    Katana, I played all three but the katana sounds so freaking good, at this point it wins on all fronts, the 100 is the best the 50 is also great but the 100 has it beat. It's all in your own ears, hands and of course your choice of guitar as well too. You will not be disappointed in the katana 100!

  • @TVLTNT
    @TVLTNT 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    The Boss Katana wins hands down in this one. Anyone that knows me also know's that I'm a Fender amp guy but sorry Fender really messed up somewhere when them made this new version Mustang edition. The old Fender Mustang amp models were way better. The Peavy Vypyr still does kill both of these amps. ROCK ON HARLEY PEAVEY!!!!

    • @PrestonSmithsMusic
      @PrestonSmithsMusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well said. However, I must ask, what is it about the Vyper that you like? I used one for while (set up for a friend), yet I remained a fan of my actual glass tube amp. I was impressed with it's modelling, but it's just modelling. Note: If its sounds good, go with it. Just curious. Some folks are pretty strict about that kind of thing (Tube vs modelling). Personally, I didn't find the modelling as good as I had hoped (good, but could be better). Katana impressed me. If only for the price point.

    • @TVLTNT
      @TVLTNT 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My 1st Vypyr is the 120 TUBE Amp it has 4 6L6's and a 12Ax7 in it with the rest being Peavey's Transtube. My other Peavey Vypyr is the VIP 2 Vypyr. Again they work best when you have the Sanpera I or II pedals that are made for these type of modeling amps. So basically both amps just do work well and sound great as I feel they are intended to be. However, even though they have special effects built into them, I still indeed use and rely on many, many pedals to still help round out the sound shaping I'm after instead of using what are built into the 2 different Vypyr Amp models. In any event they do work perfectly for me and I would still choose them over the Katana, and the Mustang, as well as a Line 6 Spider type modeling amp. As well as many others that I've heard that are out there. I would have bought a new Peavey Mace or a Peavey Duece amp if they still were making them but instead I first went with the Vypyr Tube 120 watt. I had owned both of those Peavey amps back in the late 70's and into the mid 80's. Both were wonderful amps and were beating the then newer Fender Twin Reverb amps which I would have bought if they had sounded as good as my 3 older Black Face and earlier 70's Silver Face Twins had once sounded. As well as my Black Face Super Reverb and Black Face Fender "Concert" amp from 1965 had also sounded. However I guess I ran into a bad batch of Twins because I opened up 7 new ones right out of the boxes and each one had a small buzzing problem when I played thru all of them cleanly using both my then 1976 ES -335 and my 1976 Les Paul Custom. So in any event I'm very pleased with my 2 Peavey Vypyr amps and I can easily recommend them to many players that can use them for all kinds of gigging. I don't however have any problem with any players that want to use and own a tube amp of any kind as long as it suits their needs and keeps them playing without busting their bank account with repairs or re-tubing or any other problems. Lets face it, there's a lot of stuff out there to choose from these days to keep just about every type of player totally happy when it comes to a good sounding amp.

    • @PrestonSmithsMusic
      @PrestonSmithsMusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Again, well said. I will admit that modelling has come a long way in a very short time and I'm very impressed with it. Blind fold tests fool almost everyone. I use modelling (Bias FX, Amps and Pedals), but only at home. Live I use my tube amp, but use Bias FX modelling in the send/fx returns - because modulation pedals are expensive, lol. No one can tell. I appreciate the response. Art is subjective, but this is the future. And I love every part of it. ;)
      For the record, my amp is a Jet City 22H. I use the crunch channel, but swapped the glass for as clean a channel as I can make it (a little fuzz, fixed with my guitar volume). In front, my board uses just a Wah, Compressor, and a distortion pedal (Zoom Trimetal TM-01 with the gain nearly off - it's sporty, as it were). iRig stomp controls my Bias FX input on the Send/Return. Simple thing really. But I am loving modelling for all the creative possibilities.
      Stay heavy! \m/

      Hi i'm way too late, i hope you still reply to my comment. I owned a Mustang IV V2 that i hated a while ago because the volume is extremely too loud for bedroom practice, i had it at almost 0 on volume & master knob. What experience do you have with Mustang before the GT generation? I was thinking of purchasing Fender Mustang GT 100 over Katana, but do you think my Mustang is actually had decent preset rather than the newer GT 100? I thought that GT 100 would have better preset than my own, because i'm not too satisfied with my Mustang IV V2 amp selection at the moment.

  • @SingPsalms
    @SingPsalms 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Don’t have the Katana but I do have the Mustang, and I really like it. When you dig in deep and play with the settings in the presets you can get some awesome sounds. I only really like a handful of the presets that came on the Amp… so I made my own and wow much better. That said if I had to buy another Amp, I would consider heavily the Katana over the Mustang

    I agree the Katana sounds more clear and bites hard, but to me it seems it does prefer a more heavy music like hard-rock and metal styles and guitars like LP and heavy humbuckers. I kinda still like the feel and tone of the Fender, though I can see your point in the "muddy" feel to it.

    Sorry, but banging out 2 finger power chords on full gain is not a "comparison" of any sort. Fender amps (and the others), actually can make Fender amp noises and sounds that have tonal character when not obscured by distorted compression.

