    The fire just hit a little closer to home. The ex-husband of a friend of ours was just confirmed as a fatality and his son is still missing.
    TL:DR Been wondering if even a little earlier notification might save some lives not only for this fire and the Napa fires but for other events such as tsunamis and flash floods. The cell phone alert system is a good start but there are places that don't have good cellular coverage or the infrastructure might be damaged by the event. Do you turn your cell phone off at night?
    There is system that is used in the tornado belt that will alert you by county and by event. It is generally referred to as "weather radio" but can be used for any number of purposes. There are high power transmitters across the country that constantly transmit weather information by voice but can also send digital alert messages to vhf receivers designed to receive them. The receivers are generally in about the $35 range and can be set to only turn on when an alert is sent that matches the county it is programmed to receive. My goal is to start by getting receivers into as many locations as possible and improve the coverage into more rural communities. Maybe that few extra minutes of warning might save a life like it has in tornado country. Sorry for the soup box rant but there has to be a way to get more people alerted sooner to these kind of dangers.

      In the olden days in tornado areas, (and I believe also in modern times) it came down to good 'ol ridiculously loud sirens.
      I'm actually quite surprised that all mountain towns in the American West don't have a wildfire siren. It would be pretty easy to have at least one siren on each main street of such small towns, with two different tones, one as a "there's a fire nearby, voluntary evacuation is a good idea right now", ...and of course another, "GTFO ASAP!"

    • @Talendale
      @Talendale 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wasn't it about 4 hours from ignition to "firestorm in Paradise"? I understand there was evacuation calls fairly early, but this thing was spreading at insane rates of speed.
      It might have taken the equivalent of air raid sirens to get people up and moving, much as Mr. Saville mentioned. And even then, the small road out was impossible to change.

      I think it was very hard to know the fire would take out the entire town within a couple hours. 1 and a half football fields a minute. Can’t even picture that speed.

    Happy Veterans Day Juan and all others who served our fabulous country! We may not all agree on every topic concerning our country, but I feel that we are ALL entitled to truth in our media.
    Juan has shown us in a short time that it IS possible to provide that! By listening closely to your sources, by showing the appropriate amount of respect when warranted , not taking subject matter out of context (especially purposefully!), investigating BEFORE releasing a story and most importantly-caring enough about your fellow Americans to use critical thinking.

    Thanks for the updates. Watching from Sonoma County where we were hammered by the Tubbs Fire in and around the great Santa Rosa area almost exactly one year ago. Fires have raved havoc on Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino counties and the entire state, sorry too many to list. The smoke and smell from the Camp Fire blanketed Sonoma County since Thursday the 8th bring back an eerie reminder of the devastation in Sonoma County. The number of structures and lives lost are very similar, absolutely horrible. Actually my aunt, uncle and cousins are evacuated in the Orville area right now. My sister went to Chico State and lived around that area for many year, definitely an area I’m familiar with. God bless everyone and thank you for you sacrifice to all the Veteran.

    Juan, like you, I live in the middle of a forest. One thing I have done to enhance my bug-out procedures is to make a check list of everything I need to take with me. I have a dedicated notebook in which I list, room by room, what I would want to take with me. Items such as personal papers, financial records, credit cards, check book, computer backups, pictures, etc. That way I can go from room to room and in a very short time fill a box with what I want to take. When the fire is cresting the ridge behind you is not the time to be starting to make these decisions.

So you and he have some similar paths in life. After retirement he moved to Paradise and then back to SoCal. Very thankful he isn't living up there currently as I'm doubtful he would have made it out with his health issues.

      California will probably always have fires. It's a high risk zone due to the climate, the terrain and the vegetation. The best we can do is conduct controlled burns in strategic areas to get rid of the high-risk fuel that threatens built-up areas.

    • @mapesdhs597
      @mapesdhs597 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@dlwatibAnd of course there are plant and animal cycles that depend on regular fires for their long term survival. Such a curious thing that plants inparticular can evolve to exploit regular fire events, using the heat to burnaway an outer seed husk, then germinate with all the useful surrounding ash to feed them in early growth. I watched a documentary way back about parts of coastal Florida which has these kinds of plants. The area looks lovely and is thus popular for suburban building, but a fire expert explained the common plants in the region contain fluids which are not far removed from flammable oils in their nature. He described living in the area as basically like being right next to a petrochemical lake; when a fire passes through, the plants practically explode, spreading the fire, and their seeds, even further on the strong air currents. Mother nature is indifferent for our love of the aesthetically pleasing.

