A quick and sloppy cell phone video of my thoughts and ramblings on the wide G3 handguard. let me know what else you'd like to see with the PTR-91. Thanks for watching.
Wide handguard is unwieldly compared to the slim. The bipod will throw off accuracy. Best accessories for the G3 is the XS ghost ring sights kit, a heavy buffer, and a decent compensator. I have a Spuhr stock on one of mine and the collapsible M4 stock and adapter on another 2. I have a collapsible brace on my G3k clone. I have the UTG forends on 2 G3's and Midwest on the other. One thing many people aren't aware of is that it's best to store your rifle muzzle down if you oil yours heavily as I do. The recoil buffer in the stock is a friction device for mitigating recoil and if oil seeps in, it loses much of its effectiveness. The G3 is the only rifle that will still function without an extractor. The chamber flutes allow the hot gasses from the fired round to be pushed rearward with the bolt into the spent brass base contacts the ejector and it kicked out the ejection port. The G3 also has a free floating barrel in normal configuration, which allows for great accuracy. The design is absolute genius. One of my favorites.
I don’t own a PTR-91, but if I did, I’d want the wide hand guard. To me, it looks natural, and I hate the anorexic look of the H&K slimline hand guards. And before someone says, “thin hand guards make it easier to C-grip” - it’s a .308 battle rifle, not some 5.56 race rifle. Just because you’ve seen Garand Thumb shooting it that way doesn’t mean you can - or should.
I am with you, the rifle just looks more proportional and classic. My PTR-32 looks especially “wrong” with the slim handguard and long AK mag, so happy with the wide one.
In the mid 70s I bought a genuine German -made HK 91 long before the import ban.I managed to acquire virtually every accessory for this first gun as well as a second one that I had stumbled onto in a local pawnshop. The HK 91 came with the wide hand guard at the time but I later acquired the slim line forearm that came with an aluminum heat shield. I managed to keep the first 91 which I still have. I re installed the wide forearm since it is the only one of the two hand guards that will accommodate a bi pod , which I also own. The PTR came about largely because of the Bush import ban and the fact that it was strictly a political move pertaining to imported semi auto military styled rifles. The PTR has an advantage over the HK 91 with regard to the welded on picatanny rail on the top of the rifle which precludes the need for an expensive claw mount scope mount. I managed to acquire a genuine HK extended butt plate which dampens the recoil and adds about 1 1/2 inches to the rear stock. Through a vendor I managed to pick up an extended number of surplus G3 magazines which was an outstanding deal. German engineering made the 91 a good, albeit a heavy rifle.
They are saying the PTR is more accurate than the old HK's. You should sell off the HK, get a PRT and pocket the extra cash. I did this with a Chinese AK that became a collector item.
@@litare4328 Prove it. I have owned 7 different G3 or MP5 clones from PTR. Every one has run flawlessly. As good as my HK. You have no idea what you are talking about. Now go sit at the kiddies table while the adults talk.
I went from the slim, to the wide to the mlok carbine rail for $70 and its discapates the heat better than both. But I do understand that some like the look of the slim and wide.
The wide handguard G3 got me many, many attack helis in CoD 4, and the slim didn't. Was a simple decision for me for $125 based on that alone. Add that AC Unity has started making their own brand new versions of it and you basically have no reason not to get one, even if it is subjectively incredibly ugly for as much as it costs. Jokes and 7 kill streaks aside, The HK bipod is pretty good for stability and readily available (if a bit expensive), but it does add a lot of girth to the grip and weight to the front of the gun, so unless you have massive gorilla hands and/or solely shoot from a bench, skip the bipod or just keep it in your pocket, it takes 2 seconds to clip it in if you want it. Just note if you find an HK33/HK93 clone with a similar wide forend, the bipod is completely interchangeable and will work on it as well.
The wide handguard - especially when it's ventilated is GOOOOD. I did the work myself as the real slotted thing is unavailable to the extreme. The bi-pod is also very useful, so change it asap.
@@TheTyler701 - Sorry for the delay answering you - my bad. I measured by look the slots and their pitches - using a 1/4" endcutter I used my adjustable vice on my drill press and removed the plastic and aluminum underneath. It was a slow process. Is there any way I can send a few pics of mine? I bought the C91 handguard but I did the work on my C93 myself.
Putting three 20rd mags through my PTR91 with slimline green forearm made it too hot to hold with bare hand. That was rapid fire but about a round every 5 seconds. Prices on wide forearms have almost tripled in the two years since you posted this. The ACUnity version has fitment issues,
I got mine when they were not that bad priced. Also got a HK93 trigger housing. Also got the bi pod for it. I Have a carry handle but it won't work with a scope so it's a no go.
Wide hand guard looks better, and has bracket for bi-pod. Clip on the side is for if you have the 3 point sling. My PTR had that crummy black plastic hand guard, and I didn't like it. I think PTR should have gone the extra mile and made or contracted to make the wide hand guard to save us end users the hassle of having to "complete" the look and utility of an otherwise outstanding rifle. Good Video!
I enjoy the wide handguards for the look and their ability to use both Versa pod mounts and the HK style of bipods. There used to be Turkish/pof bipods readily available but they are now double the price. Fairly flimsy too. If so had to do it over starting off NOW 2023, I’d honestly go the wide handguard from AC unity and I’d get a Versa pod adapter that fits on the handguard.
That sounds like the best option in today's market. I wasn't even aware that AC unity made G3 handguards. I would love it if Magpul did! A zhukov like G3 handguard would be perfect!
The original CETME Modelo 1 (The grandpa to the g3) didn't even have handguards, just a steel bipod that folded up and doubled as a "handguard." Back then they just figured men should suck it up and get burnt. I have the narrow wooden handguards from the early '60's and I've never had any issues with the heat, I can see why the guards got bigger though.
Yeah lol, after putting 2 mags through mine, I couldn't touch it without insulated handguards! Even the Rhodesians had to put some wood padding on their original handguards! Thanks for watching
Thought about taking a slim handguard and dremeling out some of those little slots to add some heat dissipation. Not sure if it’s worth the effort but since the surplus slims are so cheap I figure I’ll give it a shot.
Punch in ptr 91 tri rail on Google / I just got one works great / tri picatinny rail with stubby grip and bipod in same package , runs about 80 / 90 bucks
Robertrtg has them in black for like $80 as of 4/23/22..brand is AC-Unity. RKSUSA might have them, but wouldn't recommend them...I've been waiting for almost 8 months to have it delivered ...
I bought a "new" CETME C308 for 7 Benjamin's which has the same PTR "Navy" polymer lower and kept the furniture. Scratches my G3/1960's African mercenary/Cold War itch for me. Some guys try to turn theirs into an HK, not me. The Spanish CETME is the original OG. Old school is more cool! :D

