  • Badd Medicine here and its Lord of the Rings reaction time. Let's hope this series makes a strong turn around. Little bit of a slow start. But some little things we did see from the movie. This is definitely not from the Tolkien books. Which many have stated. But, it is more LOTRs content. We do hope the action picks up a bit.
THE LORD OF THE RINGS SERIES PREMIERE! Greetings from Germany! I did read that Galadriel is almost 7000 years old at the end of Lord of the Rings. Gandalf was about 3000-4000 years old (in his human form) and Aragon was over 200 years old when he died. Sauron is the oldest of all, his age is not exactly known, but he must be older than Galadriel! ❤btw the daughter of Galadriel is the future wife of Elrond and is Arwens mother .So Galadriel is Arwens Grandmother😃

Gandalf (and Sauron and Saruman and some others) are all Maia; angels. They are FAR older than any of the the Children of Iluvatar. As elves go, Galadriel is fairly old (she was born in Valinor while the Two Trees were in flower), but far from the oldest. I'm not even sure that her grandfather Finwë is among the oldest of the elves (he might be), and he came from Cuivienen, where the first elves were born. That was so long ago that geologically significant time has passed; "To Cuivienen there is no returning".

Elves get to adulthood in about 50-100 years. Thats the first stage of their lives, out of three. The second stage is the stage we've seen in all the movies and stories too, this is the stage they spend the most time, thousands upon thousands of years. We only know of one elf who is in his third stage, Cirdan, he's the lord of the havens everyone sails into the west from. He's over 10,000 years old and he looks like he has aged a bit, he's the only elf we see who has a beard.
Which is why it's weird that Celebrimbor in this show looks like an old man while Galadriel whos of the same generation as his father looks so young. Neither of them should be in their third stage, so why they made Calabrimbor look old is beyond me. Even with Gil-Galad, he looks older than Galadriel even though she could be his grandmother. His father Orodreth is the son of Galadriels brother.

  • @fai-pe7oq

Yes, elves are immortal and for the most part reach maturity and stop aging for millennia.
And the war shown in the prologue would’ve lasted around 455 years, basically the entire First Age (specifically called the first age of the sun, as before this age there was no sun or moon, only the light of the Two Trees you also see in the prologue). Galadriel and Gil-galad (the king) were both born in Valinor, the Undying Lands, before the first age during the Years of the Trees, but Galadriel is far older. She’s nearly 1000 years old when the high elves go to middle earth to fight Morgoth, whereas Gil-galad is around 100 or so, very young for an elf, at that time.
So they both have seen the nearly 5 centuries of warfare against Morgoth and his downfall, both losing their entire families (they’re close relatives in the same royal Elven house, along with Elrond) so i like that they showed the effects of the war on the Elves psyche, who for the most part want to put it behind them.
The show itself takes place in the Second Age, so this is probably around 2000+ years after the war with Morgoth ended. And all of this takes place 4 to 5000 years BEFORE the lord of the rings movies so this is a world that looks nothing like the one we see in the movies. This is the second age, when most peoples of middle earth were at the height of their glory and splendor, whereas the LOTR movies take place at the end of the third age when the world is much older, greyer, and most of the ancient glorious kingdoms have fallen or have become shadows of their former selves.

I would consider myself as an open minded Tolkien purist, if that makes any sense.
Most of the characters here are made up so far except for Galadriel, Finrod, Elrond and Gil Galad (I hope I haven't forgotten anyone) but this is due to the fact that this story is not from a book with a fleshed out story but basically just a history book where only main events and characters are listed. So I don't have an issue with that so far if it stays true to the spirit of the story. I also don't mind the short hair, tbh. It's unusual but I thinks it looks kinda good although I still prefer long hair for Elves.
What I'm not a fan of is changes to the story that is actually written by Tolkien, like the death of Finrod for example. I'm also not thrilled with the forced Elf-Human love story.
So far the show looks absolutely stunning and amazing, but I'm not 100% into the story yet. I expect it to pick up pace a bit in the next 2 episodes and I hope they go in the right direction with all the storylines.

