I bought and have tested this contraption. It works well for me here in Houston, and will speed up load development considerably. One improvement I made was to cut the base of a case off above the wall taper and push it into the hose. This increased airflow down the barrel and keeps the hose from falling out. Thanks for this one, DD.
This is awesome dog. I live in NC so I shoot in the heat a lot. To make something for 1/3 the price that does a better job is the best. Thank you so much. Stay safe and live free
I switch a few years back to air mattress / inflatable blower, also have silicone hose on but a thin walled brass tube approx 3 inches long at the chamber end does not restrict the flow and makes it easy to fit in the chambers from 223 to the magnums. Most hobby shops stock brass tubing of various sizes that will fit snug inside the hose. I like the usb battery pack more than my 12V setup. Greeting from South Africa😊
Sweet little rig! Been griping about waiting on barrels to cool forever now. This got me off my butt to get one made. Thanks DD for another helpful video.
I’ve seen a similar set up, but with a longer tube, and they put the blower in a small lunch bag with freezer blocks in it, so it was pulling in cold air.
Would have never thought of using an acrylic hobby paint dryer for this application. I'm all the way up in Canada. It's almost impossible to find the magneto speed or its predecessor, the riflekuhl. Especially for a decent price. And battery life was always a concern. I've literally used air mattress pumps in the past when doing load dev and testing during summer months and hated it just out of respect for others on the local range and the size of the unit. Thanks for this tip. I literally ordered one right after seeing this. Under $20 CA to boot.
Nice! I’m definitely going to make a copy of this! Thanks to Ross and the mystery shooter for this idea! That’s just about the perfect all purpose deer rifle there Desert Dog!
When I was 15 I was training shooting moving targets at the range. We had an old husqvarna in 6.5x55 with a heavy stanless barrel. After a serie of 4 we put the barrel in a barrel of water ha ha. Greetings from Sweden.
I've been needing something like this for a while! I live in South Louisiana and it gets hot here too! Thanks DOG! 6/27/24 Got my blower and battery in and waiting on the hose!
I use a battery operated pump for a air mattress and works great with the hose set up. I measured the temp of the barrel with a laser thermometer and it cooled it down in just a few minutes. Down side is the D batteries. But so far it’s lasted several trips to the range.
I’ve been wanting to get a barrel cooler. Because how hot it is during the summer months I normally wait to do my development after hunting season or a right before hunting season when the weather is cooler.
I’ve done this same setup but with a portable mini air mattress inflator as the blower. I like this USB blower better I think. A tip is if your range requires a chamber flag between sessions you can put yellow tape around the length of the tube. They are satisfied with this at my range and they are sticklers about using chamber flags.
I normally take two rifles and a handgun to the range on warm days and just rotate them. I have been searching for a unit like this . Thanx . I will order the necessary parts. I found barrel coolers too expensive for my liking. $90.00 in good ole Canada.
Great idea,I will be rigging one up asap.Maybe only inserting the hose to the start of the chamber instead of right up to the bore would also bring down the chamber temp better to avoid cooking the round?
Interesting info. Thought provoking and I'm sure more ideas will surface. Before these new fangled dude tinhorn gadgets , I worked with 4 interchangeable barrels. Think about it, Harder to burn out a barrel and never need to break in ,Ect. Ect. To each there own. Another GREAT SHOW, THANKS
If you have power tools some companies offer usb adapters for the batteries as well. I use one with a 4 amp hour ryobi battery and if it dies in a year I warranty it
Things have come a very long way. In the late 1800's the buffalo hunters shot with multiple guns and when one got too hot they would just"throw it into a snow bank" to cool it off. This came from an old book I have on buffalo hunting...
The true test of its value as opposed to the other will be how long does it last. It is much louder, but folks should be wearing ear protection on the firing line anyway. Both could work while the firearm is "racked" during ceasefire times, but your setup would be less likely to drop out while racked. I could REALLY see the benefit of a cooler during a prairie dog shoot as well. One could also make a manifold that could cool 2 guns about as fast as the Riflekuhl would cool one, since you had a whole meter of tubing.😊
I've seen some different techniques.. but this is definitely one of the cheapest options! Just wondering how long those mini blowers last 😮 Thanks for sharing this brother
I,add water, salt... And ignore that long hose that will cool the wrong part of the barrel Missing those minutes to smoke a cigarette, ponder on other aspects of my bad shooting. Or annoying the guys around...
A little modification would make the blower send more air down the barrel. Remove the black tapered tube, measure the outside diameter of the exhaust tube and buy that diameter hose as that will be the inside diameter. Cut the hose so you can stand the rifle on its recoil pad and the blower can sit on a table next to the rifle. Now you will move more air than with the tapered nozzle would give you, just make sure to keep hose length to a minimum. This will remove as much friction as possible from the system….. remember hot air will rise so muzzle up will cool the barrel a little faster …
What if you got one of those lunch box size ice chests and put some ice in it and set the blower in it? Of course you would have put it in such a way that the melting ice didn't get the blower wet. Also maybe a little longer tube.
After a couple shots with a sporter profile hunting barrel, you will experience POI shift. I cool the barrel back down very close to ambient temperature when zeroing or shooting groups for accuracy nodes during load development. The only accuracy that matters with a hunting rifle is a cold-bore shot. It takes about 3-4 minutes between shots with this barrel cooler to bring the barrel back close to ambient temperature. For target or competition rifles, you shoot "sighters" or "foulers" and shoot groups with a warm barrel, but you can't let it get too hot or the POI will shift again.

