Karl Urban wants to reprise the roll but the film bombed at the Box office Dredd had an estimated $35 million budget, a pretty tight budget considering the scale of the movie all told. Per Box Office Mojo, Dredd's opening weekend was grim, barely making $6 million so sadly there's the reason.
Tbf it looks and sounds stupid if u walked by the poster at the cinema. They should have marketed the movie better. The only reason people know of that movie is through word to mouth which wasn’t reliable enough in 2012. By now lots of people seen the movie on Netflix and such so there’s a slim chance it could be picked up again. I bet a sequel would dominate streaming charts for weeks.r rated action can actually be successful nowadays. Especially comic stuff
@@samuel10125 Movie was in my city for ONE NIGHT ONLY. I must say that the audience in average was much older than usually I see in theaters. I was born in the 70's, there were guys who read the original comics in the 70's... Movie had no subtitles and the single event was sold out.
I heard not that long ago that there Was a TV series in the pipeline based around Rookie Judges who just graduated and Judge Dredd would appear as a mentor for them But I don’t know if it ever got the ground

Partly my fault. I wanted to watch it so bad at the time, I got chills seeing the trailer in theaters. However I was in highs school, with no car and none of my friends liked these kinds of films so no ride
Karl Urban actually petitioned to have fewer lines in the movie. Given that he's a big Judge Dredd fan, he felt that the character's stoicism would be better served by him speaking less.
@@danielruiz8259 Specifically, when he auditioned he asked if Dredd removed his helmet at any point. The director said no and that was all Urban needed to hear.
Indeed. I feel like times have changed slightly now, that we can enjoy films for their themes and effects without having to require a story with deep meaning. This film is always a great watch to me and it suits many situations, I can watch it normally or just have it running in the background while doing something else.

If they would have shown a slo-mo sequence or something that stressed this is more than just another attempt at a judge dred movie I think it would have done better. I'm sad I didn't see it in theaters but that was only because I thought the trailers didn't make it look very good.
In the beginning, Dredd says that if she loses her main weapon, it is an automatic fail. And while she does lose her lawgiver (the pistol) you realize when Dredd gives her a pass that he consider her psychic power her main weapon. Thats a clever way to interpret the law that I think is straight out of the comics.

Dredd calls her a "mutant" when finding out about her abilities and from the way he says it we can conclude that being a mutant is a bad thing. But we also see the chief judge explain that her powers would make her a rare and powerful asset. They reeaally would like her to pass thankuverymuch. In the comics being a mutant is indeed a bad thing. They are a apartheid society where inside the cities they're outlawed and sent out into internment camps in the cursed earth. As a judge cadet, Anderson might have been given the honourable option of doing the Long Walk, where she retains her armour, gun and supplies and is sent out to dispense judgement as she sees fit outside the city, never to return. However, in the comics Anderson is a Psi-judge which is a special branch of judges who all have the same abilities as Anderson. That department is also much looser in terms of following regulations so she would probably just get the same options that a regular normie cadet would get if failing, working in admin or as a dispatcher. They never confirm there being a Psi-judge department (even in the comics they didnt exist until after introducing Anderson in a storyline with supernatural beings from another dimension) only that "she is the strongest we've ever come across" which could mean that there are already other people with same abilities working as judges, they're just not as strong as her.
Another point is, he told her "you might not want to get captured...it's your call" Meaning, he put the matter up to her judgement, not his instructions. As literally a man of his word, he can't fault her for making judgment calls, when he told her to make judgement calls. Also, sacrificing her gun (what happens if a non-Judge tries to use a Lawgiver is well known to readers of the 2000AD) to take out her captor is a worthy move.
For sure, but I think the four bad Judges in this were also supposed to be mild references to them, since they probably knew it wouldn't get enough support for a sequel, despite being awesome 😇
As a fan of the comics I need to be a stickler and say it's not 100%, it's 99.999% recurring, but that's significant enough for him. If anything his superpower is repression.
According to Karl Urban. Alex Garland actually directed Dredd which just adds to his already crazy filmography. Such a shame this movie wasn’t supported more there’s so much lore to go into
I love that Karl Urban ask them if he had to take of the Helmet and that he would not play the Role if he had to. Hes a big Fan of the Comicbooks and Dredd never takes the Helmet of.

