Closed Loop Servo Motor vs Stepper Motors

  • Replaced my stepper motors on my homemade CNC with closed loop hybrid servo motors. I was having accuracy issues which was resolved with the motor replacement. This is a how to install stepper motors. The hybrid stepper servo motor is model # KL 34AN1000 and the servo drivers are model # KL 8082H which I bought from Automated Technologies. Since my motors are installed on the moving gantry, the wiring needs to be lengthened considerably for both the motors and encoder. The hybrid servo motors have a built-in rotary encoder for better accuracy and performance. I replaced the KL 8060 driver and the KL 34H 2120-60-4A stepper motors. A vast improvement in accuracy, smoothness, noise and heat generation.

      @@OldGuyWoodworks i am just beginning to update a cnc with new servos, pretty large industrial but they are basically the same as smaller ones. Mine also is laser instead of router

      Push come to shove, I would go closed loop. Can't think of a reason not to.

    Are they much more accurate when milling compared to the regular stepper ? Mine is off .010 when I mill pockets no matter what I do. Even though the machine moves within .001 accuracy when setting the steps per inch .

      It's been awhile and I can't recall. I do know I like them much better. They run smoother, quieter and not as hot for sure. The performance of my cnc increased quite a bit when I changed over.

    Hi, Thanks for the video. However I have a few questions for you to consider.
    First off, I should start by stating that I am a laser guy. Specifically Co2 Laser gantry systems. What I am interested in is resolutions that can at least hang with my current 3-phase NEMA 23's with a driver micro-step setting of 5K.
    I don't necessarily need more top end speeds, but rather quicker acceleration/deceleration ability without worrying about jumping steps. Granted these hybrids should take care of this.
    However I was warned by a company CEO (A major Chinese laser supplier based here in the states) that when they attempted to replace their open loop stepper system with these Lead-shine hybrids, it actually reduced the quality of resolution according to him, and he claims that going back to the standard steppers resolved the issues.
    While I trust most things this guy says, as he has been more often right than not, I believe he might have been hasty in missing the fact these driver/motor combos require manual setup through their software serial ports.
    So.... My questions are. Are you aware of said software, and if so have you messed around with it?
    Lastly I recall you stating that you left the driver step value set to a value of 1600? I realize the lower setting are intended for a higher torque per step/rev. However this in my opinion defeats the purpose of going to a closed loop system that utilizes an encoder. I don't know what your previous steppers where set to, but you should be able to retain well above the open loop steppers you previously had in step value and still retain an abundance of torque. So why? I run my open loops on my laser at 5K micro-steps. This is in addition to having them system pulley reduced to a 2:1 ratio, further increasing my resolution by twice it's driver/micro-step values. Seeing how you're a mill man, I would think you're seriously cheating yourself to the high res advantages of running closed loop drives, especially for a slow moving mill. (By slow moving, I mean in reference to my x axis being able to run in excess of 850mm/s.

      Thanks for the info. It obvious to me you are much more informed on this subject than I am. I am not using any other software other than Mach 4. The original steppers and the new steppers didn't have the same dip switch settings. Since I wasn't that familiar with them, I just went with the default setting unless I knew exactly what I needed or wanted. Resolution and accuracy hasn't been a problem for me since I installed these new motors, in fact it never operated as well as it does now. Since it works so much better, I went with it. Taking into consideration what you told me, I can see I might be selling myself short and may change those settings higher and see what happens. Thanks for the input.

    if you dont connected the encoder wires . only the stepper motor wires connected..what will happen ?

      Absolutely nothing. Funny you mention that. I did it that thinking I could just skip the encoder to test run it. No go at all.

    I need closed loop steppers on little 6040 cnc.. If I'm doing a 3d cut I lose steps z... And my work gets ruined 😔😔

      It made a noticeable difference on mine. It runs much smoother and not near as hot.
