I've used a 291 for six years as a tree surgeon in the UK, it's never let me down. I run it with a 16" bar and chain, and use a 391 with an 18" bar and chain. My work has been forestry through to domestic work. At least they have out lasted my mates 560 xp.
Personally my trusty ms250 is my fav. We recently took in an ms291 which was gassed, scored pretty bad. But that shit happens, what surprised me when i stripped it down, it was obviously gas burned previously as well, and the cylinder was a 44.7mm. Dude was not happy that he had bought a saw with 10+% less grunt than he had been sold on. 😅
These saws are basically the same, the 291 has a slightly larger piston and larger cylinder bore, get the 291 and you get more power with identical weight, I would pay the extra money to get the extra power. The ms271 isn’t gonna help with the noise with 1db!
I agree. A 261 is my favorite saw, and I've used everything from the old 026 model to the newest MS261C-M (which I own) and I've seen them worked hard, put through hell, forgotten in the weather, abused, and the only times they've failed were due to complete disregard for maintenance, or clueless idiots attempting to tune the carb. The only 361 I've seen fail was brand new, out of the box, about 15 minutes into a job, because the guy who got gas didn't mix oil in the can that morning.

The 271 is a hell of a saw for $500
Well i found a MS 271 at the pawn shop today. Practically new for $350 flat. It will be my go to saw when i dont need the power of my 461 and 661

291 wins in my opinion, i been cutting with 4yrs thick tree ,but it still going strong

Junk, both are clamshell saws. Spend a little more and get something that lasts, aka ms261 or 362. Lighter and more powerful too

Yeah, choosing between a 270 and a 290 is like choosing between a bicycle with flat tires and a bicycle with no seat.
Not really i used a 291 more then the low power 261 its still going two and half years! Pro series or not they are way better saws now a days
