This episode is so nostalgic to me. I used to sell Pan de Sal when I was 8 years old. Waking up 4:00 am every day, a quick bath and a fast paddling to the bakeshop with my bicycle. We stack the breads in a makeshift backpack made out of cartoon box as the body and a strap made of a good old shirt. A good shout of "PAAAAN DE SAAAAAL!" is a wake up call for everyone that it is already breakfast while riding my bike. A piece of pan de sal costs 2 Pesos (merely $.02) and sometimes I can sell 50 to 100 pieces every morning (just do the math here 🤣). I got a share of 40 Pesos or $1 after a 3 hours of work before heading to school. That was my life for 4 years before I entered highschool. I am now graduating with Bachelor of Science in Accountancy degree. Thank you for doing this episode! Subscribing to your channel is never a bad idea!

But yes it is incredible how we share so much across the world, in our different countries and cultures. We share more, than we have differences, and differences dont have to be a negative, they can be celebrated, rather than divide us :) imho.

Be educated with this trivia. UBE PAn de Sal was invented in 2019!!!! That is Fakeness in a bun! That is an Instagram Food and only Vloggers who want to get more Filipino subscribers glorify this bread as Cultural item. This should also teach you that so much of Filipino food presented online is a MYTH and the Filipinos in the comment section who are so proud, they never ate bacon or know what is a bagel or croissant.

    • @DannyF249
      @DannyF249 4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

@@eduardochavacano Culture evolves over time so just because it started being popular in 2019 in the Philippines does not make it any less part of their culture. I have had bagels and croissants but so what if most Filipinos don't? What was the point of that statement? You speak with an air of condescension which is quite off-putting and makes me think you have not learned much about other cultures, not even your own.

I can't believe that she hasn't tasted pandesal ever but she made a perfect one. Here in the Philippines, we ordinary Filipinos don't even know how to make it(since every bakery here sells it so why bother making haha). But Emmy just showed how amazing her baking skills are. She even made an on point research and that's what made her different from other content creator, she do some research for the authenticity of the food. You're the best Emmy.

i know how to make pandesal, but I don't make it every single day because yes its simple to make but it takes a lot of work not to mention the dishes you need to wash after making this hahahaha. BUT it's so nice when you see them rise, cook, and then take them out of the oven and the smell of your house is soooo nice that your neighbor would say "wow ang bango ng tinapay".

Emmy: I know you should let bread cool before you eat-
Me: don’t worry, pandesal is best eaten when it’s warm and fresh from the oven.
Also pandesal is Filipino thing but it was influenced by the spaniards during the spanish colonization, hence the name Pan de Sal or salted bread. It’s not supposed to be salty, you know just lightly salted like a pinch before baking.

    This trigger's our(Filipinos) memories
I remember waking up early in the morning just to get some warm Pandesal across the street with my Lola, or when I wake up I ask my mom for 20 ₱esos and depending where I am, (near the city or in the bukid/farmlands) Pandesal can either cost ₱5(near the city) or ₱2(in the bukid/farmlands) and that alone is surprisingly cheaper than coffee or Milo which can cost from ₱8-₱12, so that's my nostalgia story and boy is it so good to have Pandesal in the morning

I just made this recipe last night and my entire family thoroughly enjoyed it! It was gone by morning!
We didn't have instant yeast, so I substituted it for equal parts active dry yeast (I dissolved it in warm water first according to package instructions before adding it to my wet ingredients)
The dough came out more wet than what you showed in the video, so I ended up adding 1-2 tablespoons of AP flour, and kneading it much longer (I ended up kneading 30-40 minutes before it became not sticky).
But overall an extremely pleasant experience! I have tried to make a brioche loaf, and japanese milk bread before but something was always missing and they didn't turn out quite right. This was my first fully successful bread-making experience and I'm excited to make pandesal again :))

In the Philippines, Pan de Manila and Julie's are two of the many bread and pastries stores that sell the freshest pandesal. I remember staying with my grandparents and every 6 am, a Julie's tricycle would roll up near the house and I would urge my father to buy loads of bread, especially pandesal.

I was a yeast bread that she would bake into little round loaves and she topped them with cinnamon and sugar so it was basically a dessert for after dinner rather than to be eaten with dinner.

He would wake up early and buy the pandesal in the bakery and slice it in half put margarine and sugar on top and put it in the oven long enough to make it a bit more toasted. My dad and grandparents would partner it with coffee while as for me I partnered it with a chocolate drink.

Unaurprisingly, they constantly sell out of pandesal but when we do get a bag full, I remember our breakfast having the pandesal we bought and later cookes some pancit (Filipino noodles), eggs, and other protein to go along side the pandesal. The original pandesal is best eaten when hot. I still go to the same bakeshop where we used to buy them while hot in a paper bag with the aroma that your will love and never forget. Either dip it in your coffee to eat or put cheddar cheese. In the Philippines, my earliest childhood memory was to put Reno Liverspread or coconut jam. Such an unforgetable classic taste when we were young. Until now, we still crave for it.

I live in Goa which is a small state in India. We have Portuguese inspired bread here as well and it's a staple in most Goan homes. From what I've read, when the Portuguese first came here, they didn't get yeast along with them and needed their bread. So they used the next best thing which was palm wine or as we call it, TODDY. However in recent times toddy tappers and toddy is a bit expensive and not so easy to come by and the demand for pão is high so they've switched over completely to bakers yeast.

It even served as an energy bread for me whenever I eat it with milo with a rainy weather and I often hear the vendor with a fresh shout of "PANDE--SAALLLLL" throughout our neighborhood at 6 AM. I just miss those times and I wanna return back to my childhood days.

I spent a heavenly week in Davao with my wife and her family. We had pandesal every morning with coffee from her mom's plantation. One day Mama made a mix of coconut wine and coffee for me. Delicious. I love Ube. I have had Ube ice cream, Ube spread, and several different but delicious Ube baked goods. I love my Pinay Wife!

I’ve tried lots of different pandesal recipes and find yours the most easy and less time consuming and taste really good. I am sticking with this recipe from now on. Thank you.

Kia Ora Emmy! Thank you for the wholesome content! I'd love to see you tackle some recipes from the "Edmond's Cook Book". It's a staple in New Zealand households, and has some kiwi spins on classics, and some classics which are strictly kiwi :)

My grandma always brings pandesal when she comes up from Texas, and she’d always put butter on it for breakfast so this just brings back all the memories

The name comes from the Spanish word meaning “salt bread" and it originated during the 16th century Spanish colonial era in the Philippines.

She did not mention who the colonizers were but the other info you share is already givenat the beginning of the video

No, the term “pandesal” is the shortened version of “pan de almusal,” which translates to “breakfast bread”

jerryboi511 you’re kidding right? You might want to check Wikipedia and Google Translate? Or simple Google it.

Hey Emmy! I've been watching you for roughly 6.5 years now. My first videos I watched were the poppin cooking sets waaay back then lol. I love watching your videos. They are calm and a bit goofy at times and I love your peppy yet focused attitude.
Anyways, I think you should try to make Jalebi! Jalebi is an indian crispy funnel cake that is soaked in a rose water and cardamom syrup. (And maybe even carrot halwa!)

I like my pan de sal's top crust burnt and crunchy. It is also delicious when dipped in coffee.
