Super Bonk (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Hudson Soft's 1994 platformer for the Super NES, Super Bonk.
Super Bonk was the fourth main-line platformer produced in the Bonk series on consoles, and it was the first original console Bonk game not designed specifically for Hudson's TurboGrafx/PC Engine hardware. It follows 1993's Bonk's Big Adventure (TurboDuo/PC Engine) and it was followed by the Japanese-exclusive Chou PC Genjin 2 (Super Bonk 2) on the SNES in 1995.
By 1994 the TurboGrafx-16 was effectively dead in America and was slipping further and further behind the SNES in Japan, so it shouldn't have come as a big shock to anybody that Hudson leapt to greener pastures with Bonk 4. Still, Bonk was the Turbo's mascot, and it was strange, if not a bit sad, to see him appear on the competition's hardware. It was a bit like that unsettling feeling I had the first time I played Sonic on a non-Sega platform.
Bonk 3 wasn't quite the swansong US Turbo fans had hoped for (Bonk's Revenge was a better game), so did Hudson do right by their caveman hero when bringing him to the SNES?
I personally think so. It is a good improvement on the third game (though still not as good as the second!), and it plays well to the strengths of the SNES. Though they aren't as cheerfully bright or colorful in Super Bonk the game runs just as smooth and fast (with some fun rotation and scaling effects to boot), and the music captures the whole "stone-age meets Mario" feeling quite capably.
The most notable differences are in the stage designs and in Bonk's transformations. The game is much less linear than any Bonk game before it: each stage has multiple paths you can take to reach the boss, and it's very unlikely that you'll see every stage in the game without playing through it multiple times. The stages are just as goofy and odd as the old games, and this one really likes it "inside a dinosaur's body" themed stages.
The power-ups were my favorite addition here. Though I was never a huge fan of the tiny/giant Bonk forms from Bonk's Big Adventure, they are pretty funny this time around. Bonk can turn into... well, besides the crab, I can't really tell what his forms are specifically. One of them looks like a jailhouse crackhead, while another looks like an enormous, already-cooked chicken with Bonk's massive head perched on top. It's strange enough that it has always been able to make me laugh - creativity wasn't in short supply when it came to the humor in this one.
Super Bonk is a bit easy and its gameplay is not as polished as it was in the first two games on the Turbo were, but it was a nice breath of fresh air on the SNES, and it was a solid, incredibly personable introduction to Hudson's beloved mascot for anyone that hadn't played anything from the original trilogy. It doesn't last very long, but it sure is fun for the brief bit of time it'll take you to master it.

