&F program that was recently the 2019 Men’s Outdoor and 2024 Men’s Indoor National Champions) but when it was originally built, it was a joint facility for Indoor Track and an indoor football training facility.
Haha, I'm glad you pointed out that the video you are reacting to is outdated. The Big 12 has 16 teams now. OU and Texas are no longer in the Big 12. UCF, Cincinnati, Houston, Colorado, Utah, BYU, Arizona, and Arizona State are all now in the Big 12. The B1G is at 18 teams now, after adding USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington. Yes, Sooners basically means land theives.
The last part of his story about Sooners is correct. It was quite the scandal in the day. I would have to listen again to see if he got all the details. Edit: BTW The Oklahoma & Texas Longhorns go to the SEC this year. So the Big 12 now has not such a Big 8. I would joke that we don't do math well here. But it comes from a time where teams didn't jump to other conferences.
Sooners are land thieves. Never trust a sooner! Their fight song goes like this. It's the only, It's the only, It's the only, It's the only, It's the only, It's the only, It's the only, SONG WE KNOW !!! repeat They play it about 100 times per game.
This video is VERY out of date. Many B12 schools have been added, and many other stadiums have had major renovations. For example, Texas Tech completely has transformed one end of the entire facility. The Red Raiders built an entirely new endzone where the old Double-T scoreboard was. It’s massive, with twin bell towers and a giant sky bridge that connects the stadium with a brand new training facility. All together, it will be the largest contiguous football performance facility in the nation. The endzone project took two years and around $250 million to complete. It will debut at the start of this season. Oh…and they built a new, even larger Double-T scoreboard to go along with it to honor the tradition of the old endzone.
A bit disappointed about Oklahoma State's stadium description. It, too, is sunken and runs east-west as opposed to north-south like nearly every other football stadium. The architectural style used is modified Georgian using a special blend of reddish bricks that match the rest of campus. Gallagher-Iba Arena overlooks the field with areas to watch the football game. Go Cowboys! 🤠
K-State's Stadium has been updated even further with an indoor FB practice facility. Actually we are technically 16 schools now & probably at least 4 more will be added in time. Stadiums are nothing without the fans. & the band fanfare Here's a good example: th-cam.com/video/M7AUQ1QdJ4s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=GAJTlsPNyDsZqzpv In America there is a lot of tailgating, people partying outside cooking all sorts of meats, their favorite brews, versus sitting in their seats prior to the game. BTW the Kansas State Wildcats will be playing the Iowa State Cyclones in Ireland in 2025.
Since this video was made Texas and Oklahoma have left the Big 12 to the SEC and Houston, UCF, Cincinnati, Utah, Arizona st, Arizona and BYU have joined the conference

So for OU, you will see both of those words, such as the team's two horse mascots, "Boomer" and "Sooner".
"Boomer" is a reference to the Land Boom, not the cannon...because it was actually a pistol that signaled the start of the land run.
The Big12 lost their two largest revenue generators, and are replacing it with more podunk outfits.
i saw this vid on my tv and i went over all the way to my computer to make this comment thank you lol
When the Oklahoma Territory was opened to settlers, there was an announced time for moving in to happen. Many people jumped the gun so they could claim prime homestead locations though; since they entered the Territory too soon, they (and eventually all residents) became known as "Sooners"
Little did they know, they were rushing to obtain tornado land...yayyyy

"Toilet paper math" I LOVE it 😂😂

Yeah, what he said about Sooners is true. Also the conference recently expanded to add UCF, Cincinnati, BYU, and Houston.
And Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State

He was correct about the Oklahoma Sooners Lyle.
Your videos remind me of myself...trying to find meaning in this...bizarre fandom...that I love who heartedly

I absolutely LOVE the turth.
I jest.
Have a great day, and thanks for the laugh😘

The domes you’re seeing are most likely their basketball arenas
Or indoor practice facilities

Yes, Sooners basically means land theives.
Texas Tech’s Jones AT&T Stadium is completely different now. Renovations to the south of the stadium are nearly complete.
Texas and Oklahoma have moved to the SEC southeastern conference
Jones AT&T stadium had been renovated since this video
If you like college football, I recommend checking out some college basketball as well. Both sports are equally popular
The word "big" has the word "big" and the number "10" in it.
SEC is college football 🇺🇸
Need a redo of this video if you can find one. The XII is different now, thus the rankings would be as well.
Sooners have moved to the SEC

You should react to the Marching Ravens, the oldest NFL marching band still in operation
The big 12 now has 16 teams soon to be 24
Sooners are land thieves. Never trust a sooner! Their fight song goes like this.
It's the only,

There are now 16 teams in the B12. This video you are using is old.
Hi Lyle
Big 12 = Little League
‘YAWN’
Says you! Big 12 is still just as strong now as was then!
