Ashleigh: I'm having the best time
Jeff Goldblum: That's how it always starts... but then later, there's running and screaming
I want button eyes
The ooh and ahh, then there's the running and the screaming. LOL love it!
Why did I read it in his voice even the I want button eyes lol
This is directed by Henry Selick, the same guy who directed "Nightmare Before Christmas."
Incoming "No TiM bUrToN dIrEcTeD iT" uninformed responses lol
@@robling1937 nope. Tim created NBC lol directing, producing, creating, and writing are ALL different jobs in film making.
@asiawest1973 i know... that's what I'm saying. I'm pointing out that uninformed people are the loudest and uninformed people think Tim Burton directed NBC. I'm a Selick stan and am always hyping him up.
@@asiawest1973I don't think you read what the comment above you said...
@@asiawest1973…
CORALINE is one of my Favorite movies. I absolutely LOVE it. It's visually Stunning, the voice cast was amazing & it's just a great story.
Fun fact: in the book, one of the ghost children Coraline rescues from the Beldam is pretty explicitly a fairy child. When the freed souls of the ghost kids show up in Coraline's dream to warn her that the Beldam is still after her, one of the girls has wings and eats flowers at their dream picnic while the other two look like regular human children and eat ordinary food.
I awlays figured the Beldam stole her realm from the fairy child. Of course that doesn't explain the being in the tunnel.
I went to an animation convention where the film makers broke down in detail how there is only 1 thing in the entire movie that's CGI (the fog) and everything else, including the raindrops, are practical. I remember walking out of that panel thinking "why would anyone do this to themselves?" work-wise and I AM LITERALLY AN ANIMATOR
So many people keep saying Coralines parents are ignoring her, not paying attention to her, but they never take a moment to see it from the parents perspective. The mom is injured(neck brace), which most likely means expensive medical bills. They moved to a more affordable place because money is very tight(hence the 1 dollar tip) & they're working with a very short deadline to finish the Gardening catalog so they can get payed. So they are stressed & worried. That can make anyone act like that.
the theory is, she actually dies in the car accident and they're not ignoring her, she's not actually there!
Yep. If I recall correctly it's a bit more clear on the book but moved due to financial reasons. They are stressed out because they need to get the work done on order to get paid before bills are due.
@@asiawest1973 I've heard the 'She's actually dead' theory, but they do actually interact with her, so she is really there.
I did hear something about her being dead & trapped(confined) to the house(the estate grounds up to the garden & the well), but I don't remember the details about it.
@@Alexeya13 That could be interesting, like she fell down the well after Wybie showed it to her, but we see her out in town with her parents so that kinda disproves it already
@@PlaystationSimmer True. I forgot that. The only way that theory would make sense is if she died after going to town. But even that seem problematic.
Laika never misses. I hope you can watch Paranorman eventually.
Also, secret phrase: I want button eyes!
I do like all of Laika’s films, but I tend to be more careful of whom I would recommend watching “The Boxtrolls” 😅
Yesss Paranorman!! 💖
This is what I came to the comments for. Paranorman is fantastic.
@@FlyinMunky
Paranorman is my favorite of their movies. I would say Kubo is their best made.
@@LucareonVee I love Kubo and the Two Strings as well. I almost came back and edited my reply to mention it
I named my daughter after this movie and my husband sings her the song all the time
DON'T MOVE INTO THE PINK HOUSE! Also, stick to something other than a garden catalog as work... never put your daughter through this.
That's so cool!! Coraline is a beautiful name, I'd totally name my daughter(that I'll never gonna have) Coraline 💜
The depth of the sets is an amazing detail. “The real world” sets are all close depth lending a slightly claustrophobic feel, while the other world sets are deep, lending a more comfortable, freer feeling to the film… it’s subtle, but effective.
I was fortunate enough to see this in 3D when it first came out. It’s definitely worth seeing in all its glory. A truly unique story. The burlesque number is still one of my favorite scenes
Fun Fact! Due to the Amazing Bobinski's blue skin, medal, Russian Accent, and Beetroot

I want button eyes!
If you were paying attention to the Other Father's song, you'd realize that it was actually a warning.
Making up a song about coraline.
She's a peach (something to eat) she's a doll (how the other mother spies on her)
she's a pal of mine (he actually cares about her.)
