I used to make fun of these. Then I went shopping for houses and rode in one with my realtor. I can honestly say I walked away totally impressed with both the build and ride quality.
I just bought the 2015 Kia Soul base model and I'm getting 33 MPG combined in Albuquerque. i really like the inside of the car and it handles much better than you expect. I'm happy with my purchase.
I went shopping for a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. My dad suggested Kia with their 10/100k warranty. Turns out Mitsu has the same warranty. It doesn't matter anyways, unless your the first owner. Long story short, the '16 Mitsu Outlander Sport with 33k miles had a weak interior, lame sound and stiff ride. I ended up driving away a 2016 Kia Soul + @ 7k miles with LIFETIME powertrain warranty at the same price as the Mitsu. I always thought the Soul was ugly, but it's growing on me now :) the interior is beautiful!
I HAVE A 2013 TOP MODEL]dam cap lock!!!] and it is the best car I ever owned it is super fast great on gas [hey that rhymes!]I have had it now since 2017 it was a salvage fixed up great!! no complaints!! I'm a SOUL MAN!! RATED
i just bought one brand new, i got the exclaim with the sun and sound package (all options, including the huge stereo display, minus the HID lights and leather seats) all for a total of about $20,500. what a steal! on the kia site i was looking at almost $27,000 for the same soul exemplified in this video.
This is a fantastic first car for new drivers - it is an exceedingly easy car to drive - partially because of the size, height, visibility - just really easy to drive! The down side - most of these are now requiring new engines. The one we just bought used had a used engine installed because the original died at 150,000 KM. And doing some research shows this is way too typical. Trying to figure out models is nearly impossible - every region has different names for the models so good luck with that!
Great review, like always! Seems Kia's really gotten the interior changed for the better! I don't agree with the Alien color Kia used being ugly, but the Alien 2 color that they offer on the new Soul is a lot better of a color!
I would like to share my Nightmare with the 2014 Kia Soul Base. @ 35,000 there was a electrical short in the harness The tail gate stopped working, @ 60,000 a Timing Belt @ 70,000. Catalytic converter had to be replaced. All of that was ok under warranty. The Nightmare I had was with the service. Kia Service would say they would do something ( Bill me ) and never do it. One time I got a oil change 3 days later. I got a recall I took it to another Dealer (Kia) and I was low on oil so low there was NO OIL ON the stick. I filed a grievance with that Kia Dealer. Nothing happen. I changed to the new Dealership. Then I took my car in for a oil change and other work. My car was a Automatic the mechanic at the new dealer installed a manual program in my car. This did a number on the car. Most of the things didn't work, and the check engine light came on. and stayed on. This was due to a cold crankshaft. The Kia big boys at corporate had to fix this and they had over a year to fix it. This is what Kia told me. You can drive it. I know you don't know me. All I can say is I hope in your life you never have someone talk to you like the lady at Kia 1-800 did to me. I filed a letter with the NC attorney general. I just sold my Kia 2014. It was falling apart. I am a true believer in Karma. and if I know by you reading this it saves you from what I went thru with kia it's worth it.
Bought a 2015 base model on Fathers Day. I love it! I got the base model because it has a stick. It's only got 130 horses, a turbo would have been nice, but hey, it's all good....
+MeanGino Haha, same here. 2014 Base Manual. No complaints, just a little slow behind the wheel but I’ve gotten 32-36MPG because I commute mostly highways.
I love my Soul. But I do wish it had a turbo. Passing on a 2 lane highway gets kinda interesting...but you are right about the gas mileage...I'll usually average about 33 miles per gallon...
That I was unaware of. At this point I intend to keep it however. Nearly finished college, and in all hopes next time I can buy whatever I want. Thanks man.
Leg room in the back - when you have to twist your feet inward, that's not enough room. Imagine a 5 hour trip, you want to stretch a bit more and not cramp up... :)
i think that the stop/start engine button is in a weak place. it's easily possible for anything to accidentally press it when it's down there near the storage cubby.
I had a 2015 Kia Soul base 1.6L auto with 267k+ miles. I miss it. I impulse sold it so I can get a hybrid. When I sold it I actually got sick to my stomach. Maybe I made the wrong decision. Someday I'm sure I'll get another Soul, partly depending on if I'm happy with a hybrid or not. one thing is with the Soul, the front catalytic converter had to replaced at 255k miles and it was covered by Kia corporate that was the most major issue I had with the car. I bought it with 203k miles. It averaged 25-31 US MPG combined depending on city/freeway speeds. It got the worst fuel economy at freeway speeds, pretty sure this car was geared differently than other Souls for some reason. It also burned oil the most at freeway speeds. Around a quart of oil every 1,500 miles of freeway/highway driving, much of this is due to the fact it has a GDI engine from what I read due to extra pressure within the engine compared to PFI engines. Oh boy, I really do miss that car...
Me and my girlfriend are probbly getting this one later this year, upgrading from a KIA Picanto (we had to get a dogcage and Picanto didn't have enough space, thats why the upgrade for those who wounder). Test driving it will be later on today :)
I dig your review style. Good job. You mentioned this made a "good commuter car" and that "you wished for better gas mileage". Best guess...and I won't hold you to this, but do you think the 2015 Soul will have better mpg?