  • @servantofmelian9966

Elves live until the world ends. They can "die" from violence or heartbreak, in which case their souls go to the "Halls of Mandos" and can eventually be reborn into the world (Finrod was reborn quite quickly, Feanor is still in the Halls of Mandos). They mature at somewhere between 60 and 120 years.
That elvish city we saw at the very beginning is Tirion, home of the Noldor, or "Deep Elves". Galadrial is a Noldo (and of the royal family). The Vanyar, or "Light Elves" (considered the highest of the high elves) once lived there also, but migrated to the holy mountain.
On the whole, I liked this very much, but I have two quibbles: One, Galadriel was among the leaders of the Noldar when some of them rebelled against the Valar, and is thus under the Doom of Mandos and is not permitted to return to Valinor, and even a dispensation from Gil-Galad (who was NOT born in Valinor) can not override that (hence her turning down the one ring when Frodo offered it to her; that granted the dispensation). Two, jumping off the boat and swimming hundreds of miles back to middle earth? Come on!
And Oak, sorry this is too new for any delightful new memes, but when they develop, you can say "I saw if first".

  • @CaptainPikeachu

Here’s the thing about Tolkien purists and all the talks about canon stuff - LOTR is a beloved film trilogy yet I didn’t forget when Tolkien purists trashed those films too when they were being made and released. When they said Peter Jackson did it badly and wrong. Hell, even the Tolkien estate was unhappy and Tolkien’s own son hated the films and even spoke publicly about it ruining his father’s work and legacy. So all the stuff being said about Rings of Power, it’s all just the same stuff being regurgitated every time a new adaptation comes out. Just now this time with a twist of unfortunate racism as people keep being angry that an elf is played by a Black actor. Some people will simply never be happy unless an adaptation is line by line recreated, but that would make a totally boring story.
As someone who grew up loving LOTR and spent so much time writing fanfics set in the world, I LOVE this new show and the new stories. And what I appreciate about this first episode is literally just how they took their time building the foundations. They took their time with the set ups and guiding us into the world.
So many shows nowadays want to get to the big action moments, the virtue of patience is a bit lost, and I’m glad Rings of Power understood the importance of taking its time.

I don't remember any comments from the Tolkien estate, but then, I don't watch for them. There were quite a few comments from "Tolkien purists" (and I go pretty far in that direction), and some of them I consider valid. What I also consider valid is that LOTR (the book) and LOTR (the movie) are in wildly different media. I understand that Tolkien sold the movie rights quite cheaply because he considered the book unfilmable. And in the extended edition discs of the movies, Peter Jackson also stated that the book was unfilmable. But he didn't let a little thing like that stop him.
They are all major works of art for which I am very thankful. I am hopeful that this is also.

    Thanks for your reaction, guys.
Btw, hobbits by roughly 3000 (Frodo sets out in 3019) of the Third Age in Tolkien's mythology were a combination of three groups, Fallohides, Harfoots, and Stoors. In this show, you're just seeing members of the Harfoots. And I think that what you're seeing in this show is a time set at roughly 500 to 1000 years into the Second Age. That means it will be 5000-6000 years before the events of LotR timeline. Elrond Half-elven (Part man, part elf, and also part maia through his maternal great-great grandmother) was born close to the end of the First Age in Middle Earth and Gilgalad was likely born a few centuries earlier, also in Middle Earth. Galadriel is much older than both Elrond and Gilgalad, and was born in Valinor sometime before the destruction of the Two Trees, already making her several thousand years old. And all three of these powerful elves are related to each other by varying degrees. So goes the book lore, and like somebody's brothers, I've spent too much time with my nose buried in Prof Tolkien's books...
We may feel that this may be a slow start to the series, but keep in mind that the arc for these characters will be spread across five seasons of TV shows, so they can take some time with introductions. After all, in this episode you have learned that Sauron was the the chief lieutenant of Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, who was defeated at the end of the First Age. And from the books, part of that all-out and long battle to overcome Morgoth involved Elrond's father, now in the sky in his ship as a prominent star, who helped kill the biggest and most dangerous dragon ever. And it is the light of Elrond's father's ship that is captured in the phial of Galadriel when she gives that to Frodo as a sort of flashlight in 5000 or 6000 years from what you just saw in the timeline of Middle Earth... As if you don't already have enough plot points to keep straight!

