Drake reflects: "Aaliyah had the biggest influence on my music"

- Hip Hop superstar Drake speaks to SoulCulture TV about the impact Aaliyah Dana Houghton (January 16, 1979 -- August 25, 2001) has made on his music and career and wishes the R&B princess a happy birthday on what would have been her 32nd.
"Aside from that," the chart-topping rapper-singer adds, "she just made phenomenal music and she was beautiful and she was a girl that I fell in love with early in my life -- I feel like if she was still here I would probably be pursuing her in a major way, you know, because I was truly in love with her very early on."

To those who say that Aaliyah didn't write her music, you're right. She was not a songwriter; however, there is a great interview where Aaliyah explained how she contributed to the writing of her songs. She was definitely a part of the process and she had in depth discussions with her songwriters to make sure they were always conveying her thoughts and from her voice and perspective. This was very important to her. You might be able to find the interview here on youtube; I think it might be the last interview she did before passing or one of the last ones.

@@lisalong8816 Aaliyah worked with a close team of writers. In the beginning it was a collaboration with R Kelly, in that he wrote the songs but he wrote them specifically based around what Aaliyah wanted to talk about. This continued on the second album with a host of different writers. However, by her third album her writing team comprised of in-house Blackground (her uncle’s label) staff writers and producers. Static is responsible for honing what became her signature song format style, as he wrote some of her biggest latter career hits.

he did the song to bring aaliyah back so everyone can enjoy her voice again. i think the song was a great song. it made me remember how beautiful her voice was and how talented she was. i think ppl are upset because alot of them weren't ready for a brand new aaliyah song to come out specially when she isnt here in person.

Why are some of you hating on Drake? I think it's absolutely amazing that he's bringing her music back to these times, because unfortunately, whenever an artist is lost, their music quickly becomes lost too. Honestly, if it weren't for him, I would have NEVER known who Aaliyah was - I was too young to really appreciate her music when she was alive. Thanks to him, she is now my all-time favorite artist. @flyinspiration I started respecting Drake after this video. It's great people is still remembering her and her music, and using their talent to keep the legacy alive. He should try to cover one of her songs, I am sure he'd do the hell of a version. I didn't like "Unforgettable" that much, but you could feel him a lot there.

Seeing these type of testimonies really makes you understand why Drake is where he is now. He studied the game, that's why he's always doing something that will still impact the culture decades later even after he's gone, he wants timelessness and longevity. Think about his debut album, this dude had Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Jeezy, Swizz Beatz, Wayne, The Dream, T.i and even Kanye produced some of the songs on there. If he released that album with Aaliyah it would've been a banger for sure

Truth is I respect Drake and Love Aaliyah I feel a little Aaliyah in Drakes songs I'm just glad she influenced some great artist.
Still to this day I never understood the hate Drake got for being an Aaliyah stan.... like EVERYONE wasn't in love in that woman at some point or still is. Enough Said was so iconic because he was the only artist trying to bring her angelic voice & spirit back & keep her legacy alive. (No disrespect because I kinda understand their reasoning) But at the same time, Tim & Missy wasn't going to do it....NOBODY was gonna even try to do it. It's like everybody that was so called in her entourage move so funny when it comes to keeping her legacy alive. They made a tribute song and did nothing for years. Drake was the only mainstream artist who wanted to do that, respectfully, and let her be known.
I love Drake. I think he is so talented and I am a big fan of his. The fact that he loves Aaliyah just gives him bonus points. I am a die hard Aaliyah fan. Have been forever and always will be.
