The tire flew right over me in the stands! What a scary moment!
What a story to tell though. How close was it actually? It's hard to tell from the camera angles but it looked like it was no more than 20 feet above the crowd.
Can’t imagine that at all. Surely it would’ve been catastrophic?

For almost 10 years. As a Hoosier, my family have been making have making it a tradition to watch the Indy 500 on tv live since the 99th or 100th running. The 107th was a classic race filled with excitement and thrills. Can't wait for the 108th running next year in May. Hopefully one day i can see it live. Been to qualifying twice. Once in 2010 and second in 2015.
Hope you get to the race someday. The tickets are not very expensive. I usually sit in turn four. Great time!
The last laps with accidents made the race more exciting.
I thought I was looking at the wrong highligts. Marcus in the lead two laps left. But noooo, he could not make it again. Strong anyway I think. 💪

Would have been interesting to see if Erickson would have one if he had just exited the corner properly and not kept turning. Wonder if extra exit speed would have been enough vs swerving in the slip stream

I would have enjoyed the race more if CBS had limited its commercials. More than once it seemed like the race was commercials first, and race second.
I was there and I was rooting for newgarden or ward at least one of them won
That commentator is that Aussie guy I remember from 20 years ago in superbikes. Thought he'd disappeared.

2nd Indy 500 seemingly running without any firm rule about red flags, which is even worse than NASCAR's artificial fake racing. I think I'm done with IndyCar after this season after more than 30 years of following.

Never watched indy 500 and I though I see what's up with a highlight. Seem pretty cool. Still not a fan of oval racing but I get that it takes a giant amount of god like concentration to do what they do for 500 miles.
My ignorant self stands corrected. This is quite a race and I get why it's one of the top races like Le Mans.
Not lets go watch a proper highlight video cause this one isn't all that great.

Hey just a suggestion, you should just show the last 2 laps without interruption. You don’t even show the last lap pass.

Why do the rows start so far apart, if the second row was closer at the start the 4th. place car would have been in second before turn 1.

I am a F1 fan and this year is my first one watching indycar and the indianapolis500 thanks to Canapino. I loved all the circuit races and this mythical oval was much more entertaining than the last year and a half of f1, thanks indy for such entertaining races, greetings from argentina.
True, even with that joke ending it was still so much more entertaining than the dog-poo that F1 is serving up :)
Oval racing is the pinnacle of entertainment and skill.
Remember that Indy car is for driver who are not able to win in F1 🤣 this race was fun but I don't see where we can compare with F1... not the same thing. Glad you enjoyed the race but don't understand why you compare two different sports... 😅
I enjoy both for what each offers but I gotta say I prefer road racing to oval track. The sheer speed of oval track racing is fun but I think road racing is more entertaining.
@@AD_IceKK7 The only difference I have observed is that, in F1, 95% of the time we know who will win even before the weekend starts and in Indy 500, 95% of the time during the Race you don't know who will win! 😉

Well as an IndyCar fan and someone who just attended their 23rd Indy 500, I say "c'mon in guys, we'd love to have you as the newest IndyCar fans!"
That Rosenqvist and Kirkwood crash was one the scariest crashes i've seen

Weaving on the straight is okay... but crossing the pit lane entry line must be penalized before someone whacks the attenuator
This was my first Indy 500 I’ve attended. I’m a Pato fan. Pato gave me a better first Indy 500 than I could have ever asked for. What a day

He 100% sent it... almost won it last year but backed off and Ericsson won.. this year he didnt lift on the outside and paid the price. His day will come at Indy he really goes all out

Sato is my favorite racer, but I was rooting for Pato too. I was so bummed when he crashed.
The people complaining about the race finishing under green with 2 laps left are the same people who would complain if they finished under yellow. People just love to complain and feel like they're opinion is right. No matter what i had a great time watching the race and i have no problems with how the race ended.

I'm pretty neutral on the whole thing, but as long as only 200 laps were raced, I'm fine.
Watching F1 about 30years… but this is something else so exciting.
The ovals are awesome.

If they were using NASCAR rules, he would have probably gotten a commitment cone violation for that one!
too dangerous cause there's a wall up there, but it's racing and even if I dont cheer him, I think it's ok.
I understand wanting to break the draft, but that was a bit much. The end of pit wall isn't forgiving.

Officials really botched it in the end with all the red flags.
Decent race. Not a fan of red flags used for entertainment purposes. As drivers generally get less respectful the catastrophic is going to happen. But I missed about half the race with commercials. Streaming on peacock doesn’t have side by side for commercial and I’m not paying double the subscription for it.

As a Brit, I only started watching Indycar a few years ago and, with a slight affinity for Tennessee, ended up landing on Josef as 'my guy' to support. Thought he was a bit unlucky in the championship last year, so really happy for him to finally get this moment!

already happened in the past :( I was PRAYING, literally.
It did happen in 1998 during the US 500 at Michigan Speedway when a wheel from Adrian Fernandez car went straight into the grandstands after he hit the wall at 240mph.
Three people were killed instantly & six were injured.
Those killed were unrecognisable sadly, a very tragic day that was :(

I was with tears of joy when Joseph Newgarden won then when he went into the stands to celebrate with the fans was just incredibly epic! Way to go Joseph!!

