    As a 10 year old boy I got one of these with the leather holster from my Grandma. Many of my friends had regular, small, mostly plastic cap guns and I remember them being blown away when they first saw this beauty. Its size and heft was unlike any other cap gun - period!. I must admit I felt really cool wearing that gun and holster around - even if the tip of the barrel was down near my ankle! Thanks for the memories for a 70 year old kid.

    I still have mine and I am 75 yro. It was my all time favorite cap gun and I still have 3 cartridges. I also have my cousin's Colt 45 which her husband was kind enough to give me after she died. We lived across the street from each other and she was my best friend. She was a Tom-boy so we played together almost everyday. Both of our guns have chips in the plastic handles from when we dropped them from being "shot" in our many gunfights. I became a muzzle loading gun enthusiast in 1979 and have been collecting and shooting them with black powder ever since. I own several Italian reproduction revolvers of the 1860 Colt Army. I also own other reproduction "Open Top" Colt conversions to .45 Colt cartridge. The Hubley 45 Colt was closely copied from the original black powder Colts in size and detail. I bought an 1860 reproduction that has white grips and white metal as a collector/display piece because the Hubley resembles it so closely. The Italian reproductions are fully funtional revolvers that fire Civil War Era round lead balls or pointed bullets, or in the case of the "Open Tops", the 45 Long Colt centerfire cartridge. One of the reasons few Hubley cartridges are still around is if the brass was hit with the gun's hammer as often as mine were the back of the case began to fracture because of so much use. Even when reloading modern brass cartridge cases, they will eventually crack and split becoming unusable. I have often wondered it the Hubley brass was made on equipment that had been used to make archaic 44 rimfire cartridges in the past? Thank you so much for this video.

    Enjoy your gun collection. My Dad had a gun collection from when he was a kid. He was an only child and so his collection survived way past his early years. My Dad got the 4 of us kids many really neat guns during our kid years of the 50's and early 60's. All our guns were lost to overly dramatic gunfights and shootouts. Your videos are really interesting and bring back a lot of memories. Thanks!

    Love these old toy guns...I grew up in the 50s & 60s...the 'Golden Age' of toy guns...had the Mattel Fanner 50 with the Winchester '92 that had the loading gate and loaded/ejected the 'ammo'...watch the Western on TV the night before...then go out and play them in the back yard...when kids actually went outside and played!!!

    I notice the loading gate also likes to gouge the frame. I have shooting and display models of most of my cap guns. I fully disassemble my Hubley 45 "shooter" example, to thoroughly clean, oil, deburr and hand fit the parts. I sanded it down to bare metal, as the finish was already rough I also ground out the barrel and front frame assembly to reduce weight, replacing the rivets with machine screws. I also switched to cast aluminum bullets to save more weight. The gun runs *so much better now! I've also fixed the loading lever issue by peening a short brass pin crosswise through the end of the lever, this keeps it firmly in place, while still allowing it to be lowered. It's too bad Hubley didn't use a spring-loaded ball bearing catch, eventually I would like to add one.

    There was a much scarcer model made with a very soft satin finish without the bright chrome. It is markrd MODEL 1860. the cylinder was gold but as time wore on the satin finish wore off and the gun turned a soft gray color. These are difficult to locate, but if you find one you are fortunate to own a Hubley Original Colt 45. What a great demonstation Rodger of an outstanding cap gun!!!!!!!!

      I have one I purchased off eBay. Came with a wooden kit to make a stand for it. Still complete, unfinished in the box. Also have one like in the video to compare it to. Have two Nichols Stallion 45s I’ve had since a kid (I’m 70). One box still has a bit of Xmas wrap and a hand written price of $3.50 I believe. We we didn’t have a lot of money and they survived because I was warned repeatedly to take care of them. Thanks for the videos!

    Thank you for a wonderful nostalgic video. I have one of these from my youth that is only in fair condition. It was my favorite toy gun for gunfights at the neighborhood OK Corral. It so closely resembles the real 1860 percussion Civil War Colt converted to .45 cartridge, it is amazing. I now own modern firing reproductions of 1860 Army and 1872 Open Tops made in Italy, which are top quality and accurate shooters. I would like to own a Hubley in mint condition, but they cost as much as a new black powder import.

    I got one for Xmas 1960 came with holster and pistol belt. Only problem I fired it so much the back of cylinder that housed the bullets crack. After that the Bullitt would not fit. I loved that gun.