The pistol they have for Dredd is seriously one the coolest hand guns in fiction. It’s up there with the dominator from psycho pass. Literally explodes your arms if you aren’t an enforcers
If you aren't *specific* judge. Then can't use each other's guns even. They are programmed to their individual DNA and if you aren't owner you can't use it (explodes), even if other judge picks it up. That is why Anderson doesn't take corrupt Judge's gun or shotgun, they are all DNA matched.
Best movie gun for me is from "Dark Angel" with Dolph Lundgren. The prop itself was absolutely mental. If you emptied a mag at full auto you had to throw it away.
Its been pretty much confirmed over the years that Alex Garland basically directed this movie despite not being credited. Which is probably why it turned out so good.
I've been waiting a decade for a sequel to this. There was even talk of a Netflix series continuation staring Karl Urban a year or so ago. Let's all keep hoping.
It's in flux. Rebellion (owner of 2000 AD comics and a game developer behind Simpsons and several Aliens Vs Predator titles, also 2000 AD titles like Dredd Vs Death and Rpgue Trooper) wants to do it, but IM Global went bankrupt. They have their own studio set up, but they need someone willing to co-produce it with them.
It's coming but it's taking a long time. Rebellion have set up their own productions company and their own studio. They've even released their first movie to fund future projects including Mega City 1

I remember in one of the early comics, when Dredd has a maid and Walter the Wobot, that there's a frame in he's in the shower still wearing his helmet.😂😂