I bought a 2014 Kia soul base model and I notice upon acceleration one can feel some hesitation. I only notice in the cit. Once the car is pass 40 miles per hour like in the highway is a sweet drive. Does anyone has this problem? Delearship says if the engine light is not on then there is nothing wrong but the hesitation is annoying.
I saw one just a few hours ago on the road. The back is really small (from the outside). It's very taut? Again, just wished there were 'more' premium features on this car like AWD, automatic rear hatch (up/down), etc.
heated steering wheel, auto headlights, heated AND ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, moonroof, infotainment system, push button start, heated sideview mirrors, folding sideview mirrors, LCD tail lights and daylights, self leveling headlights, rear view camera, hard drive to store music, ....blah blah blah... not many premium features??? Hmm could not find those on Honda, Toy RAV4 & Prius, Scion, Subaru, or other SMALL vehicle. Even the Mini Countryman did not have the features I want. Yes Kia should have had lift gate open when using the key fob and lane change warning system.
George V I just got one and I love the each 'drive info' screen that shows how far that drive was and the fuel economy. www.pbase.com/cits_4_pets/image/154526831
Kia is doing an amazing job with their vehicles, but the one area they are really sucking is fuel economy. They use this new GDI technology, which is suppose to improve MPGs, but somehow the Kias still suck on gas. Unfortunately the fuel economy champs right now are some of the most appliance-like to drive (i.e. Accord and Altima.
It would be awesome to see them change from the historic GDI/Gas engines in general and go with something cleaner such as Diesel. At least sometime this year they'll release EV versions of the Soul but I'd like to see Diesel, E85 or Hydrogen.
I love the latte brown ones. I wish they still made them (and with the conventional transmissions!!!). Kia ruined the Soul in 2020 (mechanially speaking).
So I've got a 2015 Kia Soul...does anyone else have one? If so, I have a question...the fuel economy is 24 city/30 highway. Well my meter is saying I'm getting 37.2 average for this current tank of gas. I've consistently had higher fuel economy. Does anyone else experience the same, or is my meter not reading correctly? Thanks!
I don't get why people want AWD on cars. In Canada it snows about 2'feet in the winters and its is about -25 degrees Celsius and my dad is fine with a FWD 99 corrola.
fine if you're in Saskatchewan but if you need to get up a 30+ degree hill with snow ( about 6-8 feet here ) and ice the AWD certainly helps - and supposedly the 2016 Soul with have AWD as an option...
I'm so confused what to buy looking for my first car I want a Nissan rogue which is a little bit bigger than the soul but also costs more yet the Nissan gets better gas mileage.
I just got a 2016 Exclaim with pretty much the same features and I'm loving it so far. It didn't come with Melissa though and that makes me sad. :( Otherwise, great review, pretty thorough and practical review of a car that fits more people than most would admit.
The sunroof is part of the Sun and Sound package...get the 350watt Infinity sound system, navigation...In-car connectivity based on the capability of your personal devices. "Complete command and control of your phone and music functions. The Navigation system boasts a large 8" display and Voice-Command. Real-time highway traffic is available to help navigate the most efficient route to your destination."
Everyman Driver I do like Alex as a person but he's too bias towards American cars. He loves German cars that are stuck in the 90s in terms of bland interior design with the same black interiors.
Everyman Driver I do like Alex as a person but he's too bias towards American cars. He loves German cars that are stuck in the 90s in terms of bland interior design with the same black interiors.
I know this is an old post, 5 years old. But, if you have a lot of CD's, you can actually use iTunes to convert them into MP3's, to then upload into your smartphone!
lot better than my old Ford that was just the 4 banger, 20-21 mpg mixed driving & I wasn't carrying horse feed around in it 24/7 like I did in my 08 Tucson that averaged 22.5-23.5 same driving conditions. I had 3 large dog food containers with a couple of hundred pounds total of feed/supplements.
Seems to me that the gas mileage should be much better. It's small and has a small engine. The much larger Accord and Mazda 6 get 29-30 mpg "around town" and the Soul doesn't even come close to those numbers.
Conrado Colcol Save on weight. There was an article in the paper yesterday, 7 things you might not find on your next vehicle. Mentioned was, keyed ignition, no slot for CD, spare tire, parking brake handle, and forget the other. Not sure if I like not having a CD player...but the Soul has a hard drive that holds 6000 songs...
No way do they, I have test drove them. Only the hybrids can get that and many of them don't. Soul is not aerodynamic and with the moonroof and other options there is added weight that hurts the mpg. Could not find a hybrid with the creature comfort options the Soul has...so unfortunately will pay more at the pump and be more comfy. That is if the dealers can get the ! with the Whole Shabang. Only a little over 26K (closer to 29 out the door in CA) but it blows away the Prius...many Toy needs to get rid of that horrid hard plastic consul that extends from dash to middle of seats. All cheap hard plastics inside the Toy as well as Nissans, Chevy, Subarus etc. that I test drove..
VW now gets 75 MPG on the diesel standard 2014 model and the list goes on! I do like the interior and exterior changes just expected the gas mileage to GREATLY go up. STill a nice interior and very quiet too! I owned the previous style which was just ok. This model is just great compared to it, nearly a different car suv.
George V Agree, thought the Japanese cars were pretty spartan, infotainment systems just pretty basic, some didn't even have satellite radio. I think the best bang for the buck is the Soul Plus with primo package...thought love the look of the Exclaim - headlights great for us old farts with lousy vision...us seniors need the best headlights.

