    Hey Kristy,
    This video is amazing, thanks for showing us how you get around using technology. I'm a digital designer and this is the kind of things I wish more companies would spend their money and research on... certainly why I chose this career, I always thought technology should always be used to improved people's lives...
    Again, thanks for sharing this video with everybody!

    That’s really incredible to see (and hear!) that in action! I was just thinking yesterday about how far the voice commands and speech-to-text functions have come, and I was wondering how well an iPhone would work for the visually impaired! Crazy timing then, because I didn’t google that; it was just a stray thought. Then this came up on my news feed this morning, so I had to check it out! Thanks for creating this channel and sharing your experiences!

    Your braille keyboard reminds me a lot of a project called GKOS, it's a minimal, chorded keyboard with just 6 keys, that can reproduce any keystroke in a standard keyboard and also has some typography features to speed up common words (like words beginning with 'th') and mouse control. I thought it was such a promising design, accessible and (IIRC) open source, but I never saw it implemented on anything. I think this is the first time I saw something very close to it (even the way to use it, 3 fingers on each side) being used at this speed. Very cool!

    • @KristyViers
      @KristyViers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Joel Denne There is an option to completely turn the screen off it's called Screen Curtain. It's for Voiceover users for some added privacy like if you are out in public. It doesn't save battery in my current phone because it is an LCD screen. OLED screens would save battery.

    How long does it take to learn braille in imput on the iPhone?

    • @KristyViers
      @KristyViers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well part of it depends on how much Braille a person knows. I've known Braille since a little first and second grader so I caught on quickly. It only took me a day or 2 to learn backspace, return and how to switch back and forth between the Braille keyboard, Braille screen input back to the standard keyboard with the letters and numbers like on a computer. Hope that makes sense.

    • @KristyViers
      @KristyViers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I go to settings, accessibility, Voiceover and down to Braille. I select Braille screen input 6 dot. Then I go to rotor and select Braille screen input in the rotor. Then Braille screen input the Braille keyboard is ready to beaa used. To start the rotor and access Braille screen input take pointer finger and thumb and turn right on the screen of iPhone or iPad. When Voiceover says Braille screen input it is activated and you place 6 fingers on the screen it calibrates your fingers then start typing. Then same rotor motion with pointer and thumb to leave typing area. ''

    That insanely high level of difficulty is exactly what I'd expect from an Apple product. Even on Android, Pentikeyboard allows you to place the buttons wherever you want.
    If were gonna keep having phones and never move on to watches, there should be a tactile braille OUTPUT and a gesture typing input on the touchscreen (I suggest Flexiclock)

    • @mcwooley
      @mcwooley 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flexiclock is a concept of mine where you draw the hands of a clock ANYWHRE on your screen (no vision required) to type a character, play a musical note, push a game button, etc. 144 different possible times to draw gives you 144 different possible inputs!
