I've been an OT for over 25 years and still come to you every week to see what ideas you've come up with. They are always brilliant. Very simple ideas that are effective. Thank you!

Great idea to use the "food/mouth" idea... love it! I also position the jacket on their lap or a table so that the top of the jacket is closest to their body and the bottom, where the joining mechanism piece is further away but still within reaching distance. This still allows it to be easier since they aren't wearing the jacket, but it also allows them to see the same visual orientation and to have the same hand placement that they would if they were wearing it. Parents can also look at a thrift store for a kid's jacket or raincoat that has a very large zipper (I have a kid's life jacket with a huge zipper!) which will be easier to handle for kids with fine motor difficulties!

Absolutely brilliant! My 4 year old son picked it up so quickly, he absolutely loved the food in the mouth method. When he pulls the zip up we make eating noises 😄 Thank you so much! 👍

Any tips for a student with a visual impairment? Anything you would change or do differently?
    Fight On!

    • @TheOTGuide

Hey Patty! Thank you for your question! For a child with visual impairments, I would alter my approach slightly in that I would increase the number of tactile cues available (if possible). So that might look like adding a piece of sticky tape to the zipper, or gluing something fuzzy to the top of it so the child can more easily locate it with their hands. If the child is visually impaired and not completely blind, maybe I'd add something super bright, reflective, and colorful to the zipper, again to make it more locatable. Does that make sense? This definitely would require some creative and out-of-the-box thinking to effectively problem-solve :)
