I spent a little over 10 years living in Hong Kong and I am going to add a few things to the list and sort of “fix” a few things that aren’t really true. 1) Bug sprays. You only need it in the summer or when you are going to places with trees and other vegetation (like mountains, parks...) The mosquitos are dead in the winter and not usually found in the city center. 2) Sharing tables in restaurants. You don’t usually share tables unless it’s a cheap cheap place or in a big Chinese dim sum restaurant during peak hours on the weekend. Nobody likes to share a table with strangers and the restaurants know that very well. 3) Washing your eating utensils. That’s also only true in cheaper Chinese restaurants. Most restaurants you find in the mall or any restaurants other than Chinese do not have this “wash your own” practice. 4) Tipping. Depends on what kind of place you are in. High end restaurants almost always require tipping. Many moderately priced restaurants also have this fee called “+10% service fee” which is basically tip. When you arrive at your hotel and an employee helps you carry your luggage... you also need to tip. They probably won’t kill you if you don’t tip, but it’s generally expected. 5) Rude people. Again, it depends. I do find Hong Kongers in general to be more stressed and as a result appear “rude.” Many people are very polite and will gladly help you when you need help with directions. Talk to them politely and they will do the same in return 90% of the time. 6) Traffic. I find the drivers in Hong Kong pretty good. I mean they drive around all day in narrow streets packed with cars... that takes skills. Always look around before crossing the street is a good tip nonetheless. When you cross the street in the US, you also have cars turning. But in Hong Kong, traffic for all cars stop when the light turns green for pedestrians. I find that even safer. And something I would add is... Avoid going there in the summer. Seriously it’s the worst time of the year as it’s super hot and humid. You are wet the moment you step outside. Everywhere you go smells like your uncle’s sweat. Summer also means Summer vocation for the kids. All the attractions in Hong Kong is filled with kids on vocation. Oh and did I mention the mosquitos in the summer? Go visit during Spring, Fall (Autumn) or Winter. You can thank me later. Nice video btw. Glad you enjoyed your time there.
Seriously do not visit in summer! October to February is best or prepare to spend you holiday inside air-conditioned malls. I think the washing your own utensils with tea thing specifically only applies to dim sum restaurants which seem to be a HK tradition. When I ask people from northern China they think its weird washing your spoons with tea. Seem like a Cantonese thing.
Delia, I can't tell you how grateful me and my husband are to you. We took your advice regarding the octopus card and food (esp cheese tarts) to heart. Our trip to Hong Kong was amazing and we enjoyed it a lot, in part thanks to your very informative videos. Thank you for all that you do for your viewers. We are indeed very grateful.