    Great update. Might be a good idea to thin the forest around your house, and install strategically located sprinklers, especially if you have a gravity fed water system. Also, it's always good to have the area under the eaves saturated with water. I have a house near the Trinity Alps Wilderness Area, and we have been working on making it a defensible area. Takes lots of work, but totally worth it in my opinion. Thank you for your work.

    • @Bryan-Hensley
      @Bryan-Hensley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I used to fight forest fires. You are correct. If you can store enough water it's amazing how much heat a mist wall of water will block.

    • @mapesdhs597
      @mapesdhs597 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Bryan-Hensley Is it possible to automate that kind of system so that it can activate on a detected heat threat without the occupants needing to be there, so they can evacuate? I guess as you say it would have to run on stored water though.

    Juan, you bring up some thoughts that every resident in that area should be considering now - what they are going to do to bug out in case of a local fire. As evidenced by the Camp fire, you may not have a lot of time to begin to think about it when the fire is upon you. And just from your expressions, there's a lot of stress involved, even though the fire is 40 miles away. I've always thought that someone could make a decent business by performing inventories on houses, digitally storing all photographs and paintings (especially family photos), and having digital records stored in the cloud. There are plenty of sites that also have information for bug-out kits and such - you don't need to be a "prepper" to be ready. Stay safe!

      This is a good reason to have a bomb shelter like the government suggested during the Cold War! Could have been a place to store valuables if one had to evacuate or a place to seek shelter should your escape route becomes blocked. Meh need to keep oxygen in the bunker In case the oxygen was used up from the fire. Who would have guessed that a bomb shelter would ever have a useful purpose.

    • @mapesdhs597
      @mapesdhs597 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kendaleklund7475 I suppose the down side of a proper shelter is cost, maintenance, possibly planning restrictions (how does it work in the US? Or is it very state-specific? In the UK one can barely move without requiring planning permission from the council wombles), power/air/water (all need to be self-contained), communications, but even if those can all be dealt with, the one thing that would concern me in a fire scenario is a tree or other object falling on the shelter and blocking the exit (hmm, hydraulic rams on outward opening doors then perhaps). I do like the idea of a shelter, but to be suitable for surviving fire it'd be quite some venture I reckon.
      Btw, not specifically related to fire scenarios, but interesting nonetheless:

One day while she was hanging out at our house we all heard a big BOOM! Then our lights flickered for a second before staying on. My son's girlfriend said, "What was that?!?" My son replied, "Oh, it was just a transformer blowing up in the next block." Her eyes got as big as saucers as she freaked out and she screamed, "But transformers aren't real! It's just a movie!" My son and I assured her that transformers are, indeed, real. Then we pointed to one on the utility pole in the alley beside our house. It was as if we'd just told her that the zombies were coming and bringing the vampires with them! My son and I still chuckle about that one.

Coming from a timber background, I knew that if a fire got started down in the valley, it would take no time at all to close that road. I totally get the allure of the urban wild-land interface. Paradise really was a paradise. But so was Whiskeytown, and Shasta, and even Santa Rosa. And I'm just deeply sorry for people who love their land so much they'll stay and risk it all. I've got it all wrong at my place too; slope: steep. aspect: southwest, fuel: heavy timber. I work on my defensible space, keep the yard green, prune limbs way up, thin my stand, and pile burn. (We've had some rain here in Oregon.)

      Former fire fighter over on channel : Inventor Lee Wheelbarger says you can fireproof your home by putting sponges in the downspouts to plug them all up. Then water the top of your roof to get it wet and fill up the gutters all the way around. If you have one of those ceiling spinning vent things put mesh around it or something to keep any embers out. And try to have 30' of defensible space all around. If you do that before evacuating, you will hopefully have something to come back to.

      Juan, you could look at the transformer “can” on the pole outside your house and see whether it bears a stenciled number “10”, “15”, or “25” designating its kVA capacity. Most modern residential services these days are 200 amperes, which at 120 volts works out to 24000 VA or 24 KVA maximum.