She's a cute as a button to everyone who ever laid their eyes on coraline (buttons for eyes)
When she comes exploring, mom and I will never ever make it boring (how the other mother plans to lure her into staying)
Our eyes will be on coraline (sewing the buttons into her eyes)
And then the pause right at the end, before he pulls away, he looks right at the camera like he's saying, "Did you get that?"
I want button eyes. Ironically, the book is even creepier! What a great way to kick off the season!
The 'Other Father' song was written and sung by John Linnell of nerdrock band They Might Be Giants!
My favorite part of this whole movie!
I KNEW I recognized that voice!!
It might give Tim Burton vibes because the director is Henry Selick, who worked on stop motion projects with Tim before like Nightmare Before Christmas, and James and the Giant Peach. This was his only project with Laika, which was formed to create modern stop motion movies like this. They make a lot of original movies, but each one has made less and less money. People complain about sequels and remakes, but then don't go to see original ideas like this studio has. That said Coraline was their biggest hit... but I absolutely must recommend Paranorman! It might be their best film!
Coralline has been re-released a few times this year, in 3D too. It seemed like quite a few people saw it based on the 2 showings we went to see. Hopefully renewed interest finds funding for more projects.
James and the Giant Peach would be an amazing suggestion for Ashleigh to watch
I also quite enjoyed _The Boxtrolls_ .
ParaNorman & Kubo and the 2 Strings are by the same studio; also amazing
in keeping with the "I want button eyes!" theme, my besties daughter loved this film and i ended up making her some sunglasses in the shape of the button eyes so she could dress as 'other' Coraline for halloween 😁
Got a ittle green raincoat from Primark and we carved the cat in a small pumpkin to carry around.
"I want button eyes"
Happy Hallowbeans!
i love how you go german when you get jumpscared 😅, makes me feel very included as german.
You’ve literally been watching my favorite movies I literally yelled when I seen the title. Coraline & the great muppet capper I LOVE ITTT
I have some very specific phobias, and Coraline hits ALL of them, so this is the scariest movie in the world to me. I watch it every Halloween lol. So glad you watched this!
This movie is a masterpiece of stop-motion. It was so perfect I thought is was all CGI.
It's a "Divining Rod," people use to use them to find water underground. My mother said, when she was growing up you never dug a new well unless the "diviner" checked where to dig first.
People use them scam people into paying them.
In July, I've been to an exhibition in the Museum of Pop Art in Seattle, WA, where Laika, the company behind Coraline, displayed the way they 3D printed the figurines in hundreds of versions to have them have facial expressions and other features like moving hair unseen so far in stop-motion movies.
For a bit of a more lighthearted but still Halloween themed with a really dark reveal, I recommend Paranorman (made by the same company that did Coraline).
Kubo & the Two Strings tood
I love this movie so much. It does truly capture how a child feels when their parents aren't giving them enough attention because you only see what she sees--the parents never tell Coraline about what they are going through because she's just a child, so you can only infer it through visual cues and certain lines of dialogue. As a result, you do at first feel they are neglecting her--but on a second or even third watch, you start noticing things and realize the truth. They aren't neglectful, they are just on very hard times and have to dedicate their time and energy to getting out of them for the sake of the whole family. Honestly, that's why Coraline didn't truly fall for the Beldam's tricks--it's very clear that her parents actually ARE very loving and dedicated for the most part, hence the reason she rejected the offer of the button eyes. She only caught Coraline during a temporary bad time, so while it was tempting, it ultimately failed.
Also, this whole movie was stop-motion/claymation, so you should definitely be impressed, especially with the mouse circus. There was no CGI with those little dancing mice, SO much work went into them.
Finally, I am SO glad you immediately noticed that she walked into the ring of mushrooms--that is a very subtle sign that her misadventure is about to begin. She steps into the fairy ring, and only after she drops the hand in and walks out does it officially end, as a Beldam is one of the old-school faery-folk, those terrifying creatures that have a morality so alien to our own that we can't comprehend it and only seem to exist to cause humans pain and eat children.
Ever seen a seven year old have a panic attack? Well, I went to see this in theatres on opening day. That was an experience.
On the flipside, yes, it WAS very cool in 3D.
It was terrifying in 3D, lol. I actually ducked (and made a noise :P) in the opening credits!
28:57 Recently saw Coraline Remastered in 3D for the anniversary and it was amazing. They literally recreated it frame by frame and made the colors more vivid and added even more details.