Karl Urban is an amazing actor and disappears into the role when he's on screen. He IS Judge Dredd in this movie. You watch this and you can't picture Billy Butcher from the Boys, or Dr. McCoy from Star Trek, or Eomer from Lord of the Rings and on and on. This is an underrated movie and deserved a sequel, and it's one of the best comic book adaptations of all time IMO.
Dredd is one of my all time favorite characters. This movie although a departure from the true off the wall crazy scifi of the comics did the character and the world so much justice. Dredd is the type of character where at the end of the movie he got back on his bike, rode off and checked dispatch for the next incident.
Damn should have read more comments. I just pretty much made this exact point. I feel like this is the one universally embraced comic book movie amongst comic fans. Which is insanely difficult.
I find it so bizarre that Brandon seems to love cinema so much, has this literal wall of discs behind him, and yet hasn't seen seemingly anything. Sometimes I get a bit cynical and think he has to be faking it, but no one's that good of an actor over so many videos and his reactions are so genuine and chill. I love this channel. It's due to his age. Pretty much most 80's and 90's films he probably hasn't seen, and even early 2000's films. I'm guessing tons of stuff from around 2009 to today. I'm a bit older and the people Brandon's age I know missed a lot of older films. Even people I know that are big into cinema his age, still haven't seen a huge selection, due to their age. With this film, not a lot of people saw Dredd, especially not in theaters.
It surprises but doesn’t surprise me. He’s a youngish guy who may not have been a film enthusiast the way me or others are. The same way I’d be coming in to most music post-1999 completely cold and wouldn’t be able to name more than 10 major pop artists today, and maybe half of those would I be able to associate songs with them.
I used to have a similar point of view until I looked at myself. I'm a child of the 70s and saw a lot of movies. But I just wasnt interested, nor was there enough time in the day for movies that came out 20-30 years before I was born: 1940s-1970s. I saw a few, but not even the great ones like Casa Blanca, Maltese Falcon or much of Hitchcock. That being said, if he was born in 2000....then, like me...he wasnt into nor had enough time in the day to watch movies that for him are 20-30 years before he was born. If Brandon is early 20s, then this movie might have come out when he was 9. At the age of 9, hadnt seen a lot of movies, myself, what with school and extracurriculars. As a teacher, I know most of my kids (pre-covid) attend school, have football practice, soccer, lacrosse, track, etc...and have maybe 3-4 hours/week of true free time. It's a different america.....but also kind of the same
That's true to a point. The Stallone movie tries to incorporate the satire and comedic tone that have been an integral part of the comics since the beginning, which this movie obviously doesn't. Dredd's a better movie for several reasons, but I do think the 1995 one deserves more credit than it gets haha.
@@JDelwynn That was my only slight criticism as well, the Stallone movie also gave a few nods to other Dredd characters, like Chopper 🙂, and the wider 2000AD universe with an ABC Warrior.
I hear all that you guys are saying, and I will concede that your points are valid but there are elements of the 1995 movie that absolutely ruined the film for me. It may be a simple thing, but in the books DREDD. NEVER. REMOVES. HIS. HELMET. with the rare exception of when he is either out of frame or has been surgically altered to go undercover. In that film the majority of his screen time we saw his face. Also, please don’t get me wrong. I’m all for the satire edge of things, but I feel that the Stallone film leaned on it WAY too hard.
@@BrandonLikesMovies Garland's original plan was a trilogy. The first movie, which is the one we got, would focus on establishing Dredd, Anderson, and the dystopian megacities. The second would have more of an emphasis on the nuclear wasteland known as the "cursed earth" outside the cities, with all the mutants and warlords that inhabit it. This is where some of the weirder elements come into play, because mutation out in the wastes leads to some of the more supernatural stuff in canon (Anderson is a psychic and only lived in the city, so imagine what generations of being on radioactive land can do). The third would be a rough adaptation of the Judge Death story from the comics, where a sadistic judge is brought back as a lich by mystics out in the cursed earth. It's one of the comics most popular stories, and wouldve been the perfect high note to end on.
Brandon is such a kindhearted and wholesome person. I love his reactions/reviews because he focuses on the story arcs, cinematography, VFX, etc. Basically the positives and the movie as a whole. He doesn't worry about nip picking flaws like most reactors/reviewers out there. For that, I salute you my friend! And with that out of the way can I recommend you look into Neill Blomkamp's movies if you haven't seen these already... -District 9 -Chappie -Elysium
I used to read 2000AD in the 80's, my fave was the Judge Dredd stories. Keith Urban played Dredd exactly as I imagined him to be when reading the comics.
Yeah, the 3D in this was amazing, compared to the $200M superhero movies I've seen in 3D. I tried to get everyone I know to go see Dredd, but only a couple people listened. I blame Stallone.
I wish they hadn't released it in 3D only, I think that was one of the factors in its poor reception, I have trouble with the glasses so I never watch 3D stuff at cinemas. Dredd famously never takes his helmet off, and Karl Urban said he checked that the helmet would stay on before taking the role. Best decision after that Stallone butchery killed the franchise for 30 years.
Judge Dredd has been the mainstay in the weekly comic 2000ad since 1977. A whole generation of British kids have grown up with him (including me). We were so excited when Stallone's version came out and so disappointed after watching it. This version of Dredd however ticked most of the boxes, the main one being that Dredd never takes his helmet off. Karl Urban was a fan and stipulated that he wouldn't show his face on screen. Kudos to him for that.
Absolutely. It was that dumb period where everything needed to have 3D so they worked that garbage really well into the film so that it elevates, or at least works well, even without 3D.
Have you read any of the crossovers? Judge Dredd/Lobo?!?! Dredd?Batman? Or the best one, Dredd/Aliens/Preadator. The one by Dixon I think, not the more recent one.
@@KCMMFB I recommend skipping the IDW stuff, and the regular DC series that came out the time of the Stallone movie. But stuff by Grant and Wagner should be good. And there was early work by Garth Ennis that was pretty good.

