The Council of Elrond part 2.
Aragorn is right. We cannot use it.
You have only one choice. The Ring must be destroyed.
Then what are we waiting for?
The Ring cannot be destroyed, Gimli, son of Gloin, by any craft that we here possess. The Ring was made in the fires of Mount Doom. Only there can it be unmade. It must be taken deep into Mordor and cast back into the fiery chasm from whence it came.
One of you must do this.
One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its black gates are guarded by more than just Orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep. And the great Eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland. Riddled with fire and ash and dust. The very air you breathe is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. It is folly!
Have you heard nothing Lord Elrond has said? The Ring must be destroyed!
And I suppose you think you're the one to do it?!
And if we fail, what then?! What happens when Sauron takes back what is his?!
I will be dead before I see the Ring in the hands of an Elf!
    Never trust an Elf!
Do you not understand that while we bicker amongst ourselves, Sauron's power grows?! None can escape it! You'll all be destroyed!
I will take it! I will take it! I will take the Ring to Mordor. Though, I do not know the way.
I will help you bear this burden, Frodo Baggins, as long as it is yours to bear.
If by my life or death, I can protect you, I will. You have my sword.
    And you have my bow.
    And my axe!
You carry the fate of us all little one. If this is indeed the will of the Council, then Gondor will see it done.
Mister Frodo is not goin' anywhere without me!
No indeed, it is hardly possible to separate you even when he is summoned to a secret council and you are not.
    Wait! We are coming too!
You'd have to send us home tied up in a sack to stop us!
Anyway you need people of intelligence on this sort of mission, quest, thing.
Well that rules you out Pip.
Nine companions. So be it! You shall be the Fellowship of the Ring!
    Great! Where are we going?

"I will Take the Ring to Mordor....... though..... I do not know the way..." This line is basically the perfect example of how incredible Hobbits are. Simple, yet magnificent. Frodo's will and heart demands that he take on this burden, but only then does he realize.... he has no idea how to do it or get there at all, lol Hobbits are small in stature and power, but great in spirit!

    • @palindromia130

Yes! Just imagine the horrible burden he took upon himself. A burden under which he suffers greatly. A burden that almost kills him several times! He had the opportunity to remain silent. To sit and do nothing and say nothing and return to his simple life in the shire and let someone else deal with it. But he doesn't. He takes on the burden of saving middle earth willingly. And his reward is paradise with the elves...

The Baggins are also supposedly descended from a fairy at some point prior to Bilbo's conception according to the Hobbit. Her name was Took, and whenever the Baggins did anything un-Hobbit like they were said to be acting Tookish. It's a strong hint that if Bilbo and Frodo were pure Hobbits they never would have gone on their journeys.

TheUndefeatedMagician I'd like to give Tolkien the benefit of the doubt when he said that his wartime experience and the various dictators he lived through didn't influence the evil characters of his novels. I think he just had a richly imagined (and constantly revised) vision of this world, and it didn't take a genius to put the evil guys in an ashy, poisonous hellscape.

    • @Doc_Fun
      @Doc_Fun 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

+MinecraftPro15 True enough, but he's talked about his inspirations; Christian ideology, the saga of the volsungs, beowulf, and all of these seem a far more direct impact than any form of history he witnessed firsthand. Again, it doesn't take a genius to ascribe a literal hellscape to a bad guy's realm. They did that already, it's called Hell.

It is best revealed in the conversations with Aragorn as their goodbye and in the Flashback of Faramir. Boromir was a great man. He looked out for his men, cared for his family and was both honorable in duty as he was in resolve. It was his Father's push that gave the Ring a chance to influence him. What turned him. What showed his darker side.
Also, as a side note. Boromir is the only human character there. Aragorn is of a 'magical' sub species that have roots in Elven. For as complicated as this story is, Boromir is simply human. As we all are.

@2:40 that expression on Gandalf captures so much, in just a few seconds, Ian Mckellen conveys the pain and all the complicated emotions present. You can not only just see, but feel the weight Ian Mckellen puts into just those few facial gestures, reflecting just how heavy the burden of the ring is. You can feel him caring for Frodo and feeling heavy, knowing the kind of task he is giving the Hobbit...such a powerful scene overall, never get tired of watching it.

