A PC Builders Nightmare? (Fixing Bent CPU Pins)

  • It's not a very nice feeling if you happen to discover your processor has a few bent pins, stopping it from working, or even fitting in the motherboard. Luckily it doesn't mean you have to throw it away or buy a replacement because with the help of a few household objects, you may just be able to rescue it.
    Today we're fixing up and old AMD Athlon CPU that's fallen victim to some mishandling.
    Thanks for watching :)

    My brother bought an FX-9590 from cex last year, the chip worked but it would only let his pc utilise 3.25gb of ram with 8gb installed which was baffling at the time but after a quick google search it was clear the issue had to be a bent pin, we removed the cpu from its socket and sure enough there it was, we fixed the pin using an old blade to ease it back into place, it wasnt tough but it was scary doing it for the first time, you just have be gentle.

    I once bought a used FX6350 that arrived with a couple of bent pins. It probably happened during shipping, as it was not packaged very good. But It was easy enough to bend the pins back. Used that CPU for a few years before I got my ryzen 1700 system last year.

    if you do happen to rip a pin off do not worry! just continue to straighten the pins and when it comes to socketing the cpu drop the yanked off pin into the correct pin hole, should be enough pressure from the rest of the cpu pins to make a solid connection !

  • @Mini-z1994
    @Mini-z1994 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Had my fair share of needing too do this myself as well, my cousin when he bought a new motherboard ripped the cpu up with the cpu cooler, & when he tried installing it he bent pins as he didn't dare take off the processor from the cooler (a phenom II x4 965 3.4 ghz)
    The first thing i did was stand over his bed with an old bunch of random advertising papers & fliers that was about too be burnt up, & pinged the processor off into the bed on the fliers with a tap from the screwdriver, unbent the pins for about 40 minutes & then put it together.
    (Old one failed randomly one day for him, was a cheap am3 motherboard that took 125w cpu's at best so not surprising really.)
    Also got a pc that a kid tried too destroy in hopes of getting a new pc from his mom.
    (Yeah it didn't work.)
    (Destroyed motherboard but the rest worked fine & i was allowed too keep the parts from the rest of the system, case,ram,powersupply which i sold too another guy,gpu, harddrives.
    (Had sold him a 400w powersupply & my Sapphire HD 5770 lite 1 gb along with moving a harddrive from one of his moms old pc's too that one a 320 gb drive.)
    (2x 6 pins on it & decent quality for the time & still a solid unit imo silverpower 400w 80 plus bronze based on seasonic S12 design.)
    An Athlon II x3 445 3.1 ghz which i unlocked too a quad core cpu.
    (Screws over temperature sensors on the cores which i told him about that it wasn't anything too worry about unless the processor is stuck at 800 mhz which it wasn't.)
    (Originally a dual core athlon in the system which i think he threw away for some reason as well.)

    I always use the inner tip of a mechanical pencil, .7mm i believe. It allows more precise movement of the pin while also being soft plastic as to not put a lot of force against the rest of the pins.

    The other day, I got the my 2700x to fit on the motherboard, mounted the cooler and everything until the computer just refused to boot. LED on the motherboard wouldn't light up. I then proceed to spend an hour checking the motherboard, PSU, Ram, etc. until there was nothing but the CPU to check and my heart skipped a beat when I noticed there are 3 CPU pins in a corner that got bent. I managed to bend them back, using a toothpick, and fit it in the motherboard socket. The moment it booted up I wept.

    Some of the worst rigs I've encountered as regards bent pins have been business PC's based on old Intel Pentium 4's and thermal pads. They'd sat in storage for a very long time and the pads had all literally set like concrete. However a quick and fairly easy remedy was to simply turn the machines on for a few minutes in order to warm up/expand what was left of the pad, switch off, then quickly and gently twist the cooler back and forth to help loosen things up some more. And it didn't take long at all for some of those Pentium 4 CPU's to warm up..

    Had to do this exact thing today on a A10-7800 because it stuck to the heatsink of the dead cooler and when it was removed it fell into the computer case. Now waiting on the new CPU cooler to see if it worked well but it fitted back into the motherboard socket without any problems so I'm very hopeful.

    Just recently i bent some of the pins on my ryzen 7 1700 while swapping the cooler, somehow the crap included thermal paste glued it to de IHS, the cpu came off the socket even with the retention arm down, bending some pins on the way out because i tried to remove it with a twisting motion. The pins on ryzen are even smaller than the ones on the video, needless to say i was a very scared when bending them back in place, i used some precision tools that are meant for soldering, luckily it was pretty easy to put all of them in place and it has been working fine since, but the fear of losing such an expensive component thanks to some crap thermal paste was real.

    While the pins are generally tougher on a PGA not to get bend easily with a slight bump, The problem with Ryzen is that its pins are thinner (and more malleable) than the old K8-10 socket CPUs and there's 1,331 of them clusetered together with a relatively tighter space between. it will be much harder fixing bent Ryzen pins in comparison.

    A tooth pick works better. If you run it down the rows it spaces them relatively well and if a few pins are particularly bent then you can use the tooth pick on the very tip of the pin with almost no pressure and coerce it back upright.

    Try using a propellant pencil, just remove the lead and put the pin into the end and straighten. They come sized 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 mm sizes so all CPU pins are covered. I think AMD were 0.5 mm. if they are too near the tha adjacent row you will have to use a sharp edge to open the gap then micro adjust with the pencil.

    Fixing bent pins in an intel socket is way worse. I used a protractor to straighten AMD pins, it has a pizza cutter edge and is just slim enough to glide between the rows, unless it's bent horizontal, then a cocktail stick or sewing needle comes in handy.

    I did it myself with an old Athlon. 20 minutes or so gave me a working CPU.

    Hey Random, would be cool to see a video on Alienware Steam Machines. Either the first gen or the second gen. I know the second gen have the option to use external gpus which could make 2 videos.

      anwar ul haq they cant be sli’d. With this new generation of cards, they only allowed it on the 1070 and higher. Windows 10 has a feature called a sync compute, if my memory recalls correctly that allowed any 2 GPU’s to be ran together. The problem is that very few games support this feature.

    you know what i dont get, why dont they use some kind of plastic mock-up of a socket to protects the pins on the cpu like when you get a new LGA motherboard but the fake socket just clips on too the cpu instead

    • @stevesmith1383
      @stevesmith1383 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      easy, it's about saving money
      same reason why AMD cpu's don't have integrated graphics aside from APU's, intel has garbage stock fans, and intel stopped soddering their cpu's after Sandy Bridge and instead use cheap paste/TIM
      plus they do normally give you that plastic wrap the cpu comes in out of the box so you can keep that.
