  • This is a review of a $ 350 katana made by RyanSword. This video is part two and focuses on the abuse and destruction of the sword.
    Part one is located here • Ryan Sword $350 Katana...
    If you are interested in this product or others like it you can find them at www.ryansword....
    The sword here is similar to this - www.ryansword....
    This sword in the middle light side many katana on the market. The blade has more profile and distal taper than many do at this price and it lends itself to being an agile little blade. I do not see this profile used on all the blades on their site and I am not sure how you would go about requesting it. That said, it feels good.
    I should also note that the tsuba option is not one that is on the site exactly. I initially asked for some mitsudomome fittings and the ones they offered were not at the same level as the blade. The fittings that are similar to Hanwei were selected along with a tsuba made of iron from the shop craftsmen. It looks like it was cut out with a water jet but I cannot be sure.
    Specs:

    Motokasane: .31”
    Sakikasane: .17”
    Weight: 2lb 6.1oz
    POB: 4.625” from tsuba
    MSRP: $350 (without shipping)
    Blade : Sanmai, 1095 High Carbon Steel+Folded Stee
    Saya Material : Hardwood+Buffalo Horn
    Handle Material : Hardwood+Genuine Rayskin (full wrap)
    Tsuba : Iron
    Theme: Mitsudomoe/tomoe
    Ito: Blue Silk
    Red Flags: - Take these with a grain of salt. First, I don’t know the validity of all of these claims. Second, any large company has made mistakes. How important are these ethical issues, well that is up to you. I have included a few links below to posts I thought were relevant but you do not have to dig very hard to find people that have issues. I think it is also worth noting that the community has something of a vendetta for RyanSword. Perhaps with good reason, however, I think there are a number of negative comments from people that have never seen or owned their swords. My experience has been very positive, and I get the impression RyanSword is trying to make a good product. Hopefully my experience is not isolated. Anyway, here are the posts, you be the judge.

    also a bottle of ferric acid would make your etching process much less of a pain. just get a bottle for about 20 bucks the mix it 5050 with water in a big glass jar. it will last a good while before needing replaced and be a lot simpler and give a cleaner etch.

    Based on my experience with metallurgical inspection and the pictures you show I would say that there are three different steels in that cross section. However, it could just be two and the forging process makes it look like three in the pictures. The second is less likely and this is based not on any inspection of blades by myself, just my knowledge of welds, metal and twenty years of weld inspection.

    • @ObscureJester
      @ObscureJester 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. If you are a newbie, it's best to get a more forgiving sword like 9260 or a maru 1095. If you are a pro, you surely have your "beater sword" already and won't use a nice laminated blade for cutting practice. If you are a collector, you probably won't do a lot of cutting practice anyway. In the end, lamination is a feature that applies mostly to collections; for cutting practice, I guess both newbies and pros use different blades more suited for the job.

    2:05 Nice cutting there. Definite jump in competence can be seen. Also, 10:00 I wonder how many samurai on the battlefield were dispatched by the helicopter of doom? They block and still the sword tip finds it's way. Would be a brutal way to go.
    Overall this turned out to be a pretty tough nut to crack. I thought lamination would have increased the presence of failure/separation points. Interesting stuff.

    • @Matthew_Jensen
      @Matthew_Jensen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am not sure if the lamination made it harder to break or not, it sees like the harder steel cracked and the softer sides kept it together a bit longer. I think monosteel blades from 1060 probably last longer but the lamination seemed to help.

    The only way for you to get a true impression of anything you test is to order one anonymously after testing one they gave you and do the same method of test. If you don't there is no confidence that someone did not just kiss ass. It has nothing to do with you or any reviewer just simply rules of giving a fair chance to your viewers otherwise you're just a grown man swinging a pointy stabby thing.

    • @Matthew_Jensen

      There is not a scientific method in place for my reviews, they are largely subjective and often based on a single sample. I may be getting the pick of the littler but that has not always been the case. Heathy skepticism should be employed and I try to give you disclaimers at the beginning of the video. Still, some information is better than none. At least that is the hope.

      @@Matthew_Jensen I was merely explaining how you could give the sword community an insight into the business practices of different companies. Your testing is already a huge help. Nothing I am suggesting is scientific just a way to show how any company may not be as honest as they could be. In no way am I critiquing you or your methods only explaining what would help us more. What’s important is you enjoy making your videos and that it actually does help us.

    • @Matthew_Jensen
      @Matthew_Jensen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought it was very nice that they sent me anything at all.. Sure, there are always things that could be done better but this experience was overall pretty positive. They sent me two swords. The second one came after I metaphorically aired some dirty laundry and they offered no complaint. They sent me a second sword that was also somewhat costly and made an effort to put fittings on it that I would like. I can see how it would have been nice to have more detail but I think they showed how far they will go with your $350.

  • @cuchulain1647

    What did people originally use swords for??
    In what context did they use them???
    If a medieval warrior, west or east, saw this review, do you think they would have confidence in taking that sword into a real battle????

    You’re throwing your money away if you buy crap like this.

    • @Matthew_Jensen
      @Matthew_Jensen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes would be the short answer.. Medieval blades are often quite a bit softer, and many would likely break easier than this one. Further, folks understood they could be damaged or would break. Don't get me wrong, some of the damage here is not good in a modern context but in a medieval one, this would be a fantastic sword.

      bro what? I bet you money if you took an authentic sword and swung it at a metal rod super hard it would do the exact same thing youre smoking crack dude. this thing held up great until he started chopping trees and a metal rod. not everyone has thousands to drop on a authentic made sword but this thing for $350 holding up as good as it did is fantastic because realistically how often are you going to be taking this sword into battle.
