About twelve years ago, maybe thirteen, Chris Nolan phoned me and asked me if I wanted to do a Batman movie. Of course I wanted to do a Batman movie, and more than that I wanted to work with Chris Nolan. But I had a problem, I didn't know how to be Batman and split my personality and become the suave and elegant Bruce Wayne. So Chris suggested that I call my friend James Newton Howard, who's one of the most brilliant, elegant and wonderful composers. And off we went to London with our friend Mel Wesson. The four of us together came up with Batman Begins, we never thought about a sequel or anything like this. A few years went by and one day Chris turned up at my studio, and he started telling me the story of the Joker. And he told me a story of anarchy, he told me a story of a punk attitude to music and to acting. And I said to him, "Who's going to be the actor in this, who's going to play this Joker?" And he said to me, "Heath Ledger." And Heath gave this incredible performance, totally fearless, totally on the edge, totally out there. Every day, when we saw it daily, we were just like, "Amazing." Just before he finished the movie, we found out that our Heath had died. And I thought I should tone the music down, I thought it was all too much and I suddenly realised that the only way to really show respect to this performance, to give respect to the man, was to keep the edges in it. Gordon: Harvey Dent never made it home. Joker: Of course not. Gordon: What have you done with him? Joker: Me? I was right here. Who did you leave him with hm? Your people? Does it make you feel responsible for Harvey Dent's current pre-dic-a-ment. What's the time? Gordon: What difference does that make? And Ledger told Nolan to hit him as hard as he could, that fucking lunatic I love him, he could have made it. Rest in peace Heath Ledger died before his time
This is the stuff good movies are made of. Hans Zimmerman and James Howard really nailed what they were trying to do: build tension. The beginning of the song just makes you feel uneasy, like the Joker is suppose to do. It makes you feel like something is about to happen, which does come eventually. Truly art, in all senses of the word.
This piece (among many others) was performed during the "Hans Zimmer Live In Prague [2017]" concert - it's worth not only hearing, but also watching. And he tells an interesting story (about soundtracks to Batman movies) during that concert - see my comment in reply to LogBucket's comment/thread here (few comments above or below) for more details.
And "Black Hawk Down" is awesome too. BTW: This piece here (among many others) was performed during the _"Hans Zimmer Live In Prague [2017]"_ concert - it's worth not only hearing, but also watching in its entirety. And the "Interstellar" movie... Well, that guy with the guitar in "Stay" piece is Guthrie Govan and he truly does an excellent job in that (live) piece "Hans Zimmer - Interstellar Stay (Live in Prague 2017)" (somewhere here on YT) - it's even better than OST in my opinion.
This is part of why the movie is great to me and not just good. It’s clear that the score increases the intensity, maturity, and realism of the many events that take place in the story. Well done 👌
I listened to this while playing the RDR 2 mission where you hang Colm O'Driscoll. I guess you could say we took his little plan and we turned it on itself. It was pretty cool because the music synced up amazingly.
The soundtrack is ok. Effective but extremely simple with a bit of a drowning effect. The outlining of triads through a specific pattern gets annoying and boring. But when put to the film it works.
The piano near the end kinda resembles a twisted ice cream truck song, so haunting. one thing i noticed in the movie was that if you pay close enough attention that specific part (creepy piano) always plays whenever he's trying to corrupt someone's morals.. The joker once was a victim aswell. This take on the joker truly showed how disturbing and real this character is. I feel bad for him because he most probably was a nice person before something gave him a little "push". Probably something to do with the mafia because that's why he enjoys ripping them off and murdering them so much during the movie. Also that one part where he says "you complete me", during the intorragation scene refers to the surge in justice that Batman brang to Gotham city and how he's amazed by how someone actually stands up to corruption instead of giving in and living in despair like he does. He's just a really depressed guy really. He kind of likes Batman but understands that his views on justice are different and that he believes anyone has the power to change and that he is dead against killing anyone. "when an unstoppable Force meets and imovable object". Joker however believes that one less mobster is one less vermin in the world And that anyone can be corrupted in some way and that everybody is ugly and evil if they're pushed. He just won't change his morals just like Batman which is why they are "destined to do this forever."
Wow, I actually never knew TDK didn't get best movie of the year in 2008 in the Academy, when it is by far the best movie of its decade. TDKR didn't even get a single nomination in the Academy, which is a double disgrace to the movie industry
By far? The opinion that the Dark Knight is the best movie of its decade is completely fair but it is not the best BY FAR. Loads of other masterpieces came out during that decade: There Will Be Blood, Zodiac, Children Of Men, Requiem For A Dream, The Departed, arguably Jarhead, The Royal Tenenbaums, Punch Drunk Love, arguably The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, The Prestige, Inglorious Basterds, I could go on and on. Because of that, there is no way its one of those “By Far” situations. There’s just too many contenders that are just as good if not better than The Dark Knight for that to be the case.
This is the sum of all the movie-the nail biting escalation that is present every single second of the film. This is what makes the film great. And this song best explains that! Shame to the Academy for not including "The Dark Knight" as a nominee in the best picture race, shame on them!