    To begin, I apologize...haven't listened to the channel in a while...however! It's not the amps I noticed, it's you. You have gotten way better at playing guitar! Probably my favorite thing about watching TH-cam artists like yourself is their apparent progression. Keep it up! I'll keep watching. From Canada, Cheers!
    Addendum, Fender is my shtick. But Boss is just that; the Boss. I think I'd stay with Fender because I have penchant for using a pedal board in front of the amp. Fender has the best clean, imo. So, it's not about 'win' it about preference.

  • @martinc3907
    @martinc3907 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the original vypyr 15,30 and 75w,the 30 and 75w have the best high gain models compared to boss,fender mustang all versions and even line 6 spider,i like the recto model for high gain tones on my vypyr's,it has a smoother mid range without sounding too harsh in the high end(i did also make a beam blocker to put in the center of the inside front grill cloth to filter out the harsh sounding high end on some of the high gain models),i compared my vypyr 75 recto model to my bugera 333 lead channel through my marshall 1960a 4x12 cab and i liked the peavey vypyr better then the 333 high gain,the vypyr had more gain to work with and also had more complex high gain harmonic overtones then my bugera 333.
      The problem with amp modeling is the lack of headroom on the clean channels compared to a tube amp's clean tones,even my vypyr has this issue,i have to turn the clean amp models much louder to be at the same level as the high amp models,that being said the newer modeling amps like the marshall code(i have the 50w model)and the katana 50w are getting closer to the loudness of a tube amps clean channel with higher headroom,let me also mention another thing about modeling amp factory presets,most of them from all manufactures of these amps sound very poor and i think this hurts the sales of some of these amps,you have to dig in and create your own presets for these modeling amps to sound there best!

    The the Mustang GT was a step backwards for Fender. The Boss Katana is better than the Mustang GT as a practice bedroom amp and even better than the Mustang III V2 as a practice bedroom amp , but when it comes to actually using an amp to gig with the Mustang III V2 sounds really good at high volumes whereas the Katana sounds like a cheap amp at high volumes.

    I had a M3 V.2 which sounded good but have been using my HT40 except for level volume practice for the past 2 years (night practice I use an IDcore Beam). Sold the Mustang in JAN then needed a smaller amp a month later that I could do Acoustic guitar so I picked up a Katana 50. It sounded amazing but I wanted 4 channels so I took it back and got the 100. The 100 has a heavier magnet on the speaker and a presence control. IMHO the Katana is quite bright by default but the with the 100 I have been able to really dial in the sound I want. I use it for both Acoustic rhythm and Electric lead work, usually through a LP, for Church every Sunday. However during the week I play everything from Maiden to SRV to Pink Floyd to KSE. Since getting the 100 I haven't used my HT40 but once at home (about 5 months now). It took a while to dial in the sounds I wanted but now that I have them, I just love this little but very loud amp.
    I saw the vid on the Vyper. I purchased one for my oldest son a few years ago but it had noise issues that were noted online, I took it back and they sent another that had the same problems, it was a bad cap from the factory. After 2 of them I decided to give Peavey a break for a couple of years but do plan to pick up a 6505 mini head soon. I played through a Classic 50 410 for years that could do everything... probably the best amp I ever owned in the 30+ years I've been playing.
    Loved all the Summer NAMM coverage, the interview with the Fender CEO was one of the best Q&As from all the YT channels I sub as was that great tour with Tacos you did with Acacia. Between you and Baker I'm seriously considering picking one up next year but now you have me thinking of the Kessels as well! :) Keep up the great work!

    Katana hands Down, it would be interesting to see the Katana shootout versus the mustang 111 or 1V version 2,any chance you could do it ? I tried the gt 40 in the store and thought it sounded very 'boxy' but assumed that it was just down to its size,I subsequently purchased the gt100 assuming the amp would sound more 3d and present but found it to just as boxy/nasal only much louder,I haven't seen a video were somebody tries a different speaker with the gt to see if it's a speaker issue or if the poor sound quality is just inherent in the software,if it's a software issue you would assume there is hope for the gt after software updates etc,the gt got returned and I bought a mustang 111 and it's simply a killer amp.great video TK

    I just purchased a mustang gt100, I keep hearing that the boss katana destroys the fender. Should I return it and buy a boss?

      Zach G. Yeah that's better, I was about to do the same until I tired them both. Boss wins!

    Mustang III v2 and Mustang IV v2 beats them both.
    The Mustang GT is worse than the Katana.

    Bought the Mustang GT 100 because I love my Mustang III V2, and assumed it would build on that platform and be even better. The GT arrived and after 2 hours of putting it through its paces, I placed it back in the packaging and shipped it back. MAJOR step backwards from the III. Comparing the Katana to the GT is tough because the Katana really doesn't model amps so much as it is an amp with 5 (Or so) voicings with Boss effects added. Hands down though, I have to say Katana wins. WAY more musical and complimentary to the guitar than the GT. IMO

    I hate to admit it but in this demo the Fender Mustang GT sounds better than the Boss Kattana, in comparison with other TH-cam reviews from the Mustang GT that left a lot to be desire IMO. Now the Fender mustang iii, iv, and v v.2 sound great and very tubey, but now the Mustang gt is sounding great again, and I really don't know if Fender updated the Mustang gt's firmware, and if they did, it is working.
    Great review and demo of these two s.s amps, Tone king you rock my friend.🤘

      Thanks MetalLion ... and this is proof that we all need to decide what works for each of us. For me - I liked the Katana better in this video, but again, to each their own. No right / No wrong. Thx \m/

    I like the sound of the Katana better. I own a Katana Head and it's a very versatile amp. Thanks TK!
