Among the 66 enigmatic novels written by Agatha Christie, more than 50 deal with family crimes. In Christie’s work, murder is a smokescreen. Murder hides. Murder reveals. This is what Sonia Feertchak shows in her essay: murder hides the real subject of Christie’s work, which is the banality of evil at the heart of the family. Furthermore, as part of the plot, murder reveals what the family would prefer to silence : malevolence, jealousy, humiliation, incest... The truth is concealed for fear that it will kill. But in Christie’s novels the discovery of the body forces the relatives to admit there is a problem. The truth can no longer be concealed.
Sonia Feertchak will unveil her thesis which, by proposing an ultra-contemporary reading of the work of Agatha Christie, illuminates the taboo of family malice and the relationship of families to silence and truth.
