Digitech's Jason Lamb visits the PG offices and walks us through one of their hottest products, the RP500. For a MSRP of $299, DigiTech proves to give us a bang for our buck. For more gear knowledge, www.premierguitar.com
During my journey thru the effect pedal/effects processors world, I have owned all of the name brands. The Boss, M6, Zoom, Digitech, etc. I started with the RP500 and after two years and several thousand dollars, I am back to the RP500. Great tones, nice features, solid construction, and most important, easy to use. The X-Edit patch management software is a dream to use and for all of you tweakers, it's Heaven sent. With the firmware 2.0 download, you also get a 20 sec. looper. Rock on \m/
I have the option of buying it used $150. Is that a good price now? Thanks for your review, I was wondering if it had a looper and I know now. Just looking to practice, wish it had a drum machine too :)
you can smooth out much of the harshness by pressing the mixer button in the back. even into an amp it smooths out the harshness. i used to do this with a rp3 too. by turning on the cab modeling that was just designed for use with a mixer and running it straight thru the power amp in on my amp it removed all the harshness and smoothed it right out. made it sound professional. I get great sounds with my rp500.
ive had my rp500 since late year and i carry it around pretty much every other day to band practice and i've used it in about 30-40 shows and it's still going good. they really out did themselves
I just got my rp500 today and am amazed, 100% improved the tone of my peavey 6505 . Love how I can just plug my guitar into the unit, plug some headphones in and just practice on the couch. One of the best things i've ever bought
I used my RP500 playing live gigs, and it was great. I used it both straight into a PA, and as a pedalboard into a mic'd amp/cab. After a 10 year hiatus, I dusted it off this week and fell in love with it again. Even the tone library presets are amazing. It's a shame that Digitech didn't transition to the present. I enjoyed their multifx systems. It would've been interesting to see what was possible with USB, bluetooth, and IR technologies we have now.
I love these effect modeling boards, My tube amp sits collecting dust after I got an rp500... The tones I get out of it were exactly what I have been looking for. The thing is versatile as hell
Its really easy man, to be honest I havent really got into storing my own effects yet. But the computer software that comes with it is great. Its like a Big interface of the pedal and when you change settings on the computer the pedal changes too. Then you can save and move effects around, its great. If anything the sounds coming out of this thing are just amazing.
I bought this pedal at Guitar Center about 3 years ago...Still running strong and it's just perfect. Honestly guys if you have a big selection of smaller pedals like i used to have, sale them on craigslist or ebay and buy this. It's just fuckin perfect. The only flaw that it has is they're no drum machine... But it's not really a big deal because you can Torrent some nice free ones or find some off of Google to DL. Keep on rockin guys.
No problem. It's a firmware update, so make sure your use the X-edit software to back up all the patches or it will erase them all! It's very easy to do. I love mine!
I owned/owned various amp, bognershiva,VHTpitpull, budda super and a 1971 fendervibrolux, and Im VERY pleased with the tone of the Rp500 ,it is meant to sound best through a poweramp/speaker ( so there is no coloration of the sound)imo.
Yeah and a decent amp. Digitech is great stuff regardless of what it's critics say. My RP350 has great sounds through my Twin, Classic 30, Blues Jr and Classic 20.
it dont suck thts just his opinion i love it it has everything i need. but my best advice in this case is that u got to sm shops nd try out as many as u can nd find what YOU like not what other ppl like cs ur tryin to get YOUR sound not someone elses
There are things I like about my pedal: USB out is a cool feature and I use it a lot for recording. Headphones out is also a good feature. But the amp models can't replace a real amp. They just sound too fake. And sometimes it's really hard to get rid of the harshness. FX models don't really sound that good - try real stompboxes and they sound a lot better. But yeah, they are what they are and give you a good picture of how the real thing sounds like. You get what you pay for - it's decent.
you can crank the pedal down i believe ;) the only thing that could be bad about it is that it all will alter your original sound so you have to adjust settings to your specific wishes
I've tried all these multi-pedals. I still have a Boss Me 25 and a Digitech RP 255. I tried Line 6 HD and Boss GT100.....the Zoom G5 can't be beaten for the price and has the best modelling this side of axe fx. Only my opinion! Hope this helps.
I like when the guy play with the natural distorsion of his amp in bypass, I would using the rp500 with a analog pedals or the distorsion of some vintage amp... the true bypass are a good solution...
Yeah I'm playing through a PA at Church, so I think this would work fine, Im leaning towards the Boss ME70. They are both the same price but the boss seems a better deal with the looper and all
@boroslash its definatly gotta be the digitech rp 500, i had both, the me 70 was brilliant with assortments of different effects, however the digitech seemed to feel more alive and real rather than the me 70 wihich felt like a typical multi-effects pedal feels like, un-natural, dead and fizzy. The digitech rp500 is worth its money and feels so much more alive and the possiblilities are endless to create and contrrol YOUR sound which is what every guitarist ever wants. Reccomended :)
@Englishbobwv I think If you have modeled amp tones it'll be okay. I mean it will be as digital as amp modeling is. You can always play through the amp using it as a monitor and connect it USB to record.