When I first traveled to HK, I also felt that vibe that the people there are quite unfriendly but of course not all of them. One time my kid fell asleep and I had to carry her even inside the elevator. while at the elevator, a lady (HK local) noticed that my daughter's back is showing because the shirt was pulled up from the way I carried her, she quietly pulled it down so I don't have to worry fixing it. I thanked her and smiled at her as a gesture that I really appreciate it. From then on, I realized that we just need to be on our best behavior as a tourist so that people won't get mad because they are just being real.
You don't have to go to Sham shui Po for the sim card, you can get those sim cards in any of the convenient stores and newspaper stands around Hong Kong. Most resto have tissues, if they don't have it you can always buy a pack for HK$2 at the cashier. Mosquitoes are only around the woods or dirty places so depends where you go and most importantly, we TIP people here, only cheapos don't tip people.
Can I ask you one question as you are the hkese, so we just go up to any convenient store and ask to buy a sim card with data, is it easy to set up or can we just ask the owner to do it?
MultiFiq it's easy enough to set up should just have to put it in and maybe disable and reenable data. There might be a USSD code you need to type in on the dialer to activate it. There are full instructions in English with the SIM and yes most clerks will help even in 7/11, mine did, you can get the SIM anywhere it's very easy, one of the easier countries in Asia to get it up and running.
Yes convenient store sell sim cards but they are more expensive and have much less data and/or talking minutes. In SSP i paid $88 for 5GB for 1 months before (July 2017).... you can't get that in convenient stores I live in the middle of Kowloon on Arygle Street close to the Kowloon Hospital.... far away from woods or dirty places, i have a mosquitoes problem
Just got back from HK today.... extremely accurate video....all I would add of a tourist ask for a 3 day tourist card (not octopus card) gets you return airport express card and 3 days travel...then just top up as you go. Remember to return it at airport when leave and get deposit back....HK is the best....
Thanks for the tips! Went to HK the first time and I have got to say, I didn't encounter rude people but actually helpful people. I experienced something horrible in there but people helped me and I am so thankful for that. I am going back in about 2 months. Love HK because my roots are from there. This time is going to be unforgetable, becausse I am finally travelling with my family instead of by myself. Another tip you could add for travellers is to bring a universal converter for your electronics (different voltage 220/110). Keep up the good vids!
Everyone needs their own Octopus card. You can't use the same card for multiple people because there is a lock preventing multiple transactions at the same time.
Raquel Pacis she will very much likely need her own octopus card but she can get a child version which she will only pay child fares for transports (a lot cheaper). But if she’s not taking a seat (say you’re gonna hand held her during the journey then the answer is no)
Hi, Delia. Thank you for your information! Especially the information about SIM card should be really helpful for me for my next stay in hk. When I visit hk previous time, “In town check-in” was super convenient. I hope this system should be introduced in any other countries. Someday visit Tokyo, try some experience here and post a movie about it :) Anyway COVID-19 still doesn’t settle down so just be careful and stay safe!! Kei from Tokyo.
I am a frequent traveller to HK and would just like to say that these pieces of advice are spot-on. I especially like that she recommends the in town check-in at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations. Great when you check out of your hotel mid-morning but have a late night/early morning departure. Check in your bags and enjoy a last unencumbered day around town
If you go to the MTR counter at the airport, armed with your passport, you can get the tourist version of the Octapas which does not require a deposit and it includes a return Airport Train Express ticket and three days of MTR trips.
You can get the china mobile data card from 711 and circle K. No need to go all the way to Shum Sui Po (SSP) for that. SSP is worth to go for shopping if you r looking for cheap toys , computer or gadgets.
I have four days until I travel to Hong Kong! I'm so excited and knowing about the Optimus card is a great help for me to get around =) Thank you for creating this video!
When I went to Hong Kong 5 years ago I did not see any bugs at all, also it never rained and every toilet has paper. I guess it depends what season you go 😊
The restrooms might have toilet paper but they are tiny and not the cleanest. For us guys, I just need a hole to piss. For ladies, use at hotel or inside the mall.
I live in HK and this video is totally correct and accurate. The only thing I disagree with is that I haven't found any bathrooms that don't have toilet paper (well except for at some parks). Actually the public bathrooms are quite nice in malls much better than the US.
OMG this video drove me CRAZY when you began talking about the FOOD!!!!! I LOVE dim sum and dumplings, and the Hong Kong-style of Cantonese/Chinese cooking in general - we eat a lot of it in New York City's Chinatown - and it's SO GOOD!!! I'm going to HK tomorrow from London, so am so happy I watched this video. I had not thought of bringing an umbrella or bug spray - yikes, thanks for that. Can't wait to do the street food thing!!!!
I am permanently resedant in Hong konger, i live in Fanling Hong Kong I love the Buddhism monestery in sha tin. I go there every sataday for a long walk and fresh air. I use CMHK SIM card for 15G for 200HKD.
you don't need bug spray. been keeping a home here for 8 years. Just go to any watson or manning and buy a "mosquito" band. Its a wristband and it works. Some also sell patches you just wear
Some tips (but not a complete list): Use Google Maps to navigate directions, use Open Rice to find local restaurants, buy an Octopus card (upon arrival in the airport) to pay for all transportation & buy stuffs from local convenience stores, buy a local SIM card with data to use your apps on your phone (Get the SIM from a local CSL store, or other mobile stores). Maybe there are still a few more items, but this will let you last a couple of days in Hong Kong.
Hello Delia, Thanks for making this vidoe. It has all the necessary information for first time visitor like me. I only stayed in HK twice both times near the Airport for flight back to LA. Your video has great info and I have watched it 3 times already. Now I am watching your other video about the food to eat.
MY friend l ! GREAT JOB Delia ! You need nobody to inspire you ! ... YOU ALREADY GREAT ! YOUR TH-cam CHANNEL IS GREAT !!! JUST KEEP GOING !!!! BELIEVE IN YOURSELF MORE !!! and thanks for your video