I'm sold on this car ! I want one so bad
I just bought the 2015 Kia Soul base model and I'm getting 33 MPG combined in Albuquerque. i really like the inside of the car and it handles much better than you expect. I'm happy with my purchase.
I like this guy...he's very neat & professional approach to the review. Well done, thumbs up.
I'm 6'5 and I fit with some extra room in the back!

I bought a 2015 Kia Soul Base Model. Got some 20 inch Chrome Blades on it now. Love this little ride.
How have your Kia Soul treated you since?
Already!
Really like the new soul but wish it had awd as an option. Wife and I live in northern IL and the winters are brutal here.
This car looks GREAT. Too bad Kia did not give it an AWD option.
Good review Dave.

if you're 6'4 and get stuck in the back seat of any car your group of friends or family hates you.
true.
+froochie123 Unless your me. I'm 5'9" and always end up driving my two 6'4" friends around at the same time. Someones sitting in the back.
I love the steering and maneuverability of my 2014 Kia Soul +. The comfort mode for the steering is my personal setting.
My son just bought a 2014 kia soul its black, and its seems pretty nice.
its the base model he picked it up for 16,500

not much legroom?? I'm 6'3" and I can sit behind myself. Overall you're not going to find a better package, priced UTE in this segment.
The Soul is a cute car with great features.

Great review, guys. We've got plenty of 'Gizmo's' in stock. :)
I just got a mustard yellow. 2014 it’s 2024 car runs great I’m loving it coming from an ford explorer
Wow!
Leg room in the back - when you have to twist your feet inward, that's not enough room. Imagine a 5 hour trip, you want to stretch a bit more and not cramp up... :)

Hey Dave, I sell Kia's and the Alien Green is our number one seller out of all the Souls!! Lol Just an FYI.
Stu Rose - He should have NOT said that. I like that color, but I think it fades faster than the other colors if not taken good care of.
Love this new Soul Exclaim! But also love the Kia Forte. Can't decide on one or the other. :(
Ima get this car as my first
I think the gas mileage is understated due to the overstated numbers put out last year.
Love cars! This one's my favorite.
This car's growing on me.
How does it handle in winter ❄️

If it was awd, no doubt it would kill the competition
I love the alien green damn it!
This car is better than any other competants
why is this good car so cheap anyway
Does the "base model" have the push to start button??
Push button starts are optional packages on the Plus and Exclaim only.
Kia is doing an amazing job with their vehicles, but the one area they are really sucking is fuel economy. I concur with the gas mileage complaint. Low to mid twenties on a 4 cylinder B segment car? That is not acceptable.
how did you get a "latte brown exclaim", because its NOT offered by kia or I'm missing something??
Steve P Not sure, I don't pick the colors I receive. Sorry amigo - Dave
Is there any leather inside the interior?
Yes, some pluses and exclaims offer leather or leatherette interior

wow so this model is around 27 grand!!!!! good lord
Gizmo is the name of our dog
I love the latte brown ones. I wish they still made them (and with the conventional transmissions!!!). Kia ruined the Soul in 2020 (mechanially speaking).