Why did you change out that butt plate. I got a ptr32 recently and the butt plate is not set flush with the stock. I’ll probably change out the whole stock. Those slim hand guards are terrible. Agree. Looking for some surplus wood furniture. Crazy expensive I know but looks cool. Best. H
i got wood grip and stock , forend on mine . they are the way to go for heat and looks . but good luck finding a nice set cheap ! cetme wood will work but they are getting hard to find in anything but bad shape now . the little 'clip' on the stock is for a sling . if you think it gets hot now try one in full auto ! lol . got to shoot a real g3 in the army back in the early 80's . wasn't as bad to control as some say it is . far better then the m14 is ! but that damn collapsible stock got my shoulder bigtime ! found out why it's called the ' meat grinder ' ! lol
I can imagine the A3 stock would be brutal in full auto! I've never shot an A3 stock on a G3 but I have on an MP5 and it didn't hurt my shoulder but I did have to grind my cheek down into the metal arm to see the sights!
Just picked up the AC-Unity wide handguard from rtg. Only in stock in black, but I rattle canned it. Taking it shooting soon, interested to see how it handles the heat over the slim one.

I wonder if the longer handguard interferes with shell ejection (per ejects the spent shells forward). It seems pretty close to the ejection port. That would be a serious consideration.

Idk which one is best out of the different models of .308?
If I had to do it all over again I'd probably go with the G.I. R. It has the steel lower, classic parkerized finish and a rail too. Or just the GI model. I think either way, you'll love whatever you get. Definitely recommend getting an HK sight tool, they're cheap and a must have for elevation adjustments on the sights.