I also used this "blower" when starting a fire in my fireplace to move more air. It works great getting a good fire going. Better bellows or blowing.
What a great idea. Seems like it would be extra useful when it's hot outside.

It doubles as a swamp ass cooler too!
Thank you sir! Everything will be here in a few days.
Just wanted to circle back and say thanks again. I made it and it works great.
I am engineer and I just have to say your explanation of forced convection was total... just kidding. Great vid. Im making one of these
You almost had me, lol.
You are correct anker is one of the best brand names out.

Everything is very precise and detailed. With cool conclusions.
Ordered all the suggested bits. Looking forward to giving it a try!
Thanks . I ordered all parts for this unit and they have arrived. Can’t wait for a field test. Thanks for the great tip!!
Sweet little rig! Been griping about waiting on barrels to cool forever now. This got me off my butt to get one made. Thanks DD for another helpful video.
That is awesome, I got the parts from Amazon today, assembled it and it indeed gets over 4 m/s (7 miles per hour for the non-metric 🙂)
Thank you! Great idea and video. Thanks also to Ross for sharing it with you.
Yep, Ross deserves the credit for this one (and the mystery target shooter that showed him)
I’ve seen a similar set up, but with a longer tube, and they put the blower in a small lunch bag with freezer blocks in it, so it was pulling in cold air.
Many thanks to the author of the channel for very good advice!
Thanks DD,Just got mine in the mail. Ordered after watching your video Thanks for all the great info you share 👍
Alabama summer shooting, with temps in the 90's. I'm sold. Seems better than a wet rag.
That’s really cool 😎
For the price and air flow through the barrel that seems spot on.

Thanks DD, I agree with you. Twice the cooling speed at one third the cost is no question a better value ! Backwoods boot dryer? Good hunting to you.

Thanks for sharing. Already got power banks. Now I have another use for those power banks. Great video!
I just bought one on Amazon. Already have the BP. THANKS!
I've been needing something like this for a while! I live in South Louisiana and it gets hot here too! Thanks DOG! 6/27/24 Got my blower and battery in and waiting on the hose!
Thanks!! Got the set coming!!

Ive been doing the same thing with a battery powered air mattress pump for a few years now. Cools the barrel down fairly quick
Thanks! Ordering one now
Thanks for sharing the barrel cooler info.
Fantastic Video! Thanks for the efforts!
Awesome!!! Thanks for sharing this rig, I needed this for the horrid Texas summers.
I’ve been wanting to get a barrel cooler. Because how hot it is during the summer months I normally wait to do my development after hunting season or a right before hunting season when the weather is cooler.
Excellent video. How long would you suggest using this between shots?
I let the barrel/chamber cool close to ambient temp. I never collect load data or zero a hunting rifle with a warm barrel.
Thanks for the video, I ordered this set right away

I use a milwaukee blower the small one with silicone hose. Aso handy to clean off the bench
🥳 Great Tip! Thank You! 👍

I ordered this stuff to try out. I've also been meaning to grab an old air matress pump and rig up a cooler but havent
I use a portable electric air blower, a battery and a piece of garden hose. Works like a charm
I,add water, salt...
And ignore that long hose that will cool the wrong part of the barrel
Missing those minutes to smoke a cigarette, ponder on other aspects of my bad shooting. Or annoying the guys around...
@@pepepepito623 okayy..?

A battery powered air mattress inflator with a piece of hose attached to it would work perfect.
I use an air pump that is used for inflating an air mattress

Way overcomplicated. Hook up the blower in this video for 2-3 minutes between shots and you'll be good.
It seemed a little quieter as well.
It actually might be quieter. I should have used my dB meter.
@@desertdogoutdoors1113- that wouldn’t be a bad idea as a short follow up video. Thanks DD!
Sounds like you need a co2 tank or a scuba tank, cool the barrel down in a matter of seconds 😅
Or a bucket of water and an aquarium pump. Run the pump for a few seconds, run a dry patch through the bore and you're ready for the next series.
Do you park you truck next to the bench to plug it in. Then leave the truck run because the usb port wont have power with the truck turned off.
WTF??????
What are the real world results. How much did it cool the barrel in a 5 minute span ?
After a couple shots with a sporter profile hunting barrel, you will experience POI shift. I cool the barrel back down very close to ambient temperature when zeroing or shooting groups for accuracy nodes during load development. The only accuracy that matters with a hunting rifle is a cold-bore shot. It takes about 3-4 minutes between shots with this barrel cooler to bring the barrel back close to ambient temperature. It would make more sense to read temperature instead of airflow
Why on earth don't Magnetospeed make a USB powered cooler?
Now we just need something with a 3D printer to come up with a better adapter.
Great video!👍Would you be open to discussing a collaboration? Feel free to let me know if you're interested.😁
Like your videos can't stand that damn music!!
Good video.