What a career Karl Urban has had. Eomer in Lord of the Rings, Bones in the new Star Trek movies, absolutely killing it as Dredd, Butcher in the Boys. He is nerd royalty now and forever
Just did the calculations. If they really are 1km above ground, and slomo reduces your perception of time to 1%, then at the end, Mama would have felt like she was in freefall for almost 24 minutes.
Slomo is weird, because it's a drug it doesn't actually slow time, just your perception of it. So wouldn't Ma-Ma just see the beginning of the fall and then nothing because you can't see anything if you die?
@@JDelwynn I guess it would depend on whether it speeds or slows brain activity. I assumed it sped up brain activity to the point where your perception of time slows by comparison, rather than slowing brain activity so that processing information would take longer.
@@JDelwynn That effect actually happens to people without drugs. It is just like putting life into slow motion- a short duration is perceived as a long duration, so according to his calculation yes it would feel like 24 minutes of falling for her.
@@JDelwynn It doesn't slow your perception of time, it does the opposite in fact and speeds it up. Your brain is processing time so fast that a second feels like forever, so it doesn't put you in "slo-mo" but actually the opposite, it speeds your processing up immensely.
The fact that this movie never got a sequel is one of the greatest injustices in film history. Karl Urban was flawless as Judge Dredd. And yeah, part of the point of Dredd's character is that he's kind of a faceless force for justice and he's not supposed to be seen as a normal human being with an identity and interests beyond his job as a Judge, unlike Anderson, so even in the comic you never see him without the helmet. Hell, they even make fun of that at times by doing stuff like showing him taking a shower with the helmet on and so on.
In case nobody has pointed it out to you yet, it was confirmed later on that Alex Garland pretty much directed the movie. He was on set during shooting and Karl Urban took directions from Garland. Pete Travis was forced out during post-production due to conflicts with Lionsgate.
Watch The Raid movies. The first Raid was made around the same time as this and has an insanely similar plot, but with the best fight choreography you’ve ever seen
I grew up reading 2000AD, the comic that Dredd was featured in and this is such a great updating of the whole thing. I just wish they'd do a sequel to this or get the proposed tv show on the go. Great reaction though. Keep up the good work.
“I am the Law” is Dredd’s catchphrase. He cares nothing for morals or extenuating circumstances. To him, if you break the law you get punished, no exceptions, no excuses, just a sentence. Death or prison.
"I am the law" is Judge Dredd's catch phrase. I didn't get to see this in a theater, but that was the line a British audience would have been waiting for. Probably got the same kind of cheer as "Hulk smash!" did in American theaters.
Interesting fact: Alex Garland actually did the majority of the directing. The director credited was brought on because the studio didn't trust Garland as a solo director.
I didn't hear anything about this movie when I first saw it, and was blown away by this movie. I cannot believe we haven't gotten a sequel. Urban was a perfect Dredd. Just such a great, brutal action movie.
One of the reasons that I think this is one of the best comic book movie of all time is that he never removes his helmet. That's comic book accurate. You never see his face. There's nothing under the mask for him. No human underneath. He is just Dredd. A lot of those shots that you complimented are straight out of the comics. Where they don't even show you his eye level. Focused on his jaw. And it helps that Urban looks like him naturally. Another reason I think it's the GOAT of comic book movies is that this story is original, they made a new story that was somewhat divergent from the comics lore. But they were so true to the character of Dredd and the overall style and world macro-story of the books, that none of us comic book fans cared about the non-comic accurate micro-story. I've never met a single comic book fan that had anything negative to say about this movie. Do you know how impossibly unlikely that is in our current day and age? Dredd is the one unanimous agreement on the internet. Sorry for rambling. I just love both the books and this movie. I could do an essay on it. And I hate writing essays with a passion that burns hotter than that guy who got the Hotshot to the mouth at the begining of the movie's head. 😜
Grew up reading the 2000AD comic, so much untapped material, Judge Dredd obviously the most famous. This is not a bad adaptation but still so much potential.
As few people have commented here, the series, Mega City One, has been in a perpetual state of limbo for a long time now. Karl Urban has said that he'd very much like to reprise the role of Dredd. Hope we'll get it one day! Great reaction as always, this is my second favorite movie where the hero is stuck in a skyscraper.
Judge Dredd started as a long running feature in a UK sci-fi comic 2000AD in the 70’s. He quickly became the most popular character throughout the run. Interesting that you mentioned a ‘Watchman’ feel to the movie. Alan Moore was a Dredd writer in the 80’s and eventually went on to write the watchmen graphic novel.

