Trevor, I have property at Ram's Horn down the road Estes Park -- The Sept/early Oct Elk Rut is our favorite time of year to go -- couple of weeks per year and going to Morraine Park -- VAST meadow where this was filmed, from early afternoon til pitch dark, there will be 1000's - maybe more, female elks who come during mating season. Truly -- thousands. And the enormous racked-bull elks come down from the mountains to choose their harem - new again every single day. The bull elks have usually completed their challenges using their racks -- the racks are strong, unusual to see a broken one but easy to imagine if they get tangled. Up until nearly dark the larger more confident bulls will continue making their way down --- you will hear their whistle, coming from deep in the belly strong sounds to this very prolonged high pitch whistle -- it's a mating call, and the females decide which guy seems the best for producing strong young. The courting is fun to watch, since another late intruder can come in late and sweep away the ladies -- bulls herd their harems across the road -- over a hill and higher up, down the road or even into Estes Park before its pitch dark. We've even seen and heard them from our balcony thru the night at Ram's Horn. If you ever have the chance to go, I'm encouraging you. It draws crowds -- check out of state license plates -- camera set up on tripods, folks who brought lawn chairs to watch. It's nature at it's best, when the Aspen trees are golden too, golden trailing down the mountains. My husband died a couple of years ago so I haven't been back without him, but I will be going back. There is nothing quite like the majesty of nature, and that Rocky Mountain NP is the #1 most visited park in the US is not surprising. You won't forget it in autumn, in all it's glory. :) Try to take your family.
