Elvis Costello is one of the greatest lyricists of all time, full of double entendres, insight and venom. The guy takes no prisoners. There is definitely a punk influence in his early work, but later he branches off into all kinds of genres ... psychedelic, acid, jazz, country. But he certainly still knows how to ROCK. The man is just a sensational talent.

I think he used 'Punk' as a way of getting noticed and once he realized they were going to make it he quickly discarded the whole Punk thing. Their first 3 albums indicated how versatile they were and Punk was way below them.

@@xaspirate8060- Except for The Clash! They started out full-on punk, but by the time of London Calling (masterpiece!) and Combat Rock, they pretty much played whatever genre they wanted. I do *adore* Elvis and the Attractions. So versatile! Sorry about the tangent!

Lex was right in saying that this song is "slightly punk". Elvis Costello and his band came to prominence in the UK just as punk was commercialising into "New Wave", and he was part of that scene. Costello is a great songwriter and a clever lyricist. I recommend "Oliver's army", "Watching the detectives" and "Alison" if you want to react to more of his songs.

    • @dancarrick4357

I would throw in there "Deep Dark Truthful Mirror" (showcase for his voice and also great piano by Allen Toussaint), "Veronica," "So Like Candy," "Pads, Paws & Claws," and "Other Side of Summer" for a different sort of vibe,

    • @lumpyfishgravy
      @lumpyfishgravy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

"Watching the detectives" is superb! For about 20 years all I had was a mono tape recording and got used to how it sounded, thinking the distorted drums were down to my recording. I now know that's how they really sound! The live versions are more spirited but nowhere near as spooky.

"A little bit punk" -- nailed it. Elvis Costello emerged in the UK while punk was at its peak, and the various streams of "new wave" were just beginning to form. For future Elvis Costello reactions, find videos with the lyrics -- because his songwriting is rich with subtle wordplay.

Lex is right, he's a bit punk, but is really a unique entity. He would have been considered post punk or new wave for most of his career; but always had that anti-authority, rebellious thing going. One of my all time favs and was lucky enough to see him in '91 & '02. A great wordsmith and has a knack for writing super catchy hooks. This LP (his second) is one of his best & This Year's Girl is another banger from it ✌

Elvis Costello is such a cool, down to earth guy. I used to work in a bar/restaurant in Toronto's airport. There was an airport shuttle bus driver that used to come in sometimes for his lunch. He came in on a break and was so excited. He knew I loved music so told me Elvis Costello used the bus to transfer from his flight to the terminal and the driver recognized him, while chatting said he was a fan but most of his albums were destroyed in a fire. Elvis took his name and address. About five weeks later the bus driver came into my work freaking out. Elvis had his inter discography sent to his home with all the albums signed. He even sent as many 45's as were available. Freaking Legend!

The song's about the promotion of a tour in 1977.
It punk rock, no doubt, at least that how it sounded to us punk rockers in 78.
    ok an' here's lyrics
I've been on tenderhooks, ending in dirty looks
Listening to the Muzak, thinking 'bout this 'n' that
    She said, "That's that, I don't wanna chitter-chat"
Turn it down a little bit or turn it down flat
Pump it up, when you don't really need it
Pump it up, until you can feel it
Down in the pleasure center, hell-bent or heaven-sent
Listen to the propaganda, listen to the latest slander
There's nothing underhand that she wouldn't understand
Pump it up, until you can feel it
Pump it up, when you don't really need it
    Hey
    She's been a bad girl, she's like a chemical
Though you try to stop it, she's like a narcotic
You wanna torture her, you wanna talk to her
All the things you bought for her, could not get a temperature
Pump it up, until you can feel it
Pump it up, when you don't really need it
Out in the fashion show, down in the bargain bin
You put your passion out under the pressure pin
    Fall into submission, hit-and-run transmission
No use wishing now for any other sin
Pump it up, until you can feel it
Pump it up, when you don't really need it
Pump it up, until you can feel it
Pump it up, when you don't really need it
Pump it up, until you can feel it
Pump it up, when you don't really need it
    Don't really need it
    Don't really need it
    Don't really need it

Please PPl ... let's not forget that Elvis C has worked with Burt Bacharach, a classical quartet (Brodski) and Elmo (Sesame Street)... He has also been involved in Mastering , Engineering and Producing some hugely influential Artists and Albums from the late 70s to now.... an underrated but hugely influential musician... (I actually bumped into him, literally I came out of a Sandwich shop and bumped into him) , in the backstreets of Soho London , in the 90s , and all i could say was "Thank You".