Dredd didn't like the Bat at first, the whole vigilante thing, but grew to appreciate him as he learned the world he came from. Plus Judge Death made Joker into a dark Judge and they had to work together. Definitely worth reading the crossover comics if you get the chance, sure they'll be online somewhere.
Fantastic reaction to a fantastic film. Karl Urban was brilliant in this movie. Dredd's face in the comic is never seen, so they honoured that by not showing Karl's face completely.
I used read 2000 AD comics back in the 90's as a teenager, it was the biggest comic series in Britain since the mid 80's, Dredd was the most iconic character of the comic series, best adaptation of comic series for encapsulation of the everyday grind of a Judge in Mega City 1. EDIT Also, he never took off his helmet in the comics, in the Stallone remake, he demanded that he have his helmet off all the time to show his face, at least our Aussie friend didnt have such a massive ego to not see his face. Extra Edit. Anderson is also from the comic and it's a good representation of her comic version. And 'I am the Law' was Dredd's catchphrase.
This movie is like sandpaper put to film. Pure grit. And it is awesome. Fun fact: Karl refused to take the helmet off when on set and in character to stay in character easier. Mans was committed and it shows.
Karl Urban is a boss. He needs more prominent roles, because he can definitely carry a movie. He's fantastic in The Boys, but he's awesome as Judge Dredd. Dredd comes from 2000 AD comic book series. I hope someone else will make another Dredd movie with Karl Urban in it.
One of the great things they did with this film is show that this was just another day to Judge Dredd.
My favourite part of the film is when he says;
"This was just another day to me, Judge Dredd."

If you aren't *specific* judge. Then can't use each other's guns even. They are programmed to their individual DNA and if you aren't owner you can't use it (explodes), even if other judge picks it up. That is why Anderson doesn't take corrupt Judge's gun or shotgun, they are all DNA matched.

Its been pretty much confirmed over the years that Alex Garland basically directed this movie despite not being credited. Which is probably why it turned out so good.

Rebellion (owner of 2000 AD comics and a game developer behind Simpsons and several Aliens Vs Predator titles, also 2000 AD titles like Dredd Vs Death and Rpgue Trooper) wants to do it, but IM Global went bankrupt. They have their own studio set up, but they need someone willing to co-produce it with them.

I love how simple this film is. It's just really a well done, contained day in the life of Judge Dredd. So enjoyable to watch.
One of the few films shot in 3D instead of being converted. A lot of the shot choices reflect that too. It was so great watching this in theaters

In the comics Dredd never takes off his helmet or shows his face. I'm glad they kept true to that in the movie.
He does take off his helmet, we just never see his face.
I remember in one of the early comics, when Dredd has a maid and Walter the Wobot, that there's a frame in he's in the shower still wearing his helmet.😂😂

Karl Urban is an amazing actor and disappears into the role when he's on screen. He IS Judge Dredd in this movie. You watch this and you can't picture Billy Butcher from the Boys, or Dr. McCoy from Star Trek, or Eomer from Lord of the Rings and on and on. This is an underrated movie and deserved a sequel, and it's one of the best comic book adaptations of all time IMO.
Dredd is one of my all time favorite characters. This movie although a departure from the true off the wall crazy scifi of the comics did the character and the world so much justice. Dredd is the type of character where at the end of the movie he got back on his bike, rode off and checked dispatch for the next incident.

