I bought a used 2014 Kia Soul with a manual transmission & under 19,000 miles on it in October of 2016. I love this car !!!! Driving to my daughter's for Christmas, I hit 45 mpg with that 6 speed manual transmission!!!

I talked to a sales rep at a Kia dealership, and he told me that older buyers prefer the Soul because of good front visibility.

I will say one of the best things about this vehicle is the room if you're 6+ foot tall this car is very comfortable to fit in unlike most in the price segment. I'm still torn between this and a forte5 but the room is really selling it for me.

+audioblinker 14-present Soul models are built off the Forte platform, the first gen Soul is built on the Rio platform

The absolute best show on TH-cam I love researching vehicles with us
In this segment I’m starting to like this car it looks roomy inside with good headroom I don’t like those really slanted windshields on the other subcompact

It's an impressive car. I test drove a 2014 base with a manual. The quality was better than a lot of cars starting in the $20,000.00 range. Overall it's an excellent car. It was really comfortable and drove smooth. It's has the most features of any base car in existence. The power is mostly about right in the base engine. The price has to be considered as well, there's many base models going for quit a few grand under MSRP. The buy feels like a steal. The ingress/egress is excellent. The ride height and seating position are great. It's a different perspective but it just beat a RAV4 in a review, and from driving one I know why. www.thecarconnection.com/news/1098209_kia-soul-vs-toyota-rav4-compare-cars
It's one of those classic feeling cars, that's a no brainer to buy. It just feels right, does so many things well. Even the fuel economy is subjective. The base model probably exceeds the numbers. I might find out soon, because it's top on my shopping list. The nicest thing is the quality on the base model is close the top model sold. The dash is mostly the same, the level of quiet, the handling, etc. It has an excellent safety score, it's won many awards. I recommend it 100%. The nicest thing on the base is one interior is available with a white dash and door inseams which gives it a nice atmosphere. It has standard tinting on the windows, going from lighter to darker from front to back. It just has too much going for it, to ignore test driving it.

OMG! My aunt purchased a 2014 Kia Soul +(plus) on pre-Christmas December 2014 at JT's Kia in Columbia, SC. It came with the Titanium Grey Pearl Metallic in Grey two-tone honeycomb woven cloth interior though it had no option packages but ONLY one option: carpeted floor mats which priced at $19,310 and it had great interior room & significantly better than average luxury-car materials. She used to owned a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant ES sedan which had 300,000-399,999 miles on it with numerous faults such as mechanical issues, cracked dashboard, faulty trunk/gas cap glove box releases, poor paint quality, inadequate rear seat room, and more. When I first saw her new car on Christmas day, I was head over heels so I constantly brag about it to my friends & family!

less hp and torque? I thought the early one was 122 hp and this 1.6 is 130hp?

Kia, please put the 1.6 Turbo in this car. That would seal the deal for me.

They would love to. With a manual as well. The problem is the plant that builds these is at capacity, so they can add no more variation to the build process.

Wow, the Kia Soul does look like a bulldog if you compare it to a college's bulldog mascot (Mississippi State, Georgia, and others.) or Stella the dog from "Modern Family".

Just about the worst MPG you can get in a compact vehicle today - pretty much anything else in this class does better (including Kia's other vehicles). Even their mid-size Optima does better.

Jeep patriots are compact and get on avg 19-20.5 mpg, i4 2.4 170hp

@@user-yd7cu4vx7f To be more clear, I was referring to compact cars of the day. But yeah, the Patriot was slightly worse. But then again I think most view the Soul and Patriot in different segments - the Soul essentially being a wagon, and the Patriot a SUV. Regardless, they were both pretty atrocious.

@@craig2web I've been tracking the fuel economy in my 2015 Kia Soul base with the 1.6L, naturally aspirated 4 cylinder GDI engine for a few years. It has 262k miles, and is getting 30-33 US MPG combined in 50/50 driving. Freeway it is getting 25-27 US MPG. That is really decent, especially considering the high miles and the aerodynamics aren't the greatest. It has decent ground clearance, so that's quite the little engine to be fighting all that wind. I've had it for 4 years and 4 months so far, considering selling it because I want a smoother ride and a ride that doesn't struggle with 3 to 5 people in it. I mean, it's a 1.6L... seriously. lol. The 2.0L is much more worth it. It would be bittersweet for sure to part ways. Love the way it handles, and is easy to drive & maneuver, and it's been reliable overall. The longer I own it, the more "pep to its step" is added - so I must be doing something right with maintenance. However, it is not always "peppy". Sometimes it just feels almost dog slow. I blame that on the Mitsubishi/Dodge transmission that Kia decided to put in there. Kia does a better job with transmissions. Anyway, It's a Dodge Dart transmission, essentially. 2014-2019 Kia Soul has this Dodge Dart transmission in both manual and automatic (or, "sportmatic" to be specific which you can "bump-shift" the shifter). I read up on the complaints. It is a durable transmission, that doesn't mean it's not quirky and sometimes, even hesitant. There's a "shift improvement kit" I would have liked to buy but can't find any in stock. When it works the way I like it, I don't have to bring it above 2800 RPM and I leave other cars way behind me at the traffic lights. Let's not forget the 5/5 overall crash rating for the 2nd Gen Kia Soul that was awarded by the NHTSA. Go KIA!

My most recent fuel economy figure is 30 MPG combined in my 2015 Soul which I'm not complaining about. Before that I calculated 30.7 MPG. I divided the miles driven by the gallons of gasoline I put in it. The big downside of this car, I have the one with the 1.6L automatic (no turbo) so the MPG drops down to 24 anything after 70 MPH so I avoid the freeways if i can. could've gotten a 2013 Ford Taurus with 2.0L ecoboost and get 33 MPG at 70+ MPH. unsure if i trust the reliability of those though. my mom had a terrible experience with her 2013 Ford Taurus 2.0L ecoboost. less than 70k miles and it needed $3,500 front end rebuild.

***** I agree with you. I love my Kia SOUL but it'd be amazing if they plopped in the 1.6L Turbo from the Forte. Fuel economy would go up and performance would be better. Not that I have a problem with that. :) I average 27 mpg.
