    When my son was a kid we used to go up to Pulga, just north of the Pulga bridge, to swim at a wide spot in the river that the locals call "Sandy Beach." Every _really_ hot, 100+ degree day that I could I would pack us a lunch and load up the dog and the kid and hit Sandy Beach. Lying in the warm sun on that steep, sandy beach felt absolutely idyllic. Before we left we would eat the heart out of a watermelon that had been chilling in the river all afternoon. We would always leave the rest of the watermelon in the shrubs around the beach for the animals that live there. There was never a scrap of our leftovers when we'd go back, even if was the very next day. The deer and the squirrels loved our scraps. Thanks for showing us all the destruction, even if it is heartbreaking.

    Thanks for your reports, very informative. My sister and niece live in Paradise about a 1/4 mile apart. My sisters house survived, 1 of 2 houses out of 19 on her street that survived. My nieces house is gone. I've spent a great deal of time taking my sister on drives throughout the area, so I'm quite familiar with it. In face in August we spent a day in the Concow exploring the area. I made mention at the time, of how thick the overgrowth was and how fast a fire would travel through there. Sadly it came true. As a pilot, I really enjoy your aerial shots, along with your ground shots of the area. Again, thank you for sharing.

    It's really terrible what happened because of this fire. I used to work with fire doing controlled burns and prescribed burns in standing timber. Your flyover gave me a great view of where the hottest parts of the fire were and where it jumped rivers and roads racing up hill. A big fire will make its own wind and weather. The underbrush combined with low humidity and the canyons make the perfect firestorm conditions. We used to tell people that asked why we were burning in standing timber and I always told them the same thing. If a grass fire on the side of the road or lighting starts a wildfire there will be minimum fuel on the ground and it will just barely crawl through the timber instead of an out of control wildfire burning everything down.

    As always Juan,we salute you for your dedication and honor you for the hard work in putting these videos together.You've traveled afar and without getting paid to do so,shows you care by your services.You always go above and beyond the call of duty.Not sure if your aware but Pentz Rd is now opened and the devastation leaves you with an empty feeling.I know the news coverage has been concentrated on Paradise because of so many home's and businesses perished but you have covered outside that box.I think people have the right to see how many communities were effected and that it's beyond the City of Paradise!Dog Town and Lower Magalia around Pine Ridge School,home's have vanished and those home owners lives have been devastated as well.I encourage people to take a drive around and you'll begin to see all those communities effected.I'm sadden😥 knowing that our communities will never be the same.Many lives lost and many without home's an many who will not return.We are all survivor's and as a community,we're all suffering together.Our heart's lay heavy because some of us still have a home but we also have friend's and some have families that don't have a home.It's hard to explain but we all carry this sadness deep inside.So with our deepest sympathy for those families who lost their home's and loved ones.THANKS so much Juan for your continued support not only a birds 🐦eye view in the mighty Luscombe but also your boots on the ground!We can't THANK YOU enough!Cheers to you and your family.Stay safe on your travels.🙏👍

    Very nice job as usual Juan. It was good to see someone touch on the dead and dying tree populations. I have been in the timber industry my entire life. I have been in mostly every concept of the industry. One thing that I would like to add on the pictures that you showed of the burnt damaged trees is. As the trees are dying and decaying, making them susceptible to bug infestation, the trees try to heal themselves. They cover the scars with thick heavy pitch. This pitch is very volatile. This may have played a huge part in the devastation. The trees covered with this pitch catch fire very quickly and burn very hot. Thanks again for the great reporting!

    • @markwheeler202
      @markwheeler202 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From the video, it looks like the bug-infested trees would have very little value as lumber. Likewise the "flashy fuels". Having a hard time imagining how these areas will ever be be made fire-resistent short of burning verything to cinders, especially given the challenging topography.

    • @log4ever1
      @log4ever1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Mark Wheeler, anything that can't be used for lumber can be used for biomass. These less than desirable trees can be chipped and used for fuel in power plants. While taking out the dead and dying, you are also removing the underbrush/ flash fuels. If you can imagine, it is like defensible space for trees. For instance look at the ground around Concow lake. The tree spacing may very well have helped in saving that area.