I find it so bizarre that Brandon seems to love cinema so much, has this literal wall of discs behind him, and yet hasn't seen seemingly anything. Sometimes I get a bit cynical and think he has to be faking it, but no one's that good of an actor over so many videos and his reactions are so genuine and chill.

It's due to his age. Pretty much most 80's and 90's films he probably hasn't seen, and even early 2000's films. I'm guessing tons of stuff from around 2009 to today. I'm a bit older and the people Brandon's age I know missed a lot of older films. Even people I know that are big into cinema his age, still haven't seen a huge selection, due to their age. With this film, not a lot of people saw Dredd, especially not in theaters.
It surprises but doesn’t surprise me. He’s a youngish guy who may not have been a film enthusiast the way me or others are. The same way I’d be coming in to most music post-1999 completely cold and wouldn’t be able to name more than 10 major pop artists today, and maybe half of those would I be able to associate songs with them.
I used to have a similar point of view until I looked at myself. I'm a child of the 70s and saw a lot of movies. But I just wasnt interested, nor was there enough time in the day for movies that came out 20-30 years before I was born: 1940s-1970s. I saw a few, but not even the great ones like Casa Blanca, Maltese Falcon or much of Hitchcock. That being said, if he was born in 2000....then, like me...he wasnt into nor had enough time in the day to watch movies that for him are 20-30 years before he was born. If Brandon is early 20s, then this movie might have come out when he was 9. At the age of 9, hadnt seen a lot of movies, myself, what with school and extracurriculars. As a teacher, I know most of my kids (pre-covid) attend school, have football practice, soccer, lacrosse, track, etc...and have maybe 3-4 hours/week of true free time. It's a different america.....but also kind of the same

This movie pays SO MUCH BETTER HOMAGE to the original Judge Dredd comic books than the Sylvester Stallone movie.
I really like the look of the Stallone movie, Mega City one in this one looks like a normal city with a couple of megablocks here and there.
That's true to a point. The Stallone movie tries to incorporate the satire and comedic tone that have been an integral part of the comics since the beginning, which this movie obviously doesn't.
Dredd's a better movie for several reasons, but I do think the 1995 one deserves more credit than it gets haha.

I hear all that you guys are saying, and I will concede that your points are valid but there are elements of the 1995 movie that absolutely ruined the film for me. It may be a simple thing, but in the books DREDD. NEVER. REMOVES. HIS. HELMET. with the rare exception of when he is either out of frame or has been surgically altered to go undercover. In that film the majority of his screen time we saw his face. Also, please don’t get me wrong. I’m all for the satire edge of things, but I feel that the Stallone film leaned on it WAY too hard.

@@BrandonLikesMovies Garland's original plan was a trilogy. The first movie, which is the one we got, would focus on establishing Dredd, Anderson, and the dystopian megacities. The second would have more of an emphasis on the nuclear wasteland known as the "cursed earth" outside the cities, with all the mutants and warlords that inhabit it. This is where some of the weirder elements come into play, because mutation out in the wastes leads to some of the more supernatural stuff in canon (Anderson is a psychic and only lived in the city, so imagine what generations of being on radioactive land can do). The third would be a rough adaptation of the Judge Death story from the comics, where a sadistic judge is brought back as a lich by mystics out in the cursed earth. It's one of the comics most popular stories, and wouldve been the perfect high note to end on.
Urban never takes his mask off the whole movie... which already makes this much closer to the comic book source than the Stallone version.
This was the best movie to watch in 3D. The slomo and particle effects added so much to the depth of field, same went for the fall at the end.
Brandon is such a kindhearted and wholesome person. I love his reactions/reviews because he focuses on the story arcs, cinematography, VFX, etc. Basically the positives and the movie as a whole. He doesn't worry about nip picking flaws like most reactors/reviewers out there. For that, I salute you my friend!

We never got to see Dredd's face in all his comic book appearances. Fans were outraged with the Sly Stallone portrayal of the character.
Loooooooove this movie. Criminally underrated and should have had a sequel YEARS ago.
I felt so bad for Gleeson's character. Happy he got to survive at the end.