      @MrKingYuji 9 ปีที่แล้ว +71

The music helps as well. It's not the heroic "we are going on an awesome adventure" at that moment. It's tragic and sad since Frodo will lose himself with this decision. Notice its not until Frodo gets his teammates that the music lifts, esp Aragorn and the hobbits.
Also notice when Boromir joins, the music becomes slightly more forboding and mysterious.

However, as I've gotten older I realized, this is a stealth mission. He knows all the enemy know the ring bearer is a "halfling". He sends Sam as the perfect support for Frodo and as a back up ring bearer. However, he sends Pippin and Merry as decoys. Which is exactly the parts they all played. Elrond knows whats up.

Gandalf's quiet look of pain and grief after Frodo claims the quest makes the whole scene for me. He KNOWS what Frodo has suffered, and more importantly, what he will suffer in attempting to fulfill that quest, even if Frodo doesn't.
Compare and contrast with the quiet look of bitterness and then acceptance on the face of Jimmy Stewart after being told the Bailey Building and Loan can only be saved if he permanently shelves all of his dreams by staying on as president in "It's a Wonderful Life". Two powerful moments. In the realm of the story itself, they are known only to the characters (Gandalf and George Bailey) themselves.

Its been said before but Gandalf's look after Frodo sounds I WILL TAKE IT! is heartbreaking, you can just see in his eyes begging him to reconsider, he's the nephew of one of his closest friends, the two are basically family at this point. He knows what the ring will do even to a kind heart like frodo ESPECIALLY to a kind heart yet he knows it NEEDS to be done and while everyone is shocked at Frodo's decision you can see the conviction of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli even Boromir before they pledge themselves to the quest and Gandalf's cheeky wink when Aragorn speaks to Frodo, he knows just what this means and unlike elrond never doubted Aragorn's strength. masterful scene.

I originally wanted to comment that, all memes aside, the delivery of those lines by Sean Beans is incredible. But then I got distracted by so many other things that are just amazing about this scene: The genuiene pain in Gandalfs eyes when he hears Frodo, knowing what this means for him, the world building, showcasing and demonstrating the conflict between the races, the bravery of Aragorn, volunteering himself without any hesitation while also knowing that he could never trust himself in carrying this burden, the connection between Frodo and the ring, the way that the dangers of the mission are ceemented, how the tension gets broken up by Sam, Pippin and Merry... I could go on. All in the span of 5 minutes. It's an utterly fantastic scene in what is without a doubt the greatest movie trilogy of them all.
Really, the only thing that stands out as not fantastic is the fact that, given all the gravitas and seriousness the movie and the world it's portrayed in claims, is that "Mount Doom" is honestly a pretty silly name. But I guess we can forgive Tolkien for that one.

You can see how much they admired Frodo for standing up and taking the responsiblity that no one could take. It says a lot about his character. Aragorn and Gimli's face showed how amazed they are by that act. Gandalf's face when he heard Frodo shows how amazing he is as an actor. It was pain but also relief as well. He knew the weight of carrying the ring. He knew Frodo will not be the same again. But he also knew Frodo was the only one who could take the quest.
LOTR is still the greatest movie of all time!

When Merry and Pip were running towards the group like the silly little hobbitsis they are...the look on Elrond's face was hysterical.
"DAFUQ are these little shits coming from??"

I love the part when the council starts arguing and the free peoples fighting each other can be seen reflected from the Ring. That and when Sauron whispers the black speech in the background. Really shows how the One has a mind of its own, pitting its enemies against each other, and how the Great Eye truly sees all... well, except for two hobbits on the slopes of Mt Doom. But anyway exceptionally well done from the director and visual team.

I am glad that they had Gimli attack the Ring with his axe. With everything else people complain about, you just know there would be people who don't believe Elrond about the Ring needing to be destroyed at Mt Doom if we didn't see anybody at least try to destroy it. And a Dwarf striking the Ring with his axe using all his might is about as effective as you get for an on the spot demonstration. Especially when it causes the axe head to shatter.
