  • A playthrough of NEC's 1991 mascot platformer for the TurboGrafx-16, Bonk's Revenge.
    The 1990 game Bonk's Adventure ( • Bonk's Adventure (Turb... ) was the game that gave the TurboGrafx-16 its identity in the days of the 16-bit console wars. It wasn't quite a Mario or Sonic-killer, but it was a well-made platformer with a quirky and memorable personality.
    The follow-up came a year later, and Bonk's Revenge was everything that fans of the original could've hoped for.
    The stages are much larger and more open-ended than they were last time, and there are several bonus stages to be found tucked away in out-of-the-way corners. You can power-up by eating random chunks of meat, fly around and explore if you find flower to mount on your head, wall jump a la Ninja Gaiden by whacking your head on stone walls, climb up sheer surfaces with your teeth, and swim up waterfalls. It's also much more difficult a game than Bonk's Adventure was, which will be a relief to anyone that thought the first game was way too easy to blow through. The gameplay is similar, but the added complexity helped to bring the game rather nicely in-line with Nintendo and Sega's 1991 headliners.
    The same can be said for the presentation. The world of Bonk's Revenge is a far more colorful and better realized one than that of its predecessor's, and the enemy design is top-notch. I love how the opening stages feature enemies just hanging out and doing their thing: they chase after bugs, take naps, and go fishing, and many of them will leave you alone if you don't bother them. What a cool touch! This attention to detail and the huge diversity in the environments lend the game the feel of a Saturday morning cartoon, and it's a real joy to play through each of the seven worlds because of it. The fantastic soundtrack doesn't hurt, either.
    The TurboGrafx-16 brand never enjoyed the recognition and praise that was heaped on its competitors in the west, and the Bonk name has never carried the prestige and the popularity of Mario and Sonic, but there's no sense of corporate cynicism to be found in Bonk's Revenge. It's a firm reminder that a game doesn't have to be popular to be good, and it's a beautiful example of just how special a game can be when a team pours such care and heart into their work.
    Red, Hudson, you did some amazing work here. Thank you!

    He may have not been an icon to rival the likes of Sonic and Mario, but that doesn't get in the way of Bonk's Revenge being one of my favorite platformers from the 16-bit era.

      the turbografx - 16 was an 8 bit system.. it only had an overclocked processor and a little more ram... i think

      I'd put Bonk up there with Mario and Sonic, hell I still prefer the Bonk games over the Sonic games. Still have my Wii with all 3 TG-16 games on it, both Game Boy games, both SNES/SFC games, and the NES one as well.

      The SOUND on this thing is Amazingly good. For it's time, I was impressed. It surpassed Nintendo and Sega. I think that's what made it stand out.

      @@nickthefox1998 Yeah but the sound was way better than Nintendo and Sega. Not the greatest graphics but the sound was amazingly sharp to be put on a credit card looking game. I still have my game cards for this system.

    I loved this game as a kid, but watching that intro now pretty much sums up the game. Remember Bonk? We added missiles.

    Never knew a sequel could be such a good favorite of mine. As a matter of fact, It's my kind of game to play whenever I need to chill.
    This game makes me comfy.

    Oh, I just adore the Bonk a.k.a. PC Genjin series. This was one of the first things that really fascinated me way back when the Wii Virtual Console was announced. Having never owned a Turbografx-16, and having never heard of Bonk before, I thought the cartoony aesthetic looked really cool and couldn't wait to play it. Good times! This really brings me back to the blissful Wii era and adolescence, playing classics like this and Cave Story for the first time.

    The amount of different sprites Bonk has is very impressive and lend him far more personality than Mario or Sonic had in the 16-bit era. I've always been under the impression that despite the Neo-Geo and TurboGrafx-16 never becoming very successful here in the States that they're _cooler_ in some ways than the Genesis/SNES offerings when I see games like this and _Air Zonk!_ .

    The music and sound effects sound like 8 bit software was used. I thought the TurboGraphix 16 was supposed to be a 16 bit console.

    • @arfarfarf256
      @arfarfarf256 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was kinda in between the 8 and 16 bit eras.

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The way a console produces sound isn't related to how many bits it was. The Virtual Boy was 32-bit and sounded similar to this. The Turbo's sound was PSG but it was way more advanced than what could be done on the NES and SMS.
