I live in Milwaukee near Lake Michigan and this happens all the time. Nearly every year I hear about people (usually people ice fishing) who have to be rescued when they suddenly find themselves drifting away from shore.
Shows how that man who didn't realize he had walked out onto one of the great lakes could have been in serious trouble. He was a student from another country who went out for a walk. Fortunately someone saw him and sent rescue out for him.
@@pettybetty2699 Perhaps if you lived there. They said the snow on the beach blended right onto the lake so he didn't see the transition. Go look for the news article. Oh, and I don't think it was lake Michigan, can't remember.
This is a gorgeous timelapse video! Great Lakes ice is always dangerous, even in the coldest of winters. The Great Lakes truly function much more like an ocean than a lake.
This reminds me of winter 94-95, in Chicago. The lake was almost completely frozen over. To put that in perspective, Lake Michigan is roughly the size of the Florida peninsula. The Coast Guard had ice cutters out to rescue stranded vessels. It's the coldest I have ever been in my life! 🥶 Then came summer 95, in Chicago. Just about the hottest I've ever been in my life. I've spent hottest seasons in Panama, Kuwait, and Texas. 🥵
My family used to go on hikes right to the edge of the ice growing up in Chicago. Sometimes massive waves would hit the ice wall splashing freezing water on to us. I realize now why we were the only family out there.
As a former Chicago lifeguard, yeah, that was insanely foolish. Pulling floaters out of the water in the summer is bad enough as it is. It’s even worse in the winter. Probably the only part of the job I don’t miss.
This is cool. I lived in IL. for 2 years and used to go to Lake Michigan in the winter trying to find places to fish. It was wild seeing the frozen lake.
@@EggwonMusk I was a bit wary of the possibility of breaking through the ice as I am a big guy so I looked for holes that other fishermen made in areas that I knew the ice was thicker.