Dude, how 'bout showing how to tweak the compressor, chorus, delay, or anything? We know you can make monsters of rock sounds, but would love to hear some other sounds, or see you assign delay level to expression pedal.
i am totally agree with you... but seems that metal sells more or happens that many people goes to the store and say "hmmm i would like a pedal with good metal sound" or something like that...
@Wallu1991 You can still use the up-down buttons in stomp mode, this gives you more flexibility. I was going to rig a detachable extension to the patch sw. to turn it on and off but since finding out that bank up and down works in stomp mode I won't bother, just gang up the patches I use most in consec. locations. As the 1000 costs a £100 more for 5 buttons, way better .
@g00b3rsVAN Yes, it's pretty much the same. The rp1000 has a few more effects and amp models, but they're very much the same. HOWEVER, the five additional switches make the use a lot easier and I wish I had paid the little extra to be able to switch the effects without switching between the preset and stompbox modes.
mmmmm, the same i have read in many blogs. Maybe my decision should be for the vox tonelab, but im still impressed with the zoom g9 distortions, besides, im not a tech freak, i prefer knobs than those squeeke chewing gum buttons, so the tonelab would be ok. Big and intrincate effect chains are not my style, good sound is all for me. Again, i will make a little additional research and decide. But decision is almost taken, the VOX! (heard it at youtube and, wow, still the best).
I think this can be a great rig depending on your application. I'd never use this with my real rig, but I just started playing at a church and I can't bring my amp in, they run everything through DI boxes and a big mixer so I can't get of my analog tube sound anyway. I think I might buy one of these to leave at the church so I don't have to lug in my pedal board twice a week.
I'm sorry Perhaps a trip to the ear doctor is in order You know I am probabbly buying this Digitech to use in a loop since it has a global amp/cabinet shutoff, AND it has an intelligent pitch shifter that will harmonize in harmonic minor as well as the natural key I already own an RP-12 as well
well it depends on your amp because i tried it on my cousins cheap line 6 spider III 15w and it sounds horrible but my amp broke as soon as i bought it so i never heard it on the amp so i use it on my computer speakers :P sounded way better than on his amp
I dont know why you got a thumb down,my Digitech whammy is an essential part of my rig but I always have two on hand because honestly they are unreliable.I have to have one thing or another done or complete replacement of these pedals every 3 yrs..So I can believe what you said without a doubt. And digitech is known for being unreliable thats a fact. But its affordable gear so there will always be people that swear by them.I will get Thumbs down but its the truth, and dont really care, lol.
Are you using it near any appliances such as computers, tv sets, or defribulation machines? Are you using it near any florescent lights? Are your cables old?
@denisgiann well, I'm an electronic engineer, I know all i have to know About both devices and their technique specs, And I rather GT 10 :) It's way better for sure, but, it's all about tastes, If you like the rp500 more, it's totally great! CHEERS MY FRIEND!
Around 1995 I bought a Digitech GSP 2101 awesome Sounding best I ever heard but It had a lack of memory like only 2 effects could be used with the Gigaverb & It quit working right & do Not know where to get It repaired. Then I got Digitech GNX 3000 but I did It lack Shimmer & I did Not think It Sound as good. Then I got a Delta Lab combine It with a few Danelectro & Behringer pedals & Its great. The other night EBay I bought a used Digitech RP500 for $175.00 I can't afford new stuff any more
Had this for a couple weeks to replace all the cluster f#%k of pedals I was using. The presets are just there to get you started..once you get in there and start tweaking the settings you can get some great sounds. The guy on this video (no offence)does not do this board justice. Will try and post a video response soon. But for under $300 this puppy rocks.
ohhh but least you can still add more to it its like loads of effects in one for like 300+ dollars i can just get 3 pedals cause i just need dalay compressor and a reverb and it almost cost same price all in all so id rather get the rp 500
@denisgiann well I've never been a person that would give such a responsibility to an effects processor only, I think that there's nothing like having a really good amplifier to determine your tone, The amp sims, is only a plus in effects processors....
It just seems really dumb that you need to press a button with your finger to put the RP500 into "stomp mode." They must have stayed up all night wondering how they could defeat the purpose of an otherwise good idea. Real smooth.
Which one do you think has the most "real gear" sounds?. I have also heard the line 6 pod live xt, well, very good clean sounds (excellent modulators), but the main flaw, distortions arent as good as those in the zoom g9. The zoom g9, the opposite thing, very good distortions, top notch, but so so clean sounds. Next one, i will try a rocktron utopia, ill tell you how it was.
I was looking at the RP1000 first, but sounds like the RP500 would work just fine. However, is it possible to use your amp's preamp distortions with this unit? I assume that in this case, you use the RP500 in the effects loop? ok compare this to the boss gt10, which is better? i have the boss me 50 and 70 but i want something that can do vastly more! something like the gt10 or rp1000 but i cant decided which is better...
I have a question. Could the RP500 be like the Edge's pedal board from U2? Meaning, can i play "get on your boots", and turn on/off effects of that song?
Ive owned this product for a year and in all honesty the effects were cool at first, but the tones lose their likability after a while. i dont know if its the components or what, but imo they are starting sound tinny and unfocused