  • @JeffLeites
    @JeffLeites 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had one when I was a kid. The version I had came with a holster. There was also a version with two guns and a two gun holster. And of course the version with just the pistol. I'm pretty sure the one I had was in the $5 price range back then. I remember that I was disappointed that the bullets in the holster where just for show and did not have the functionality of the 6 that would accept caps. It also did have the problem of the cylinder resting a bit to far forward for the little gizmo that would push a pin on the back of the cylinder when the trigger was pulled to reach the pin and make the cylinder turn reliably.

    I had one of these (given to me by my Uncle Tom ca 1957 or so) until just a few years ago (prolly after my stroke in '02) still in the original box (although with out the plastic cover). The only reason they survived as long as they did (I had mt late brother's also) was that mom and dad took them away 'before we broke 'em' - they stayed in storage with my folks for YEARS until I got them after dad passed away...My brother, Ray, had the 'Nichols' revolver - it (IIRC) pre-dated the Mattel Fanner 50 (of which I had two)...

    Since i was a little kid i loved capguns...can stil remember the first one i had i didn't have the strength yet to pull the trigger hahaha. Untill today few minutes ago i never even knew real sized cap guns existed. I was born in 83 so i only know the small capguns but back then when i was small the guns seemed bigger and i have few cap guns but crazy how small they are and i always wondered since i was a grownup if there were real sized cap guns and im so glad i just found out they exist. My favourite wild west revolvers are the Colt Army 1860 fluted Cylinder and Remington 1858. I would love to have one of them but firearms laws here in the Netherlands are like this ...antique revolvers like those colt and remington is ok to purchase without a permit but the cheapest costs about 2,500 euro's which i wish i had. Replica's of those revolvers are much cheaper but can only be purchased with a permit because they aren't antique..i'm pretty sure not even real sized toy cap guns like on the vid are allowed without a permit here because they look like real ones....damn laws.

    The most fabulous of all toy guns sold in The Golden Age (1955-1965). To this day I remember arguing with Dad when he ( and my best friend..) told me I was "too old" to ask for the two-gun set I so wanted. I had to get along with my Mattel Fanner .50 Stagecoach Set, which was fine but not what I wanted. I once got a chance to"fast-draw" a Hubley and I couldn't get the damn thing to clear the holster, damn it. Still wanted it, though. Actually, I still do. Does anyone know why some smart person hasn't reproduced these wonder weapons for today's adult collector, i'e' those kids that didn't get theirs for Christmas?

      A) the barrel configuration is of the ARMY version. The navy didn't have that deep a loading notch.
      B) the barrel on this is about 7-8 inches long. A "sheriff's" model had a 5 inch barrel. Quicker on the draw, y''know
      C) the Colt "police" model, of 1858, had a smaller frame and was .36 caliber

    Best place to get a Hubley colt 45 is on ebay. do a search for the gun of the same name, Hubley Colt 45. a few always pop up and in various states of condition. Real nice ones can gor 150.00 to 200.00 o rmore. You can get a descent "used one" for less. Remmeber whta i said about the guns, make sure the cylinder revovles with every trigger pull or it is broke. good luck.

  • @MrBirdyPlays
    @MrBirdyPlays 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It isn't good to fire to quick or too slow or it does not hit the paper to make a spark.... But it's good to go with a perfect paice

    I can't help but think that it's too bad that kids can't play with things like these anymore without the risk of getting shot by the police/having the cops called on them.

      funny, I was cleaning my cap guns outside and you know if a cop came by, he would think they are real from a distance. Yup too bad, love these toy guns.

      @caribman10 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No,that's still the police. We, black and white, played with these guns day in and day out and NOBODY got shot. NOBODY. "Gangs" never used Colt Army revolvers, and anyone in blue who "mistakes"one of these for a real gun shouldn't be in the uniform.

      Bought this model on Ebay, search for vintage cap guns or Hubley colt. Beware, Ebay is cancelling auctions that do not strictly comply with their rules reguarding these toys and even if they do, they still might cancel it. Good luck and thanks for the view.

      purchased this Hubley on ebay for about 100.00. They are usually on ebay for sale. but be careful. It will cost a bit more for a fully functioning one, meaning that the cylinder turns with every trigger pull. Makes sure the description says that.