I used to read 2000AD in the 80's, my fave was the Judge Dredd stories. Keith Urban played Dredd exactly as I imagined him to be when reading the comics.
This is one I watch in 3D. It has a wonderful sense of place with the action and looks FANTASTIC. Why the hell didn't people see this movie?
Yeah, the 3D in this was amazing, compared to the $200M superhero movies I've seen in 3D. I tried to get everyone I know to go see Dredd, but only a couple people listened. I blame Stallone.

I wish they hadn't released it in 3D only, I think that was one of the factors in its poor reception, I have trouble with the glasses so I never watch 3D stuff at cinemas.
Dredd famously never takes his helmet off, and Karl Urban said he checked that the helmet would stay on before taking the role. Best decision after that Stallone butchery killed the franchise for 30 years.
This was my fav film on my 3D TV, watching how beautiful this was shot in the 3D edition was my favorite thing to do to leave reality for a while.

Alex Garland is only credited as writer, but Karl Urban stated he actually also directed most of the movie.
Judge Dredd has been the mainstay in the weekly comic 2000ad since 1977.
A whole generation of British kids have grown up with him (including me).
We were so excited when Stallone's version came out and so disappointed after watching it.
This version of Dredd however ticked most of the boxes, the main one being that Dredd never takes his helmet off.
Karl Urban was a fan and stipulated that he wouldn't show his face on screen.
Kudos to him for that.
It's a crime we never got a sequel. I sentence the studio to 10 years in an iso-cube.

Absolutely. It was that dumb period where everything needed to have 3D so they worked that garbage really well into the film so that it elevates, or at least works well, even without 3D.
Ever since this movie, I knew I had to dive in the lore and world of Dredd. No regrets so far.
Have you read any of the crossovers? Judge Dredd/Lobo?!?! Dredd?Batman? Or the best one, Dredd/Aliens/Preadator. The one by Dixon I think, not the more recent one.

@@KCMMFB I recommend skipping the IDW stuff, and the regular DC series that came out the time of the Stallone movie. But stuff by Grant and Wagner should be good. And there was early work by Garth Ennis that was pretty good.

Just did the calculations. If they really are 1km above ground, and slomo reduces your perception of time to 1%, then at the end, Mama would have felt like she was in freefall for almost 24 minutes.
Slomo is weird, because it's a drug it doesn't actually slow time, just your perception of it. So wouldn't Ma-Ma just see the beginning of the fall and then nothing because you can't see anything if you die?
@@JDelwynn I guess it would depend on whether it speeds or slows brain activity. I assumed it sped up brain activity to the point where your perception of time slows by comparison, rather than slowing brain activity so that processing information would take longer.
@@JDelwynn That effect actually happens to people without drugs. It is just like putting life into slow motion- a short duration is perceived as a long duration, so according to his calculation yes it would feel like 24 minutes of falling for her.
@@JDelwynn It doesn't slow your perception of time, it does the opposite in fact and speeds it up. Your brain is processing time so fast that a second feels like forever, so it doesn't put you in "slo-mo" but actually the opposite, it speeds your processing up immensely.

I was one of the twenty people that saw this in theaters. Still fucking love it. Such a great film all around.
The fact that this movie never got a sequel is one of the greatest injustices in film history. Karl Urban was flawless as Judge Dredd. And yeah, part of the point of Dredd's character is that he's kind of a faceless force for justice and he's not supposed to be seen as a normal human being with an identity and interests beyond his job as a Judge, unlike Anderson, so even in the comic you never see him without the helmet. Hell, they even make fun of that at times by doing stuff like showing him taking a shower with the helmet on and so on.
In case nobody has pointed it out to you yet, it was confirmed later on that Alex Garland pretty much directed the movie. He was on set during shooting and Karl Urban took directions from Garland. Pete Travis was forced out during post-production due to conflicts with Lionsgate.
Watch The Raid movies. The first Raid was made around the same time as this and has an insanely similar plot, but with the best fight choreography you’ve ever seen

I grew up reading 2000AD, the comic that Dredd was featured in and this is such a great updating of the whole thing. I just wish they'd do a sequel to this or get the proposed tv show on the go.