I thought I dreamed this game and it didn't exist because I never found nothing about it. Finally after years I know I wasn't crazy, this game felt like a fever dream though.
25years thab i looking for this game. I thought we played microbes/germ so impossible for me to found superbonk. It's just a human kid xD
Bro same. I’m only 19 but I swear I played this over a decade ago and it always lingered in the back of my mind, struggling to find any less on this game until now. My dreams were true, my fate is now in course
Oh it exists, even has a Japan only sequel.
Same, i only found it yesterday, i used to play this so much as a kid
I feel this comment with every cell of my body hahaha
I NEVER thought I’d ever come across this game again. I played this game on Singapore Airlines’ KrisWorld entertainment system in the 2000s.
I never could recall the name, or anything about it to search it up.
Like others have mentioned, this entire game felt like a fever dream. Wow!
One of the great things about this game is all the alternate paths and hidden areas through out the levels. You couldn't see everything in just one play through.
Such as a bonus room called Inside the canner , located inside the orange juice can, you must stand on top of the orange juice can, most specifically in the edge at the right of the can , then you must press jump + down (the same button combination you use for dropping from a platform)
@@goldenguest778the_real 0_0 I never knew about that! Jeez after all these years there's still stuff I haven't found yet!
How about the secret minigame on the tv at the same level
@@janmanuel4273 Oh I knew about that one.
Shame the sequel was more linear. Still an excellent game, but far too linear for it's own good.
Super Bonk never quite hits the highs of Bonk's Revenge, but it's a good improvement over Bonk's Big Adventure, and a good introduction to Hudson's mascot for anyone not familiar with the Turbografx.
This game was so damn comfy to me, and now i realize there was sequel to this too.
Played it back in 1995...I just loved the game and beautiful soundtrack.
Thanks for your video NintendoComplete, you doing excellent job for Super Adventure Island II and Super Bonk.
Thanks! I appreciate it :)
This game is super weird and I totally dig that.
One of my all-time faves! I just love Bonk! ❤️
This one's a hidden gem, for sure. This little big-headed head-bonking cave boy and his over-the-top wacky adventures in dino land. I always love eating meat and then growing HUGE with blue candy to make him BONKZILLA!! Don't deny it. That's easily the best part of this game. He just looks so _deranged!_ Don't forget about the music! The space crab theme is phenomenal.
Memories. I just get child hood feeling again. Saturday gaming as a kid. Today is Saturday as an adult.
It is the peak weirdness that made the franchise memorable
This game was so weird, nothing made sense but damn was it fun
Ótimo jogo, não entendo por que esse jogo não se popularizou.
É porque a franquia Bonk foi feita pra ser jogada no TurboGrafx/PC engine
Creio que o Mário ofuscou o jogo
This game is a classic, I still prefer the Turbografx games but this one is still very good.
Of course, also, i hate these fake flowers (the ones that turn into monster flowers when stepped/bonked on) luckily, there's a way to distinguish between a fake flower and a real one, a fake flower doesn't have the sleeping animation
I’m wondering why they haven’t put super bonk on super NES YET
Can't think of a bad Bonk game myself, I tend to like all 3 PCE/TG-16 versions, both Game Boy games (the third wasn't a traditional Bonk game), the NES port of the first Bonk, and both SNES/SFC Bonk games. Bonk CD is alright too, but was cut down from the hucard version of Bonk 3 for some reason.
this game was called super bc kid in europe. the european cover was a cropped version of the japanese one.
The 2 dislikes are clearly out of touch with original games like this that breakaway to amazing challenges and countless hours of start.
Great playthrough! Its a shame that Konami doesnt care for any Hudson properties much anymore to give them new sequels.
Thanks! I'd love to see a new one too, but I doubt it'll ever happen. Hudson was actually working on a new Bonk for PS3 and it got axed it during the takeover :(
Well, there was "Super Bomberman R", which was...OK.
@@williamsmith666 And even that bootstrapped ton of dormant or forgotten Konami IPs as Bombers... hmm.
Oh look! It's Krillin!
its krillin the vegetarian! XD
Besides NES port of 1st Bonk, there was also very good port of 1st game on Amiga called B.C Kid by Factor 5. Would love to see another Bonk game, but with how Konami is today, best we can hope for would be collection of old games or another pachinko machine.
There was also a trio of Gameboy games and an arcade game. Lots of stuff .
@@NintendoComplete how do you break the big rocks at 24:02?
@@NintendoComplete
There were even a couple mobile games.
Awesome!!
I've heard of Bonk before and played a few TG-16 games, but never his. He always reminded me of Krillin from the "Dragon Ball" series--I'm not sure what his "Jailhouse crackhead" powerup is supposed to be (he looks like a crazy old man) but this looks to be on-par with the Wario Land series for most creative and crazy transformations. The sound design in this is fantastic, it's great to hear in headphones!
push run button! XD a mini pc engine will be soon thanks Konami
such a great game. like Mario on drugs or something, so bizzare
Love that game!!
I wish there was a custom rom where I could play this on my GBA or NDS! I miss this game SO much!
Oddly I paid less for a cart only copy of the Japanese sequel online, than I paid for a cart only Super Bonk locally. Paid way less too.
OMG I'm 34 now. I played this game when I was like 8. I loooive it so much and I never remembered the name. Finally 😅😅. ❤
I loved it because wasn't Mario (hate it) Every time the baby gets smaller or bigger🎉surprise
Classic!!
Favorite bonk
Hammer geil
Krillin!!!
Krillin is that you
its krillin if he was a vegetarian
I thought it’s Krillin too. Super Bonk look exactly like Krillin
Krillin!?
No xd
King Drool, before King K Rool was a thing from the DKC series.
Ha! I reviewed this on gamefaqs too. I think this is the second best Bonk game myself though Bonk CD is really good. Makes me wonder why they never made a third Air Zonk game and went on with Bonk games.
I like Bonk 3 a bit more than the CD version as Hudson oddly cut out animations for the CD version. The CD version is still good fun, but why cut animations for the CD version when the hucard version, which has far less storage, has more animations than the CD version.
28:54 A nod to Milon.

Does anyone know if this was on TURBO GRAFX16? I had the console and BONKS ADVENTURE But I don't know if this one was an available game.
Muy buen juego
Oh, okay...
Omi Shaoling Duel is Bomks
Not a lot of food options,is there?
I played this game in the Japanese version on a snes station emulator for ps2
Should be called SFC Genjin in Japan.
It's probably called Super Genjin , because there's a Japan-only game called Super Genjin 2
@@goldenguest778the_real It is indeed Super Genjin in Japan.
T. I..t. Ty bonk bonk
Krillin before the events of Dragonball.
I didn´t know there was a bonk for snes
There were 2, actually! The second was Japanese-only, though.
Super Bonk 2 is like having Translation since I watch that long time ago.
@@elalexander3416 I'm waiting for the full translation, also according to your profile photo, you are a Bonk fan , i wonder what Chikkun/Hatchet looks like without the eggshell helmet
@@goldenguest778the_real Yeah I love all Hatchets because they're cute when they dress like that. And as for Hachet/Chikkun Bosses in Super Bonk 2 they look awesome.
@@goldenguest778the_real When I was a kid starting to like Hatchets/Chikkun. I just really a fan of them.
he missed something in the lava at 7:20 I think you need to be invulnerable to jump in
That ending 🤣🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭😭😭
How is there a tree on a cloud?
Trees need water to live, and clouds have water on them
what about super genjin 2 tho
Cute
Wonder why there was never a Mega Drive/Genesis Bonk game, be it unique or a port of one of the extant games?
Hudson never really developed games for a Sega console until the Saturn. The only Hudson game on the Genesis, Mega Bomberman, was actually ported over by Westone. Unless Westone would've done one, you would've never seen one either. Hudson had the PC Engine, but was still on good terms with Nintendo at that time.
*clap.👏 Yay good game
Best part 1:12:19
What is this art style called? I know it isn't just manga or anime
BDA Kelly's on ttVVVVghj (SNES)

Nah
Does anyone else really want to love this game but think there's just too much going on with the main character?? Like all the different things he can morph into or whatever is just too overwhelming to me.
One of the games I have horrible memories of from my childhood, f this game
Se parece a krilin siempre le decia krilin a ese personaje
Baby saitama

Jogo mó estranho kkkkkk já joguei e achava que era o cailou cabeçudo

I liked the TurboGraphx-16 version better....sorry.
There is no TG-16 version of this game, those were prequels, this one is SNES/SFC exlusive.
Nostalgia...
