Many young Croatians are leaving their country for Western Europe. Some 27% of graduates are unemployed, and more and more of them are looking for work outside Croatia's borders. Despite government efforts, the youth exodus shows no sign of slowing down. Our colleagues from France 2 report, with FRANCE 24's James Vasina.

Rex Croatorum I should have said well-paying jobs. I have many Croatian friends who wouldn't leave Croatia for love or money, but some of their children may once they leave university.

@Rex Croatorum @ I don't know who pays you for this manipulatory comments, no one leaves Croatia for not wanting to work for 1000-1500 euros, for that amount of money no one would leave, most people work for 400-500 euros in average. Besides, these (educated) people leave cause they can't find a job unless you have attachments to main political parties or are simply members of one, those people stay. Unless you're old and weak and have no other choice but to stay.

I don't feel like slave. But I was feeling like the idiot, supporting rotten and corrupted political system with my taxes. They are only trying to blind up own population with pathetic patriotism known from US. Patriotism, especially the dumb one, doesn't feed you and your family. 2-3 weeks holiday per year in Croatia is enough for saturation.

I wish people in the Balkans would be just a little bit braver and be more involved in political life like people in the west. Its not magic to why even 30 years after communism we act like we are still in communism by allowing others to think for us instead of the people running the country.

The majority of Croats that is now in Germany, Sweden or France actually moved there during the 90-ties war. Also, most of them are actually not from Croatia, but from Bosnia. The politics and climate in Bosnia make it impossible for them to return. There are cases when returners have been shot or beaten up. You come to Bosnia to build up your house during your vacation - you leave for work again - you come Back to Bosnia for your next vacation, the windows are smashed, the material stolen.

That's not quite true. The vast majority of Croats that migrated to Germany (pre EU), did so in the 60s and 70s as "Gastarbeiter". Today about half of Croats in Germany migrated there after Croatia joined the EU. In 2011 there were about 220,000 Croats living in Germany and in 2020 there were 426,000 Croats living in Germany.