The tipping thing isn’t wrong, it’s just that most restaurants have a thing called a ‘10% service charge’ where it’s normally calculated for you on the receipt, but not the menu. If you do want to tip more, generally, we leave change on the tab after we pay, then that would be considered the tip. Not a lot of people tip in cheaper restaurants though, so don’t feel like you have to, the service charge already covers that.
Hongkong airport express is definitely most fastest and convenient way to get to the airport, why? 1) you can check in your luggage in advance( mostly same day, please check with the customer services at hongkong mtr station) 2) you can choose to check in at hongkong mtr station; ( save time ) 3) It's indeed the fastest way to travel to Hk airport. ( less than 30 min)
you didn't mention the $2.50HK tram ride? cheapest public transport in Hong Kong. or trying the snake soup. that was yummy or as you say in Cantonese "hou may"
Im moving to Hong Kong in two weeks and this was so helpful!! I'm also definitely going to check out your top 11 things to eat video and hopefully eat my way through the city ❤️
Hi Delia, we just came back from HK, we stayed in North Point area. Though, it seems like a lot of things happening in HK recently, i just want to tell you and everyone that as a family traveller, we really enjoy our time there. But i remember in this video that you did mention about all the attitude from the aunty and uncles 😅. I experience it first hand, but i just keep myself cool since i already know it from this video. Thanks for sharing. Love from us 👨👩👧👦❤️

Don’t go to Hong Kong in Summer ( Jul ~ Sep), it’s super humid and hot, not to mention the typhoon. It will ruin ur trip. Seriously. Don’t go in Summer. But in Spring ( Feb ~ April, except Lunar New Year) and Autumn ( Oct ~ Nov), the best time.
OMG I'm heading there soon and this is like SO helpful (esp the octopus, simcards, napkins etc) I couldn't thank you enough! //virtual hug Subscribed and checking out your other vids soon~ ps: you're so pretty!
Nice video but here are my comments. She neglected to mention that Octopus card can also be used on all HK buses, which sometimes are better options than MTR. You seriously don't want to roll your luggage from Central to Hong Kong station because it's a long hike and is always jammed with people. MTR is convenient but sometimes getting to HK or Kowloon station where you can check in is not quite straightforward. You may need to change lines more than once and it involves lots of walking and elevator use (large luggage is banned on escalators). You mostly won't have a seat until you get to the airport express line. I would recommend downloading the KMB app and see if there is a direct airport express bus going to the airport from where you are. Cost is less than half of the MTR and you are almost guaranteed a seat if you happen to get on at a terminus station. Put your bags on the luggage rack and you can sit back and enjoy the ride. As for SIM card, T-mobile users can now use their LTE data and roam free in HK. Your LTE data used is charged against the amount you have on your plan. So no need to buy local cards.
Correct. If one is traveling with several people (say a family of four) it may actually be cheaper to take a taxi to the airport than wrestle all your luggage to the MTR.
Airport Express - HK$100 for "most efficient, cleanest most convienent thing ever" with free early baggage check in isn't really expensive. For comparision a taxi is about HK$240 and a bus is around $40. Apart from this - great video with lots of useful information.
Your video was on my recommendations, do you have Hong Kong background by any chance? Bc your Canto sounded very good. Also watched your HK recap, damn makes me miss HK so much.