This edit is like Formula E. The bits are too short, the cuts are too quick, the commentators scream their lungs out.. it's not great to watch.

We had my dad and his friend round here in the uk and from the green flag we are on the edge of our seats and the last 10 laps we were on our feet the whole time absolute chaos
Good race, questionable closing laps in terms of officiation and how the drivers were. It was like a modern NASCAR race.
But other than that, it was still a good race. GG, Josef!

Indycar needs to get some more control of the restarts, guys we’re jumping like crazy mid pack. Shouldn’t be able to go three wide before you get to the middle of turn 4
OMG what a amazing freaking race this is. My first ever Indy 500. Was a F1 fan since 1997. But recently F1 has become too monotonous and predictable. I thought I will give Indycar a try. Texas 2023 was first Indycar race I watched. I was awestruck with that race. I decided on that day, I should some how watch Indy 500 once in my life. Stars aligned and I made last minute plans to 500. What an atmosphere.. Whole city has the vibe. It will hype you up. Those cute neighborhoods close to speedway with all kinds if banners and “welcome race fans” messages, you will fall in love with the city. It will hype you up while you are walking towards speedway. Then once I hear the goldeb words “This is and always will be the greatest spectacle in motor racing”, goosebumps will be gauranteed. First half was good although no much action. But second half and especially last 50 laps were scintillating. I was bummed when Texas race ended in yellow. I was so glad they dint end 500 race with yellow. The last lap shoot was amazing. From now on, I’m the fan of Indycar world.
Indianapolis on race day is sensational. Like you said, walking through the cute neighborhoods and obviously inside the speedway. Loved your comment!
F1 is about the series championship. NASCAR is about the series championship and Daytona. But IndyCar is definitely about the 500.
From an F1 fan interested in getting to know Indy, whoever is in charge of the highlights must get fired. Wtf was even this? Every incident is just shown like for half a second with no context. Very bad way to attract new fans. Gutted for Pato and very lucky no one got hit by that tire.

Another exhilarating 500, massive congrats to Newgarden on his long overdue win. However I do think Indycar should implement a Green- White - Chequer rule moving forward, so the drivers and the fans know how the race will end. You’ve got to feel for Ericsson, any other race would’ve finished under yellow under normal circumstances.
Too many drama and too many big wrecks. 2023 Indianapolis 500 is simply TOKIMEKI!

Was my first time watching F1 at Monaco today (I'm told this is the best race for F1) and then also first time watched American racing, the Indy500 was awesome, lots of action at the lazy 50 laps (again I'm told this is the best race in America).....what a way to start watching racecars😍🤘
F1 monaco usually is boring because there is 0 chance of overtaking. Racing usually is a lot better at indycar because cars are equal and push to pass also beats DRS in terms of producing good racing

Me too guys.. watching only Formula E, IndyCar, MotoGP. Formula 1 is boring in the last 10 years. Hamilton and Max V. dominated and killed the show.

I've never known a commentator more wrong all the time than Townsend Bell.
Also slightly biased to certain drivers and willing to have a full on argument with co commentators about his favourite drivers being ok when they break rules.

To all those "coming from watching F1" and appreciating how intense Indy races are, this is no news.
Indycar (or back in the days IRL and CART) was ALWAYS more spectacular than F1. For 2 reasons in particular: A, 90% of the chassis were the same, if not all of them, and B, no stupid rules and penalties. Because of that, more people had more chance at winning at least once. Everybody is still excited coz 2021 F1 season was VERY WELL marketed and actually nail biting, but the reality is that pretty much every other motorsport (except nascar maybe) always was ad is far more exciting.
Today's wrestling-like F1 DESERVES to be boycotted.
A commercial break every ten laps is the "highlight" I'll be telling my grandchildren about.
it's honestly not as bad as any nascar broadcast....this was tolerable especially the side by side
10 laps max! When I was counting there were commercial every 7 laps. Terrible coverage, terrible race.
In the USA its on free TV. Youve gotta pay 30 quid a month to watch F1 in Europe. Suck it up

Just can't hold a candle to the 1990's Indys. 100% due to this being spec series, whereas CART was a real manufacturers' battle.
Hey guys. Just a question why all the zigzagging by the first place here at 5:24? Why the second place followed the same zigzag and didn’t pass him? Real question. I’ve been under cars since I was 6 but is my first timer watching this kind of race.
Marcus was robbed by Penske. Funny how the last lap was stopped and red flagged. Everyone knows leader is a sitting duck. Who was in second, Penkse driver, who owns the track Penske!
This is the worst recap I’ve ever seen. Every highlight was basically the aftermath of a pass, no buildup. Don’t use AI to make highlight reels for one of the most important sporting events.
The race summaries should be improved, all very short, the moments don't pass completely and they make watching the video very stressful.

3:40 thei carsh asent a tyre flying over the stands and destroyed a spectators car. All she got to say sorry was an offer of kissing the bricks. what a half assed gesture. Pay for a new car, probably a better one. The problem is something like this happens every year. It's either someone getting seriously hurt, killed or serious spectator property damage. When are wheel tethers going to be demanded, when is the track saftey gonna be seriously looked at? this is unacceptable.
Thank goodness the tire didn't flew back on to the track. You wouldn't want another Justin Wilson, Henry Surtees situation.
