Actually most H.K. people understand Mandarin and they can speak it quite well with or even without accent. But people who H.K. people who were born and raised there are proud of being Cantonese speakers (comparing themselves to those people who move to H.K. from Mainland China) They would prefer you speak to them in English other than Mandarin if you don't know any Cantonese ;)
Cantonese and English are both very welcomed 🤘. As a local, I am very proud of my Cantonese. Mandarin is not our mother tougue and are mainly spoken by new immigrants.
I am from HK. Local school did not teach Mandarin before 1997, they can understand Mandarin but cannot speak well, people who born after 2000s have mandarin class since their primary school, normally they can listen and speak Mandarin well.
I like how conversational your delivery is. Makes the viewer feels like talking to a friend who recently went to hongkong. Not pretentious. Great vlog!!!!!
Your videos are the ultimate best. I have watched you do 3 countries so far...love your content...and your little girl is adorable too. You are a great poppa.
Which is a good hotel for stay during stop over & one which isn't very costly but absolutely neat & clean for stay of say 5/6 hours, with anytime check-in & check-out being allowed for refreshing etc.?
Your videos are very fun and informative! I first discovered your channel after watching your Japan travel tips, since I will be going this Spring! ^^ I subscribed after watching the Vegas ones, cause I love Vegas LOL. Your videos remind me of Andrew Zimmern's style! You deff deserve more subscribers! I notice a lot of the research and effort you put into them.
I like what you did with tip #4! Those are some great tips! I'll keep these in mind in the future as I would like to check out Hong Kong in the future.
I love the Cantonese cuisine and the hustle and bustle of the high-rise-dominated metropolitan feel of Hong Kong, but I’m completely averse to the insufferable humidity. Thanks for the great video.
Hi Chris; I’ll be going to Bangkok in September 2024 transiting through Hong Kong. On my way back to LAX, I have a 14 hr over in Hong Kong. Am I able to leave the airport, explore the city for a few hours and come back? Are you familiar with any of that, in terms of having to take our luggage with us or if there’s a baggage service we can leave it with. Departing flight to LAX is at 8pm so I’m sure we’ll want to be back around 4pm so to get some lounge time in 😎 Thanks Chris!
Hi DelhiBelly -- the good news is HKG airport is a really short train ride in to the city center on the high speed airport train. If you're actually on a connecting flight you shouldn't have to pickup and recheck your bags. If you're 2 different carriers then check the carrier from HKG to LAX -- Some allow check in of luggage any time the same day.
For American travelers, the advance airport baggage checkin in Central does not work for flights to the US. Alas, the luggage must be carried/dragged to the airport. This restriction is not a big deal unless you to check out from the hotel but have a night flight.
Good question! Because I get that question so often, I created a frequently asked question video to answer it: th-cam.com/video/Vf5GHG7QXaI/w-d-xo.html Check out question #5
Milk tea is special cuz they use a filter similar to a ladies stockings. With very small holes filtering all the impurities. The good descriptions by Nick we not very complete lol but anyway great video!
Your introduction is absolutely accurate and so funny 😆 , please don’t mention Hong Kong so many times 😂 We won’t miss that , besides a busy and noisy part in here , we got nice nature as well, seaside ....
Taking the airport express (train) from airport to downtown actually isn't a good idea. It's pricey, boring, and probably won't take you directly to where you want to go. (Chances are, your hotel won't be located close to Tsing Yi, Kowloon or HK stations, which are not popular tourist districts) In fact, HK boasts a really good airbus service and network. By taking a bus, you save up to 60% (compare a $100 train ticket with a $40 bus fare from airport to Central) and it can probably take you directly to the doorstep of your hotel! Plus, you'll get to see the amazing views of the city and the magnificent Tsing Ma Bridge along the way (do remember to ride it on the upper deck), which is priceless!
5:18 The MTR didn't run the double-decker bus, they only run shuttle bus to/from MTR stations. Buses in Hong Kong are mainly run by CTB (Citybus), KMB (Kowloon Motor Bus) and NWFB(New World First Bus).
Hong Kong translate into "Fragrant Port". When I vacationed there, the tour guide said it got its name because it was famous for selling fragrancies/perfumes at one point in time. (I have not verified that info independently.)
That's good to know that English is still the second official language after Cantonese. So when I visit Hong Kong in the next year. I should be okay with speaking in English then? Although I have a Northern Ireland accent.
@@tfzoofss Thanks for the information. I will arrange for hotel to do some translations into Cantonese although I will try and practice to say "Yes, No, Please and Thank You and Sorry" in Cantonese as I like to make an effort and at least try and say a few words even if my ability is poor.
Correction: it wasn't "taken over by China" in 1997. It was RETURNED to China after the British took it from China after China lost a fight with the British over illegally importing Opium into China.

Really? Most friends of mine who live in HK can not speak Mandarin fluently. Please compare it with the the degree of speaking Cantonese and English

We checked our bags on United to the US from the Central Station city check in no problem
We were told about the restriction last June. Maybe that restriction has been loosened since then.

My tip is not to take MTR to city from airport, take a bus or taxi. MTR wastes lots of time. Trust me , I live in HK.
For number 4, usually are the old buildings .So mainly the building have the fourth floor.

Why didn’t you mention minibuses when talking about public transportation in Hong Kong?
I just didnt think the minibusses are easy for tourists
very nice.
IFC Mall is right above Hong Kong Station, rather than Central Station. Two stations are connected with a underground tunnel in paid area.