yes, i agree with you to the points that some HK people can be very rude sometimes, and car on the road is aggressive. One thing i want to point out is the way they serve the food, i mean they make so much noise while putting plate or bowl on the table to serve the customers. In my country, it's really rude to do so, but in HK, it's just like that, i know:D
I don't call it rude for putting plates noisily if it's not aim at the person. You can say it's a cultural difference and Hongkongers always try to do things efficiently. No offense, I think it may not always be appropriate if you expect people here to adhere to the norm in your country.
But i live in hk why am i watching this
lmfao! thanks for making me choke on my food 😂😂

Ting Ng She probably picked up some Cantonese from her parents.
I think so.
Yah
Cantonese is a dying language. Learn Mandarin
you don't need bug spray. been keeping a home here for 8 years.
Useful guide. The last time I went to HK was 30 years ago. Wouldn't mind paying it another visit to see how it's changed.

Great vid, going to HK next week after 8 years away when I lived on the gold coast. Thank you beautiful!
About to go to Hong Kong for the first time next month. This was very insightful. Thank you!
Hongkong airport express is definitely most fastest and convenient way to get to the airport, why?
1) you can check in your luggage in advance( mostly same day, please check with the customer services at hongkong mtr station)
2) you can choose to check in at hongkong mtr station; ( save time )
3) It's indeed the fastest way to travel to Hk airport. ( less than 30 min)
Hong Kong has been on my bucket list for SO long! Thanks for the insight!
you're so welcome! hope you enjoy :)
Omg I love the mtr it’s grate
Clean
Quiet
Fast
Easy to use as a traveler
im going to hk alone for the first time for 5 days in 5 month and i am a little nervous so thank you for this :)
Really great info !! Planning a trip to HK and this was helpful thanks !!
you didn't mention the $2.50HK tram ride?
cheapest public transport in Hong Kong.
or trying the snake soup.
that was yummy or as you say in Cantonese "hou may"
Collin Ratcliff or the ferries to the different islands
Love from us 👨👩👧👦❤️
Thank you for the tip I will be going to hongkong this April I am excited to eat foods.

Great video, I really enjoyed listening to your tips!
Wow! The tips you gave are ON-POINT! We just started our TH-cam channel about Hong Kong. And your vid is such a great reference point.
Thanks for this vlog. :) very useful. I'll go to HK at the end this year. Keep it up! Stay pretty!
OMG I'm heading there soon and this is like SO helpful (esp the octopus, simcards, napkins etc) I couldn't thank you enough! //virtual hug
Subscribed and checking out your other vids soon~
ps: you're so pretty!
You should go to Hong Kong in autumn. Weather is not as hot, and so no bugs
Correct. If one is traveling with several people (say a family of four) it may actually be cheaper to take a taxi to the airport than wrestle all your luggage to the MTR.
great video!!! thank you very much! This is very helpful
Good tips Deliaaaaa i needed this
The octopus card can take any transportation, including ferry, bus and some of the taxi as well
You can also use your the octopus card at McDonald’s KFC Pizza Hut and watch movies at most cinemas
i'm going to hongkong in less than two months, this was helpful thanksss!

Well presented video. Thanks for the useful information.
Why am I watching this! Hahaha. I like your videos a lot!
hahah thank you!
For me, the best mobile sim card was from Sun Mobile 30 days and 15GB data for 106 HKDollars (as of Dec 2018)
Airport Express - HK$100 for "most efficient, cleanest most convienent thing ever" with free early baggage check in isn't really expensive. For comparision a taxi is about HK$240 and a bus is around $40. Apart from this - great video with lots of useful information.
Depends on where you're going to the airport from too :)
Your video was on my recommendations, do you have Hong Kong background by any chance? Bc your Canto sounded very good.

Can you use the Octopus card when you're going to ride the free shuttle bus K1?
I miss HK! The tourism board are doing a huge youtuber thing in January!!
yes, i agree with you to the points that some HK people can be very rude sometimes, and car on the road is aggressive.
Having fun!