# I want button eyes! This is based on a book by Neil Gaiman, another movie based on one of his books that you might enjoy is STARDUST.
Stardust is so underrated, no-one ever reacts to it and it's so good.
This is the only movie I consider 100% perfect! There is not a single flaw to this film. I go see it every year when they rerelease it. And this year it was in 3D again which I appreciated!
I want button eyes! This could have been a a night vision movie.
Definitely look at the behind the scenes for this movie. So much work and detail.
laika always makes great movies, hope youll watch more of them eventually :)
I want button eyes!
With the stuff I grew up with (Gremlins, Poltergeist, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Watership Down, Red Dawn, The Dark Crystal, etc.), this probably would've been my favorite movie as a kid.
"Our eyes will be on Coraline."
Thank you so much! Laika deserves more reactions especially Kubo and the Two Strings is the most heartfelt and visually stunning. Also has elements of horror like this one
HALLO BEANS IS MY FAVORITE TIME OF SEASON🎃 very jealous of your advent calendar! I want button eyes
Yay! One of my favorite movies ever! I actually named my female cat after Coraline. 😸
I'm tellin' ya = if you watch _Serial Mom_ on one of these Wednesdays, it will be The Hit of the entire Hallo-Beans' season. The film never fails. Everyone loves it.
Omgggg I totally forgot about Serial Mom!😂😂
YESSS! What a phenomenal suggestion!
But that’s a Mother’s Day movie hahaha
@@glamtastic Can you wait for May? Even the prospect of that is just impossible to fathom. Heck, look how long I've waited for _Scream 3._
They actually recently had this in 3D for the anniversary of the film and it was really cool.
I want button eyes! Lordy B, the way I let out a happy screech at this notification and cracked up at you watching this for lighthearted Wednesday 😂
One of my favorite memories is my grandma (God rest her) taking me to see this in the theater on a random weekday just for the heck of it, and I’d been wanting to see it and absolutely LOVED it! One of my all time faves ever since

I got this book at a book fair in elementary school and then saw it in theaters in high school. Love the cat of course lol. 🐈⬛
I would say "I want button eyes! 👻" but I don't want to be turned into a claymation ghost.
I absolutely want to be turned into a claymation ghost are you kidding?
Oh... but the button eyes would hurt if you weren't... ouch!
I want button eyes!
This type of animation is amazing, people don't appreciate the talent it takes to animate this way, or the old school hand drawing way for that matter. I own the Coraline DVD (or maybe it's BluRay), and I don't know if it was extras on that or if I saw a video online, but they explained also how they did the fog effect in the movie, being stop animated and all, and how they made the puppets, how they animate facial expression.
Very interesting stuff.
So ready for Spooky season 🎃😱
Secret phrase: I want button eyes!
Now nobody needs to watch the video or search for the secret phrase if you are just going to label it in your comment.
The hardest scene they had to film for this movie was the mice circus performance. If you know anything about stop motion, you know it's ridiculously hard to pull off, especially like this.
I want button eyes!
One of my favorites! I did a Coraline costume back when this movie came out, my hair was blue at the time, and i used my existing wardrobe.. and i got the Caroline/Coraline thing all the time. It was perfect. I even had a cat mitten that i wore as my little companion 😆
I want button eyes!
I want button eyes!
@28:58, Fun fact, this film was shown in 3D when it was originally released. As someone who saw it that way in theaters, it really was something else. It's honestly one of the only films I've ever seen in 3D that honestly felt like it was worth it.
I want button eyes.
4:39 comment it's used to find water under ground...called a divining rod--Y shaped and long follow the feel or slight vibration inthe direction of the feel.-Ernie MOORE Jr.
Saw this a few years back at my aunt's house via Netflix. I don't know if it's my love of claymation and stop-motion or just the overall story in general, but I found myself watching this movie three times in a row that day. This movie is something else, but in the best way possible. So happy to see you're another fan among many!
Neil Gaiman did another creepy kids film called Mirror Mask.
I want button eyes!
Visually stunning too in a abstract/steampunk vibe.
He also did a bunch of rapes, sooooooooooo....
Would Mirror Mask count as a kid's film? I dunno I feel its too...."artistic" I guess to be a kid's movie. I feel like most kid's would find it very boring
Just like me, they want to be...
@zachariousmccool5768 when I was a kid I was obsessed with Citizen Kane, I even had a cat named Rose Bud. You'd be surprised what kids enjoy if you allow them.