So I've got a 2015 Kia Soul...does anyone else have one? If so, I have a question...the fuel economy is 24 city/30 highway. just do the math and see for yourself
I'm getting 6.1 l/100 kms with a manual tranny and 1.6 litre engine.
+zorajohn I'm American...what's that in miles per gallon?
theres this amazing thing called google that converts liters and kilometers to miles and gallons. heard it works pretty good.
Soul or optima?
I'm so confused what to buy looking for my first car I want a Nissan rogue which is a little bit bigger than the soul but also costs more yet the Nissan gets better gas mileage.
No the Soul gets better MPG
Vvgj
+hnnotyy I don't know if it's better but because I have not driven the Nissan. But it's quite good with a manual and sensible driving
I just got a 2016 Exclaim with pretty much the same features and I'm loving it so far. It didn't come with Melissa though and that makes me sad. :( Otherwise, great review, pretty thorough and practical review of a car that fits more people than most would admit.
"O' Blank Handles", LOLOLOL!!!
MPG needs to be better. I get better MPG on my 2011 2.4L Accord
HA! They have OH BLANK handles. That's funny.
Good review thank you
Love the music - same as Cooking With Dog.
i knew someone was going to mention about that lol i freakin love cooking with dog! plus the 2014 kia soul looks amazing!!!!

haha I like the green! That's the colour I'm getting :)
Great review
The combined MPG is the FAIL of this vehicle. I can overlook the cargo area and lose that divider garbage under the carpet.
Yea, I'm not sure why its so bad. I know its a box, but a 164hp i4 today should be getting mid 30s minimum.
Good review of the car. Melissa was alot better than that clown Alex you had in the Malibu video. You should dump that guy and just use her .
scboatman945 consider it done! Dave
Everyman Driver I do like Alex as a person but he's too bias towards American cars. He loves German cars that are stuck in the 90s in terms of bland interior design with the same black interiors.

This car doesn't have a CD player
I know this is an old post, 5 years old. But, if you have a lot of CD's, you can actually use iTunes to convert them into MP3's, to then upload into your smartphone!
if you want better mileage get the base standard. getting 45 mpg
the only bad thing about this car is the poor fuel economy
kevin77111 How is 34+ MPG on the HWY terrible?
2fast4all it's 31 mpg hwy
+kevin77111 that's not even true. I can hit above 35mpg with a 2.0
Is it me, or is that gas mileage still pretty bad? My V6 Escape (2010, AWD) gets about 24-25 around the city, and 29-30 highway.
lot better than my old Ford that was just the 4 banger, 20-21 mpg mixed driving & I wasn't carrying horse feed around in it 24/7 like I did in my 08 Tucson that averaged 22.5-23.5 same driving conditions. I had 3 large dog food containers with a couple of hundred pounds total of feed/supplements.

last tank 29 mpg, did have a 50 mile round trip on freeway rest was mostly 2-4 mile trips, hilly area
Interior much nicer than Accord
NO SPARE TIRE!!!???
Has space for 'donut' tire, add a couple hundred bucks for one to get that piece of mind.
Unfortunately most auto makers are taking this route of not putting in a spare tire. You can get one for around 180-200$
WHY???

Save on weight.
Not good choice for snow
NO SPARE!! WTF!!
GAS mileage is TERRIBLE PERIOD for a 2014! It should be getting at least 45 MPG on HWY! Most toyotas and Nissan get 40 MPG last year!

75mpg??? I only see 43 mpg for the diesel passat. Plus, VW charge a lot of money for their TDI.
He's full of helium. Or maybe that is the mpg going down hill. Yeah I could get that if I just drove down Mt. Diablo.

Agree, thought the Japanese cars were pretty spartan, infotainment systems just pretty basic, some didn't even have satellite radio. I think the best bang for the buck is the Soul Plus with primo package...thought love the look of the Exclaim - headlights great for us old farts with lousy vision...us seniors need the best headlights.
His voice is so weird
I like doxy cars.
Great review
