I lived in umeå for almost 10 years and moved away from there last year, this video made me smile and cry a little remembering several of those trips I had taken along this path. Although i have a video in summer months of the path, i do not have one in winter. Thanks a million for sharing :-)
Very nice video. I wish I was there, on this nice white day of real winter riding a bike through Umeå. I agree winter is no real reason not to ride a (motor)bike. Many Germans and even Russians (!) agree you shouldn't ride anything on two wheels, either with or without an engine, in full-fledged winter. But I feel it's bullshit. Those people are either too timid or too addicted to physical comfort. You say it, Scandinavia essentially proves you can ride bikes (and motorbikes, for that matter, but bikes are obviously way more ecological) throughout any winter. And so do I. I live in Germany, though, but bikes have been my "car", "bus" and "commuter train" since my teenage years. And the only way to make me use something else within one-digit kilometre numbers is weather that _actually_ makes biking difficult and agonising. Which means: heavy rain, storm or both at a time. Without that, I would ride it in any subzero temperatures, although, admittedly, I would need a "burglar's mask" made of a wool cap to avoid facial frostbites at a certain point. P.S.: Umeå reminds me of the town (not really city) in southwest Germany where I studied translation. The town itself is a typical provincial district capital, nothing special, there are many towns of the kind. But it harbours one of the few high education institutions in Germany specialising on translation science :)