"I am the law" is Judge Dredd's catch phrase. I didn't get to see this in a theater, but that was the line a British audience would have been waiting for. Probably got the same kind of cheer as "Hulk smash!" did in American theaters.
Interesting fact: Alex Garland actually did the majority of the directing. The director credited was brought on because the studio didn't trust Garland as a solo director.
I didn't hear anything about this movie when I first saw it, and was blown away by this movie. I cannot believe we haven't gotten a sequel. Urban was a perfect Dredd. Just such a great, brutal action movie.
One of the reasons that I think this is one of the best comic book movie of all time is that he never removes his helmet. That's comic book accurate. You never see his face. There's nothing under the mask for him. No human underneath. He is just Dredd.
A lot of those shots that you complimented are straight out of the comics. Where they don't even show you his eye level. Focused on his jaw. And it helps that Urban looks like him naturally.
Another reason I think it's the GOAT of comic book movies is that this story is original, they made a new story that was somewhat divergent from the comics lore. But they were so true to the character of Dredd and the overall style and world macro-story of the books, that none of us comic book fans cared about the non-comic accurate micro-story.
I've never met a single comic book fan that had anything negative to say about this movie. Do you know how impossibly unlikely that is in our current day and age? Dredd is the one unanimous agreement on the internet.
Sorry for rambling. I just love both the books and this movie. I could do an essay on it. And I hate writing essays with a passion that burns hotter than that guy who got the Hotshot to the mouth at the begining of the movie's head. 😜

Apparently, the script for Dredd was laying on the shelf for so long that someone leaked it, and they adapted that to make The Raid.

Grew up reading the 2000AD comic, so much untapped material, Judge Dredd obviously the most famous. This is not a bad adaptation but still so much potential.
As few people have commented here, the series, Mega City One, has been in a perpetual state of limbo for a long time now. Karl Urban has said that he'd very much like to reprise the role of Dredd. Hope we'll get it one day! Great reaction as always, this is my second favorite movie where the hero is stuck in a skyscraper.
Judge Dredd started as a long running feature in a UK sci-fi comic 2000AD in the 70’s. He quickly became the most popular character throughout the run. Interesting that you mentioned a ‘Watchman’ feel to the movie. Alan Moore was a Dredd writer in the 80’s and eventually went on to write the watchmen graphic novel.

There are actually a bunch of Dredd/Batman crossover comics. Judgement On Gotham is the best one.
Dredd didn't like the Bat at first, the whole vigilante thing, but grew to appreciate him as he learned the world he came from. Plus Judge Death made Joker into a dark Judge and they had to work together. Definitely worth reading the crossover comics if you get the chance, sure they'll be online somewhere.

Fantastic reaction to a fantastic film. Karl Urban was brilliant in this movie. Dredd's face in the comic is never seen, so they honoured that by not showing Karl's face completely.
I used read 2000 AD comics back in the 90's as a teenager, it was the biggest comic series in Britain since the mid 80's, Dredd was the most iconic character of the comic series, best adaptation of comic series for encapsulation of the everyday grind of a Judge in Mega City 1. EDIT Also, he never took off his helmet in the comics, in the Stallone remake, he demanded that he have his helmet off all the time to show his face, at least our Aussie friend didnt have such a massive ego to not see his face. Extra Edit. Anderson is also from the comic and it's a good representation of her comic version. And 'I am the Law' was Dredd's catchphrase.

Karl Urban is a boss. He needs more prominent roles, because he can definitely carry a movie. He's fantastic in The Boys, but he's awesome as Judge Dredd. Dredd comes from 2000 AD comic book series. I hope someone else will make another Dredd movie with Karl Urban in it.