Just quality tones, I love mine

Nasty shoes dude..... lol
Great tutorial. I didn't realize this had amp and cab modeling
Good demo. I still LOVE my Digitech RP500.
thanks man i was thinking about getting this but it looked really hard to use. i am definitely getting one now. thanks once again :D
I just got this for x-mas! I cannot wait to use it!!!
It's got a lot of very nice clean tones to it too
I owned/owned various amp, bognershiva,VHTpitpull, budda super and a 1971 fendervibrolux, and Im VERY pleased with the tone of the Rp500 ,it is meant to sound best through a poweramp/speaker ( so there is no coloration of the sound)imo.
I thought the RP500 was a lot but wait til you look at the RP1000, I would cry if I had to operate that. MultiFX baffle me, I'm a single-effect guy.
Yeah and a decent amp. Digitech is great stuff regardless of what it's critics say. My RP350 has great sounds through my Twin, Classic 30, Blues Jr and Classic 20.
Hi, I had The RP500 and say you that metal sounds are greats! highly configurable... the sounds are very reallistec... regards.
FORGET PEDALBOARDS and the wire mess, WE GOT THIS!!!!
it dont suck thts just his opinion i love it it has everything i need. but my best advice in this case is that u got to sm shops nd try out as many as u can nd find what YOU like not what other ppl like cs ur tryin to get YOUR sound not someone elses
I'm going to get it like today!... no not the DigiTech the boots! lol
Yes, I think so... but they also make the RP 1000 which specifically has that function in mind.
his shoes are overwhelming!
There are things I like about my pedal: USB out is a cool feature and I use it a lot for recording. Headphones out is also a good feature.

I love this pedal. Sounds amazing. Now the the competition is which is better? BOSS ME-25 or Digitech RP500
look at this guy's shoes!! damn son...

Reccomended :)
@EganQuigley182
Yes. Whammy, detune, octave up and down (as well as 1/2 octave), dive bomb, etc.
@Englishbobwv I think If you have modeled amp tones it'll be okay. I mean it will be as digital as amp modeling is. You can always play through the amp using it as a monitor and connect it USB to record.
Ay! For the line 6 amp I got the same one. To fix the clean so the fx sound doesn't come up u hold down the clean button n dats it :)
Oh yes there is, but i don't know where to turn it on.
This is actually a great product too bad this Guy really really sucks at demonstrating it's ability
@Wallu1991 You can still use the up-down buttons in stomp mode, this gives you more flexibility. i play U2 and other non heavy stuff and its awesome how it sounds its strength is amp modelling
Sweet kicks
I guess (not sure though) you can use compressor right after you wah...see the map of the circuit of the pedal effect... it is possible...
Had this bout a year n love it. Make
They put drums in the smaller units...Why not this??? I still own it though.
it works with every amp :P and i think you just can activate the wah by hitting a button and then just press the footpedal.
mmmmm, the same i have read in many blogs. Maybe my decision should be for the vox tonelab, but im still impressed with the zoom g9 distortions, besides, im not a tech freak, i prefer knobs than those squeeke chewing gum buttons, so the tonelab would be ok. (heard it at youtube and, wow, still the best).
@EganQuigley182 : you can assign any fx that you want to the expression pedal. I use the X-Edit software and it is a snap!