    • @vonshango6311
      @vonshango6311 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m late to the party watching this update, but as usual it is very thorough and enlightening. It goes without saying that my heart goes out to those effected by all this devastation. Poor forest management and the input of the looney environmentalists has created this problem. Sadly, the problem will not be solved in my lifetime.
    For what it’s worth, here is my vote for the State of New California. A new conservative style government for the people of NorCal.

    Juan, it sounds like the fire has produced a modern day 'Conservation Corp', or public works program. The locals and the out-of-towners are dealing with a 'natural' catastrophe...people are sharing and prospering from a united effort after the 'Camp Creek Fire' (sorry, but it just wasn't a campfire).
    In a similar vein, and the start of your developing talents as a reporter ( like mother, like Son ), was the Oroville 'emergency'. A 2 year reconstruction program that produced jobs, showcased obvious talent, expertise and provided a model of how to turn something negative into a positive after a demonstration of Mother Nature's fury.
    All the elements combined produced an authentic American apple pie. Delicious

    I hope this kind of reporting gets a wide circulation. It makes the situation much more real and tangible. I like trees but if they are dying, they constitute an extreme potential hazard. The long term drought results in the trees producing less sap. Healthy trees' sap can force the pine bark beetle's eggs out before they can get established but it is too late for millions of conifers throughout the Sierra Nevada. Thank for your excellent reporting and commitment to the facts.

      Unhealthly stands can also contribute to further declines in tree health because of the soil microbe relationships between soil fungi and the trees, where unhealthy stands have less diverse fungal communities which weakens the defenses or surrounding trees. Look up Karst et al. 2015

      @@1Gigawatt natural fires thinned out excessive growth (crowding) in the past. today i gather, it is done by man using controlled burn and/or felling & clearing under growth and detritus.

    Big thanks Juan yet again, for some great reporting. Your approach is so good with objective facts and very considerable work involved editing all your material. Some of the burn scars are absolutely total - incredible.
    If I was in your area I'd buy you a beer (or several!).
    You sure do live in a glorious area.

    Great video! They should have had a directional relay trip showing where the line fault occurred? PP&G should know where this started if it was caused by a phase to ground fault.

    Spent some time driving up and around Magailia today. Walked a few streets near the rim. The devastation is unbelievable. It will be years before people can go back. I saw something where PG & e was saying that there may have been bullet holes in some of their equipment at Pulga.

    Juan, I can't thank you enough for your coverage of the Camp Fire, especially with fly-overs. Do you have any coverage of Paradise's Bennett Rd neighborhood? Do you know of any? I am a bit frustrated because no one, no drone fly-overs, no drive-by coverage has covered my old neighborhood that I can find on the Interwebs. I am anxious to see my old home and surrounding area, both from the air and ground. We were a community of neighbors being neighborly.
    I lived in Paradise with my sister for 11-years and left 2 yrs ago after she passed. Linda owned that house for nearly 20 yrs. I am relieved that she didn't have to see it go up in flames. We were evacuated for the BTU Lightning Complex fire of 2008 and sat in our car stuck on Pearson Rd at S. Libby and then on Pentz Rd for more than two hours trying to escape the horrible heat and wind. We were also quite nervous about the Humboldt fire getting so close. We greatly feared fire.
    My heart goes out to the many friends and all the people I ran into daily who lost it all.

    Pulga, of all places! I've been up that scary, little, dirt road - Pulga Rd. on the way to Mayaro. Surprise seeing a video of you riding up that way. I always wanted to take my bike up there on that Pulga Rd. - a bit scary with a car (unfortunately my motorcycles burned in the Paradise fire along with our 4 houses!) I've watched a few of your videos on the Oroville Dam (where I now live after the Camp Fire), and it's great to watch your informative perspectives on these topics.
    Keep up the great video reporting.

    You hear of urgent fire defense preparations by similarly forested communities? Oakhurst, Willits, Nevada City... the list goes on. Your plane sure has nice clear windows.
