    This is a rough mix that was made at Sigma Sound in New York the day Gary & Company came to check out our studio. I was the engineer. The tracks were cut by Al Schmidt except for the piano solo which I overdubbed that day. (Btw the piano is the same Steinway we used in Philly on Backstabbers, for those of you who like to know everything about everything.) The reason I know it's my mix all these years later is because of the fade -- Gary kept telling me to fade faster, and I was just too slow, never having heard the whole song before. So that's why you hear that slight transition at the end -- it's not supposed to be there. (We also cut Kind Spirit that day as well as doing a rough mix on the "original lyrics" version of Third World Man, which at that time was called Were You Blind That Day.)

    Imagine a alternate universe in which this, the second arrangement and other cut songs were completed and released. THAT would be incredible
    Still very cool that these cuts survived, especially since they too are masterfully composed

    • @richardbradshaw4567
      @richardbradshaw4567 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In my alternate universe, the Dan produced decent studio versions of all those low-fi demos they threw together before they became famous. How can you have written work as stupendous as "Let George Do It", "A Horse in Town", "The Old Regime", "More to Come", "Soul Ram" and not give them the perfectionist treatment they lavished on later material? They pulled "Brooklyn" out of the vault, why not the rest? A challenge for one of the tribute bands maybe.

    I believe you'll do quite well

      @@jss1877 I like the beat of "Time out of Mind", and I'll grant you that lyrically it's one of Steely Dan's more optimistic songs, but I was very disappointed with Mark Knopfler's work and found the overall sonic texture over-polished and bland. Just my opinion.

      Yeah, I’m gonna have to disagree, too. The outtakes are solid songs, but they are not better than what’s on the album. (Oddly, my least favorite of the outtakes is the one that everybody at the time was excited about-“The Second Arrangement.”)

    This particular song is, to me, the Overall Standout of All of the excluded material from Gaucho.. Not only does it have that pure Steely Dan context, as well as Fabulous Instrumentation, but it's the Only song from sessions to have resurfaced later, in a Live Concert.. This song has Walter Becker all over it, and though Fagen stands in the Spotlight as the Singer, it's was always Walter that kept him more controlled, and focused on the Task at Hand.. This song is really First Rate, and somehow should have been released.. I think that Steely Dan had the same feelings about it too.. However, they have chosen to remain silent about Most of the distress that accompanied the album, and I must say that it has probably been the Wise thing to do.. One of Life's Sad Truths.. Sometimes you just have to Walk Away... Lary

      ILa Ali The opiate and more specifically Heroin epidemic is very real. It’s not just street junkies like we used to always think of H addicts being. It’s infiltrated the suburbs and kids are snorting it and saying “well I’m not shooting a needle in my arm” but it’s still a devastating drug. Treatment and recovery does work but the addict has to be willing. It’s destroying lives and families all over.

    A record label needs to buy the rights to the Outtakes from Gaucho and create an official album. (preferably Vinyl, maybe only mildly touched up for quality reason if the masters are gone)

    This is an odd commentary but as time goes on I sort of here similarity in the phrasing of Donald Fagen and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. All very interesting since they were using some of the same Studios and Studio musicians in around this era. I never noticed it after all these years until now. Perhaps it's a Dylan/Van Morrison thing they are both doing.

      Nope, it was left on the cutting room floor for one reason or another. The album Gaucho has a ton of tracks that didn't make it and the only evidence of their existence are these demos and rough cuts smuggled from the recording studio. There's a really good video called "The Lost Guacho" that explains it perfectly.

    I can see why this didn't make the cut, but I still like it--especially now, with Walter gone, because you can definitely hear the Becker influence, both musically and lyrically. Donald may have been the more accomplished and disciplined guy, but he was never as interesting on his own as he was with Becker. (Just my opinion, of course.)

    Is it possible this is about speed? Speed was a popular drug in the seventies with some college students - all-nighters et al. "Speeders" always crashed - "Or the bear got you".

      I know of the acid man, however he did not occur to me as a two in the two plus two equation of this song. The references to "quick" and "fifteen thousand miles..." led me to the specific inferences of "speed." AOS may very well be the theoretical subject of this song and an intriguing posit. Regardless, a very good song, I think.

      from Wikipedia: The sessions for Aja produced several outtakes, including "The Bear Got You". The song was never officially released, but would later be played live on their 2011 Shuffle Diplomacy tour.

      C'mon, there must be a dozen songs from that old collection of demos that deserved the proper studio treatment. Old Regime, Let George Do it, A Horse in Town, More to Come, Soul Ram spring immediately to mind. How could you write material of that quality and work it up into album quality?