They re-released Coraline in 3D a few weeks ago down by me. I took my little sister as it’s our favourite movie, let’s just say I had partaken in some gardening 🍃 earlier in the day and this movie in 3D blazed is a memory I won’t forget😂
So when Neil Gaiman (author of the book who is currently under investigation for SA) wrote this, he set out to write a children's horror book. His editor told him there is no way this could be marketed to kids; way too scary. Neil suggested she take it home and read it to her kid and get a kids' perspective. So she did, stopping every so often to make sure the daughter wanted to keep going, and the daughter kept say yes. Years later, the daughter said she was terrified but had to know what happened next. So it may have been too scary, but it got published anyways.
One heck if a way to kick off spooky season! Also, I want button eyes.
I don't know what being under investigation has to do with his skill as a writerm
@@matthewcole4753 what does his skill as a writer have to do with anything? that's not the matter at hand. This is a description of harm Gaiman may have done with his personal behavior and with his writing. You're free to make another comment that's about his skill as a writer and then it would make sense to stay on that topic.
Kids love creepy things! My favorite book as a 4 yr old was a horror story "The Tailypo" & I loved creepy movies like The Last Unicorn, The Dark Crystal & Watership Down
@@matthewcole4753 Maybe you think it's irrelevant, but to many, MANY people, knowing someone is a predator is information they want to know about an artist before they seek out more of their work.
@@rzjennings Thank you for sharing this about him, I didn't know and now I do and I'm grateful for the information
Also the Author wrote it for his daughter who loved spooky stuff! He started writing when his youngest daughter was 6years old. Her parents are not ignoring her, moving is expensive and they are under a tight deadline for their articles or book they are writing so they can get paid which is why her mom doesn’t buy her the gloves until after they turn in their chapters.
Lighthearted movies on Wednesday. Proceeds to then watch Coraline. LoL
“I want button eyes!”
There are a lot of hints to what truly happens in the other world. The lyrics of the other fathers song ‘she’s a peach-something to eat, she’s a doll- intention to sew buttons, she’s a pal of mine- he’s her friend’ ‘out eyes will be on Coraline’
The three portraits in the dining room on the wall (2 girls and a guy), the needle like hand thunder shape to make the rain, the fact that the other mother doesn’t eat, but constantly tries to make sure Coraline is well fed, usually with a smile, etc.
You can always go back to this movie and find something new!
Great review.
The sections from TH-cam were included in the offer. You turned out to be the champ!!!
As a Coraline fan, I am SO excited to be here for your first time watch! 😁
I've seen this movie exactly once, and all I remember is it freaked me out so I never watched it again.😂 I don't even remember how old I was
I watched it hundreds of times and still get excited every single time bc I love it so much 😆

I want button eyes!
Big hit in our house, my oldest read the book and it gave her nightmares but she still adores the movie now❤
I liked the way the other mother’s food looked.
I want button eyes!
I watched this at 14 when this movie came out. My heart was pumping during the scary parts. Baby me wasn't there for the buttons for eyes.
The movie was advertised as 3d and I remember watching this in the theater. When she goes thru the little door is when it turned 3d and it really felt like you were crawling thru the tunnel.
I want button eyes!
This is mine and my kids FAVORITE spooky movie! I think we watch it multiple times a year! It’s so good! Also the cat is other worldly, in the book he says our names own us and tie us to our dimension so he doesn’t have a name.
I've never seen this film from start to finish, but it's very reminiscent of some changeling stories. I want button eyes.
well you do recall that a little girl doll with braids was turned inside out and made into a Coraline doll right? it was locked in the attic and no one saw it except Whyborn.
thats why grandma had a Coraline doll, because it used to be another little girl.
Heh, you mean Wyboure?
You kinda dissed the boy like Coraline did. 😄
My teenage daughter's favorite movie! We recently got to see it in the theater for a 15 year anniversary showing. She is going to be Coraline for Halloween.
This is my 13 year old daughter's favorite movie and has been since she was like 6. It is her comfort movie.
I want button eyes - and have them! I 3D printed the buttons for my Halloween costume as Other Coraline for this year! I have a Coraline doll, blue wig, and her outfit with the stars sweater. I’m soooo looking forward to it.
Something to notice. And it adds to a particular interpretation. During the opening doll scene, you can tell if you look that the needles are steel, or even metal at all.