You know I am probabbly buying this Digitech to use in a loop since it has a global amp/cabinet shutoff, AND it has an intelligent pitch shifter that will harmonize in harmonic minor as well as the natural key
I already own an RP-12 as well
Its an combination of Amps/Pedal/Cabinet
well it depends on your amp because i tried it on my cousins cheap line 6 spider III 15w and it sounds horrible but my amp broke as soon as i bought it so i never heard it on the amp so i use it on my computer speakers :P sounded way better than on his amp
You ain't gonna kill no cockroaches with them boots!
@1sTrav because only "metal" players actually appreciate the types of sounds coming out of this thing.
Actually i find that the latest Digitech pedals (e.g. RP355) have better sounding compression and distiortion and amp modeling than the Boss's.
exactly right. Too much really. Can we get a Joe Walsh sound out of this unit?
We have no idea really.
HEYY!!! You son plays on iCarly... his name is Gibby, right?
1000 has a switching system and effects loop
@denisgiann well, I'm an electronic engineer, I know all i have to know About both devices and their technique specs, And I rather GT 10 :) It's way better for sure, but, it's all about tastes, If you like the rp500 more, it's totally great! CHEERS MY FRIEND!

nice boots men!!!
so basically, i could have 5 delays, or 5 filters or 5 distortion or 3 distortions and 2 filters or 1 phaser, 2 delays, a whammy pedal and a wah?
ohhh but least you can still add more to it its like loads of effects in one for like 300+ dollars i can just get 3 pedals cause i just need dalay compressor and a reverb and it almost cost same price all in all so id rather get the rp 500

Never mind Just saw it at the end :)
Tonelab kills this for, well, tone
im sold
Is this the same as the rp1000, ignoring the fact that the rp1000 has 5 more stomp buttons on it?
vox se and le are excellent along with tc nova system
Nice shoes
I was looking at the RP1000 first, but sounds like the RP500 would work just fine. However, is it possible to use your amp's preamp distortions with this unit? I assume that in this case, you use the RP500 in the effects loop? I love the crunches on my new Bandit 112 Transtube and would like to be able to use them along with the RP500's modulation effects/whammy/wah.
Thanks!
I looked at the user manual and it doesnt talk about an effects loop application
wait you can combine this with single stomp boxes right?
he needs to not add delay before the amp it sounds bad but threw the loop would sound fine
Yes, it has a flanger...Well, more than one.
but ME-20 is much more cheaper than the RP500. right?
@FredFan8 that's good question its all on what you like me personally I love digitech boss tones tend to all sound the same
yea the rp500 im almost certain it records
You can easily beat Boss' prices, those bastards are expensive.
Hamer. Not sure what model though.
Can I use this with a Digitech gsp 1101 and have it for different channels? Like 1 is clean, 2 is lead, 3 is rhythm and so on?
i'm about to purchase it but i have one question, is the overdrive, distortion, gain good?
how does this stack up to a boss me-50? which is better? which has more n better effects along with tones? which is faster n easier to use? which has better sound quality?
and does the digitech have a built in noise gate? cause i have the boss me-50 and it has a threshold which is kinda like a noise gate, however it sucks really bad i still get lot of feedback with that thing on full!
which one is more user friendly pocket pod or rp500
and does rp 500 have the patch system like pod.......
if yes which one has more and better
@BoBBieBoBBie430 there is a looper, you have to download new software, its a 20 second looper
Whatchu Talkin' Bout Willis?
Tubes are better than pure digital tone anyday
nah nah i dont mind. Coz i was thinking of getting 1 multi efx unit without the need to get any of those singular pedal...so yea..
ok compare this to the boss gt10, which is better?
i have the boss me 50 and 70 but i want something that can do vastly more!
something like the gt10 or rp1000 but i cant decided which is better...
I have a question. Could the RP500 be like the Edge's pedal board from U2? Meaning, can i play "get on your boots", and turn on/off effects of that song?
my RP90 doesn't match up to my whammy pedal
dude is there an inbuilt looper in this model..
if yes then how much time can it loop upto...
also does it have a recorder as it was in GNX3 model....
Ive owned this product for a year and in all honesty the effects were cool at first, but the tones lose their likability after a while. i dont know if its the components or what, but imo they are starting sound tinny and unfocused