Elvis Costello was one of the pioneers of alternative rock music in the late 1970s. Being a pioneer, however, he wasn't ubiquitous on the pop music charts, at least not in the U.S. He was very popular in the U.K, but in the U.S., he's had only two Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100:
"Everyday I Write The Book" (#36 in 1983)
    "Veronica" (#19 in 1989)
"Veronica" is his biggest hit, and "Everyday I Write The Book" is his signature song. However, if I had to recommend one song of his to you, then I'd recommend "Accidents Will Happen," which is my favorite of his. The music video for it was considered very cutting-edge for 1979, being the first music video known to have used computer animation (briefly near the end of the video).

Elvis Costello was marketed as "new wave" back in the late seventies, but his songs often evoked the greats from the fifties and sixties. You could spend quite a lot of time digging into the Elvis Costello catalog as follow up to "Pump It Up" -- "Radio Radio", "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes", "Watching the Detectives", "(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea", "Less Than Zero", "Pay It Back", "What's So Funny ('Bout Peace, Love, and Understanding)?", "Accidents Will Happen", "Oliver's Army", "I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down", "Brilliant Mistake", "I Hope You're Happy Now", "I Want You", "Veronica" and so many others.

Elvis Costello is a very deep well. Many eras but for many of us who discovered him at the start, 1977-81 is the apex. (This is from 1978, the second album.) So many to recommend:
    Watching the Detectives (hit single)
    Less Than Zero
    Alison
    Mystery Dance
    Radio, Radio (hit single)
    No Action
    This Year's Girl
    Little Triggers
    Lipstick Vogue
(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding (hit single)
    Oliver's Army
    Party Girl
    Goon Squad
    Two Little Hitlers
Pretty much everything, all 20 tracks, from "Get Happy!!"
    Clubland
    Strict Time
From a Whisper to A Scream (hit single)
And there's a lot more in the 40 years that have followed.
His wife, Diana Krall, is the foremost female jazz singer of the past 20 years.

This Elvis is the true King. Definitely has punk, Ska, post punk credentials as part of his resume. He is also a tremendous music producer. Check out "Watching the Detectives" by Costello

Been a fan of Costello since the late 70s. Definitely punk vibe, as he came out big during the first wave of British punk. He's definitely an awesome artist.

1978 was at the end of the punk era and this is his rockiest song. Oliver's Army is another gem and on this song the lyrics are vital as it is all about the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

fun fact: for recording this album, Elvis needed a band (that band's singer didn't play on this album, obviously). The one he hired, called Clover, went on to become a band called The News, and the singer that didn't work on the Elvis Costello album? Huey Lewis.

Oh my God. Lex is right on the money...Again! She hit the nail on the head when she said it sounded a little punk. Elvis was at the start of punk at this point. His music is great. Great song writer, and great performer. Lex, you are batting 1000. And you are so cute when you get all into the music. Love it...and you.

Oh boy I bought this 7 inch single when it came out and still have it to this day. Elvis Costello remains one of my favourites and he has a very eclectic and varied catalogue that spans from 1977 to this day. His latest album (The Boy Named If) is fantastic.
Try any of the following songs....Watching the Detectives, I Don't Want to Go To Chelsea, Accidents Will Happen, High Fidleity, Alison, Radio Radio, Ship Building, Oliver's Army, Veronica (written with Paul McCartney)...there are many more . That said I think his biggest hit was a cover of "She" with Burt Bacharach for the soundtrack of the film Notting Hill.

He was and is a great songwriter, lots of classics from the old days. Wicked, sarcastic smart lyrics. Red Shoes, Mystery Dance, Accidents Will Happen, anything from the Imperial Bedroom album (Beyond Belief, Man Out of Time, Almost Blue), so many great songs.

Please react to Elvis Costello more. It's a must to have the lyrics because I think this guy has some of the best.