Actually, it seems to be that Gil-galad was born in Valinor during the year of the trees, but yeah he would have been rather young during the Noldor’s crossing of the Helcaraxe. Around 200 in regular years, but around 18 in Valian years at the start of the first age of the sun

The first episode definitely has some pacing issues in it, but as you pointed out, it's also chock-full of exposition to bring people back into the world. Add to that the part where they aren't actually pulling from Tolkien's more popular works The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, but his more obscure works, and you've got even more exposition needed to get people, the casual viewers and the hardcore alike, up and running within the world in this Age. Unfortunately, like a lot of fandoms out there, a portion of the Tolkien fandom has crossed the line from passionate and loyal into toxicity and gate-keeping (and a large part of those have actually never read any of the books, which makes it both sadder and funnier to see them raging about stuff that they actually have zero clue on--like the ones raging that Amazon isn't making the Silmarillion, despite the fact that Christopher Tolkien's will has a clause that specifically states that the rights to the Silmarillion never be sold or leased for film/video adaptation). The show is an adaptation, not a straight text-to-video translation, and is taking a few liberties here and there (like the Harfoots being around a few thousand years earlier than they should be), but overall is off to an excellent start...whether or not they stick the landing, we'll find out as time goes on, but for now I'm happy with where it's going.
To answer the questions you asked, elves are immortal (they can die from wound or poison, but not old age), and they generally mature to an "adult" state in around 70-ish years. Harfoots are one of 3 groups that are basically like proto-Hobbits (kind of like Neanderthals to modern humans); Fallohides and Stoors are the other two groups. Bilbo and Frodo were of Harfoot descent, while Smeagol was of Stoor descent.
Looking forward to following you guys through the show, even if we most likely won't get any memes for the Oak to crack up at along the way

It's great that they don't bother you, truly it is, and to be completely frank they don't really bother me either...but the pacing issues not bothering you does not equate to the absence of pacing issues with the first episode. I'm just happy that they got the feel of the world right, and that it feels lived in, unlike House of the Dragon which feels like a very sterile set instead of a living world (to me...still an entertaining show though).

One thing Peter Jackson did masterfully was giving the elves such an otherworldly aura. Like, even without knowing all of Tolkien’s lore around elves, you still get the feeling that they are not human.

I quite had fun in these first 2 epis, though I'm not entirely convinced the great amount of stage acting being done will be able to hold an audience long term. For nerds like me it will, but the lvl of 'fakeness' that comes with over exaggerated stage acting can seem disingenuous to an audience used to a more reactionary kind of acting, that immerses you in the emotion of a situation rather than the fantasy of one.
I'll be watching the 3rd epi as well and looking forward to more reactions! This one was great fun bois!!

He was come to the heart of the realm of Sauron and the forges of his ancient might, greatest in Middle-earth; all other powers were here subdued." But those fires were hot!

So, about the whole issue of "You can't judge it before you've seen it". Thing is though, the show does not exist in a vacuum. There have been articles and interviews, with cast and show runners. There have been trailers. We already know, before the show came out, based on what has been said by the people involved in the show, not just the "haters", 'ists and 'phobes. We can compare the things they have said to the things others have said about various "adaptations" that have failed. This show is not the first, and it won't be the last. We've heard these things before. The Last Airbender movie is a great example of this. There are plenty of examples in the last decade of people that swore up and down that they were "megafans" of the novels/shows they "adapted".
Now, I'm not going to lie, the show LOOKS amazing. The source material covers huge spans of time, with some characters literally living 1000s of years. Tolkien did not, obviously, write every moment of each characters life. The show is using that to their advantage to tell stories that "could" have happened in these large gaps. As such, this show is not even an "adaptation". Just enough named characters, just enough mentions of events from the novels to give it a touch of legitimacy. The rest.... Unquestionably one of the greatest fantasy shows that has ever aired, and that, after watching reactions to only 2 episodes. Why reactions, and not the episodes themselves? I won't support this show by watching it directly. Reaction videos are plenty, combined with what I know of the show from the many articles/interviews I've watched/read. Does it deserve to be linked to Tolkien, and The Lord of the Rings? Not in my opinion.
But, that's just my opinion, and it should not stop anyone else from watching, and enjoying the show.

