We didn't have a fire escape, nor a ladder or rope for a three story apartment., so.... I made my own rope by braiding the strips of plastic bags.
I made strips just like you did. I made many strips hooked together to long, long, long. Very long because I knew I'd lose length when they were braided together. Then braided strips again together by threes. I kept going until it was thick enough to be strong enough to use as a rope. A plastic rope. About 2 in. wide multiple braided throw down, out the window fire escape rope.
I had a tug-a-war test with some ppl. It was incredibly strong and as long as a 3 story floor window escape.

You can use the cut-offs to stuff patio or porch pillows, so that they are more water-resistant.

I made large mats for the kids to sit on at the sandy beaches, also mats work great for the kids to play on the grass.

Thanks so much for sharing this video! The Ladies at our Church got together and made plarn to use to make the plastic mats for the homeless, like you were talking about. I got my mat started, but didn't finish it. Since then I had forgotten how to make the plarn, so this video is so very helpful. Now I can go back and finish my project. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

I love this! I've also seen stories about items for the homeless, such a great upcycle of something most people throw away.
I always reuse some of my bags for used cat litter, various of my waste baskets, or putting wet/sloppy kitchen garbage in (I'm in an apt). I keep a large dept store bag in my pantry for shoving all my grocery bags in, and when full I take them to the grocery store and put in their bag recycle bin, keeping the large bag to reuse over and over. In the past we also recycled the bags by taking to our local library, and also a food bank.

Typically I use my bags as garbage bags. I intentionally keep all the waste baskets in the house of a small enough size that the grocery bags can be used in them so I never have to buy garbage bags :)

    • @RainCountryHomestead

I do sleep! haha! Sometimes I sleep more than others but for me it has to be about planning my day, if I don't it would be too difficult to get anything done at all. It is also about prioritizing, get the most important things done first and if time does not allow me to get it all done, I try to not allow myself to feel guilty about it :)

Years ago, I tried this but became discouraged when it took so long to prepare the yarn because I cut the bags one at a time. :-o DUMB!!! :-\ Anywho...now that I've seen a simpler, faster way to prepare the yarn, I might just attempt this again. Also, at the time, I was knitting everything, but I think that crochet will be a faster method of achieving the same thing. Hello Heidi ! This is pretty cool!!! Plastic is pretty strong when put together this way, about a year and a half ago I took the plastic from a sleeve of cups from work, cut into strips lengthwise, braided it into a bracelet, it stayed strong for nearly a year, I’m sure it would have continued to stay strong, but I lost it, the slip knots kept loosening, it must of slipped off. I’ve been saving the plastic when stocking cups to make a blanket, I’d like to make it by way of a loom if I can figure out how to make a loom that is manageable. Then sow sheets on either side of plastic blanket. I’m not sure if the end product will look or hold together by feeding loose bags though the strings, seeing how wool must be spun before feeding through the strings of the loom. What’s ur thoughts on feeding loose cup sleeves through strings on a loom??? sleeves r roughly 2’ long. I’m aware that u may not have any experience with a loom, but feel u’d know better than I. Thank u

I have been racking my brain to come up with something similar to what I’m talking about, and the only thing I can think of that I’m sure you’ll know is...picnic/party cups, though here, the plastic their n, most call it a package. I’m not 100% sure how the name sleeve came to be, but what makes sense to me is, a sleeve covers the arm, a plastic sleeve covers a stack of cups. Also the plastic sleeve/package containing the party cups is a different material than our sleeves, they r closer to the plastic u use to make the bag ur making.