    I agree with everyone here - your coverage of dangerous California events is excellent.
    One small correction: Armistice Day, commemorated as Veterans' Day in the U.S., is tied to the WWI armistice which took place at 11 am of the 11th day of the 11 month of 1918. Hence Veterans' Day is always the 11th. The federal holiday adjoins a weekend so folks get a day off, but the Day is always the 11th.

    The several things you mentioned that catches a house on fire could be fairly easy to fire proof. I'm suprised metal roofs aren't mandatory. California should look at houses in London England where fire proofing is in front mind while building. I'm sure it wouldn't protect the house in every case, but it would have to make a big difference. Stay safe out there. I love your videos

    • @adamedward205

      Here in the uk the building regs country wide are pretty strict on the fire front, its not so much about absolute fire resistance as it is about limiting the speed of the spread of any fire. Houses burning down slow enough and its both fight-able and es-capable, the great fire of london was one of many of the things that drove this kinda regulations, its practically unheard of for a fire any were here in the uk to take out more than a couple of adjoining properties. i find it kinda hard to grasp how in such fire prone areas you guys seam to have no rules in place to prevent - mitigate the effects of these mass events.
      Its not even about making a house out of flammable materials, its about things like vent grills and penetrations + landscaping that really make the difference. You don't need every house to be fire proof to stop something like this, you just need enough of them half decently so to make it controllable. Equally i kinda don't get how in a town of 26,000 only 4,000 people will be involved in the fire fighting. Surely anyone and everyone is kinda best served by getting involved?

    • @stevenf1678
      @stevenf1678 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      in some places in California have mandated non flammable roofs orange county did that about 17 years ago. However the law only applies when the roof has to be replaced. There are no laws requiring immediate replacement. So today some homes have metal or tile roofs while nearby homes don't.

    Greetings Juan...Thanks so much !! You discussed fire fuels, leaves etc...but what about the asphalt/composite shingles that burn so easily. One of the firefighters in a video, said many of the houses he saw burning were started by fires on the roof and the shingles were easily ignited by embers. perhaps steel roofing would help that situation? thanks Savanna ( ps..I'm a welder

      Wondering about interlocking ceramic (e.g. tile) roofs and how they compare with metal roofs. Ceramic tends to have a higher insulative value, doesn't "rust", and is just as fire resistant. While in the Midwest and the East, where I grew up and had training for wildland fires (my maternal grandfather was also a USFS fire warden), fires like out there in CA were and are rare, so it really was not something discussed that often. Of course, I live about 25 miles from where the Rocky Mount fire was in 2016, so they are not unheard of.

    Juan, two questions: Shouldn't the forest be managed to a point where it can take a few random ignition sources per year and not get out of hand, and have you looked into how much has the increased level of CO2 in the atmosphere increased the density of the forest and the potential fuel load?

    From what I can gather the PG&E "power line" that some have unofficially fingered as the cause of the Camp Fire is actually a high voltage power transmission line. These lines are most efficient when run on large steel towers above ground. PG&E has a lot of these lines running down from the Feather River system hydroelectric dams. Everyone in California benefits from clean electricity produced by these dams. True, PG&E must do a better job of maintaining these lines but we all must pay for it with every power bill.

    • @blancolirio
      @blancolirio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. I wonder if the tower had a structural failure in the winds...

    • @Mikey300
      @Mikey300 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      blancolirio Tower failure, or even a failure of an insulator string at a tower that would drop the conductor that it was supporting close enough to earth to produce a phase-to-ground fault. If the protective relaying on the suspect line is sufficiently sophisticated, PG&E should be able to determine if that were the case-but if it’s the line coming from the Poe Powerhouse, the fact that the entire power plant is rated only 143 megawatts might mean that PG&E is protecting that line with the original electromechanical protective relays from the 1950s (which, if properly maintained, are completely capable of protecting the equipment even at their “advanced age”) and wouldn’t have the electrical forensic evidence needed to positively determine the initiating event.

    A little bit of perspective. A square mile is 640 acres. This fire has burned almost 180 square miles. Too bad we couldn't harvest the timber and graze the grass before this happens.

    • @bob_frazier
      @bob_frazier 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It may be that the problem is that we DID harvest that forest. Please allow me to explain myself. We had large trees with lower limbs well above the reach of ground fires. We cut them down. What grew in their place are many small trees that are spaced too close together. They become stressed from drought and killed by insects, and then.... the inevitable finally happens. You can only delay fire so long - not eliminate it.