Galadriel yall has been alive since the Years of the Trees. I just dont like that at this point in this show she is probably between 4 - 5000 years old and is treated like a child and looked down on by those who should be looking to her for advice and help.... I mean she was alive in Morgoths time... IDK I feel like the show runners have this fantasy and they picked the wrong time period... if they were going to have her like this then they should have went all the way back to the beginning and had Galadriel learning and exploring like everything was new to her... I mean thousands of years wouldnt by this time you'd know all the places, all the mountains, all the roads, and she is telepathic .... IDK IDK!!!! So what I find funny is that I am enjoying the Arondir and Harfoot storyline more enjoyable at the moment than the main storylines. And this is a problem. Why? Because Arondir and his storyline is made up. The harfoots only had a passing reference in the books with no story. So this takes away from what I should be enjoying which is Galadriel, Elrond and so forth. And this problem is coupled with the other problem that in the books Galadriel never had a revenge Gung Ho storyline. The focus for me is being taken away because the main character (Galadriel) is unlikable because her entire character is changed. And the made up characters are more intriguing than characters that Tolkien wrote. How is this possible lol? But it’s visually stunning and the music is great.

@@hovawartfreunde4599 Astonishingly, they did not even give us Finrod's name (let alone a bit of backstory like 'Finrod Felagund, who gave his life for Beren') and so made it that much harder to identify with Galadriel's loss of her brother. But then, they didn't mention Númenor in all that exposition either, apparently so that it can be a 'surprise' in episode 3. It is hard to understand the writers' thinking sometimes.
More troublesome is the likelihood that, with Galadriel already obsessed with finding and destroying Sauron, the 'historical' version in which she rejects the offer of friendship from the disguised Sauron will lose its impact-if it is portrayed at all. She will not reject Annatar (by whatever name) because of her deep insight or wisdom, but because of her enduring obsession with Sauron.

I'm hooked in hard right now after the first 2 episodes . Can't wait for episode 3 and beyond. I know they had to make up some stuff here and there ( Silmarillion is practically bible text and not pure story form like LOTR and Hobbit was . Just a bunch of stories collided together into one .. some stuff in here of course is new and it's sad that the rights are a bit strict and what they can and can't use which is dumb. I wish they had a lot more rights for this show. But all in all me thinking that this season was gonna be the weak spot of this show ( I'm still holding onto this that season 1 will be the weak spot . I think season 2 will kick in hard imo ) but even then so far I'm really enjoying this new visual journey in Middle Earth and I can't wait for more . When the seasons are all released in the next couple years , I'm definitely adding this to the binge collection one way or another even though it's gonna be 50 hours long supposedly for this entire show lol I have confidence that this will blend well when watching the movies. And I mean c'mon all this towards it ending to the Hobbit trilogy to return of the king , one way or another the binge will always end in greatness. It was fun watching y'all's adventure too with the 2 trilogies. I'm definitely subbed to see what you think of this whole new adventure. Curiosity is strong in this show

I'm a die-hard Tolkien fan. Read everything he's written and most of what his son Christopher put together as well. From what I recall when they first announced this show a few years back, the only mandate the creators were given is that they could not directly contradict anything from the source material. Beyond that, they were given free reign to do what they will in terms of original stories and characters. Not much was ever written about Galadriel, so they had an opportunity to add to her as they saw fit.
This didn't bother me too much. As much as everyone praises the LOTR trilogy as "perfect" there were multitudes of flaws, omissions, and things that were just plain made up there too.
Honestly I think most of the negativity that surrounded this Amazon show literally YEARS before it even came out is just down to nostalgia. Nobody ever likes anything new as much as they liked the stuff that they had when they were 20 years younger.
Long story short: It's just a TV show, but people will find a reason to hate anything. 😂

My negativity comes from Amazon and their history of the way they treat the source material . The anything for a profit strategy. Go after titles with a large fan base and tap into it for all the cash they can get. What the hell...it works for Disney and the others. Books and movies are two different things, totally different media and beyond compare. To expect a film or series to be as accurate as the book is ridiculous. The series is a product, produced and marketed to generate a profit. It's just business. Does anyone actually believe that Amazon cares anything about LOTR fans?