They're bone.
I want button eyes!
I love the pacing and armosphere of this movie. It takes its time, builds a mood, lets you sit in a scene.
There was recently a Laika animation exhibit in Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture that had the actual Pink Palace in a room and a bunch of the dolls on display. And to get to the next area, you actually walked through a bigger replica of the colorful tunnel.
So excited to watch your HalloBeans series this year!
This movie was one of a handful of interesting projects that They Might Be Giants were invovled in, essentially rebooting their career. They started in the mid 80s, and they always had a huge underground following, but then they got picked to do the theme song for Malcom in the Middle, and Disney came calling not long after that. The "Song About Coraline" that Other Dad sings is TMBG, the voice singing isn't the voice actor for Dad, it's John Linnell of TMBG.
A 'y' shaped stick is sometimes used as a divining rod to try and find underground water. Sometimes it seems to work but no-one knows why.
Coraline in 3D is an absolutely magical experience (although still terrifying). You notice far more too, like the doll changing position to watch Coraline.
The sections from TH-cam were included in the offer. You turned out to be the champ!!!
I said it yesterday, and I'll say it again: Hooray for Spooky Season!
I want button eyes!
Heck, maybe I do. They'd be more interesting than my boring old brown eyes.
This one and "Kubo and the Two Strings" are my favorites of the Laika stop-motion movies, but they're all worth a watch, as are the videos that show them being made. There's an amazing amount of craftsmanship going on with the creation of every thing you see on screen. And yes, the 3D for this one was among the best I've ever seen, since again *everything already existed in 3d* and was filmed that way.
As for the secret phrase, you didn't actually say what to do with it in this video... But still, I want button eyes. Who wouldn't?
28:59. I saw it in 3-D when it first came out. The best part (imo) was when they flew over the Coraline garden.
When I saw the trailer to this, I immediately wanted to see it. 2009 kinda pumped out some “darker” animations that year. This, and 9 especially. When I convinced my family to see this, I pitched in for the $2 extra for 3D glasses. We all enjoyed it, and there were some parts where the 3D elements really came out. Like the lil dragonflies flying around her room during the first visit, the gloves on the piano, and the lil particles of the button moon as it started to crumble. Those were what I remember the most. (Should’ve added in the clam shells bra as a joke there 😂). As a side note, my four year old niece handles this movie better than her dad; he’s terrified of this movie. The only scene that gives me the shivers is when Other Mother bangs the door, and starts shrinking the tunnel.
I absolutely love Hallowbeans! And, I want button eyes!
The purple tunnel always makes me think of the tunnels cats play in. We had one but our cats would only lay on it.
The sections from TH-cam were included in the offer. You turned out to be the champ!!!
This movie is such a gem! And it was definitely scarier than you initially think it's going to be. Made me never want to say, "I want button eyes!"
YES!! Love this movie so so much!! The artstyle, the atmosphere, the score, the stop-motion, I could watch this movie every day and never get tired of it!! 💜
i wish more kids' movies represented poverty in this relatable way. the mustard ketchup salsa wrap for lunch is such a mood.
This movie freaked my daughter out!! She already had a pretty well developed fear of spiders and watching Coraline tipped her over into a full blown phobia. She was very angry with me after watching it- i didn't realize it was as scary as it was! I think it is more of a horror movie than many films marketed to adults as such.
I remember seeing this in my local cinema after it had just opened for the first time, so there was the brand new velvet curtains and the starry painted ceiling and the velvet seats and this matched the tone so well. Great time. I want button eyes? Purple ones if I haaaaad to :D
I want button eyes!! The "stick" she's holding is what legend calls a "divining rod". Old timey beliefs (and some contemporary) use this to find water sources below ground...
i was 4 when this movie came out it’s been my favourite since, i was always so excited around Halloween time cause i knew it would be on tv i still watch it every halloween
Can we talk about Teri Hatcher's voice work in this? She's so good as both versions of the mom.
This movie was just brought back in theaters near me. I know it sounds stupid, but I want button eyes.
This was the first "animated" movie I ever saw in 3D, it just blew my mind. Then I found out it was based on a novel by Neil Gaiman and I just knew i had to track it down and read it... Sooo Dark, but what a great read! Also "I want Button eyes!"
Teri Hatcher gave it her all for The Other Mother's performance, and it's never talked about enough!
