At the time ( very early 80's) , my future wife, my sister and her husband ( my best friend ) rented a home with 3 bedrooms and living together we made one into a game room. We played Adventure so many times we lost count. That and Centipede along with Joust and Space invaders. My wife passed away in 2009, my sister and her husband (my best friend) have given up gaming a while ago. I'm into it still (now 69) as a first person shooter with Halo, Call to Duty, Tomb Raider and many more with my 5 speaker Gaming Chair, 48 inch Bravia , X-box 360 and an X-Box One. The best I can get to full immersion. But I smiled with the memory of Adventure and the many hours of joy we all had back then.That Easter egg is real had we but known.
The book didn't have The Shining, so you don't have to worry about that. Also, the author Ernie Cline is a huge fan of the movie Excalibur. The screening I went to had Cline in attendance. Afterwards, when he was signing my book, I asked him if that chant for the force field around the fortress (the Charm of Making from Excalibur) was Spielberg's idea or his. Cline got excited and said it was his and I was the first to ask him about it. He also asked if I also noticed it on the movie marquee in the beginning race and the poster in young Halliday's room at the end. He was really happy to meet another Excalibur fan.
dude! when i saw this at the theater and the guy said the charm of Making I started to clap because i loved it to death. Then iI noticed that everybody was just awkwordly looking at me. I think I was the only one in the room who got that Excalibur reference

I would have loved to seen it as a limited (7 part) series. I know people always say the book and movies are different, but in this case they 98% are. I read/listen to the book a few times every year and was absolutely disappointed with the movie.
The book was amazing and although I enjoyed the movie, I much preferred the book, especially the early exchanges between Parzival and Art3mis, which I felt was more authentic than the movie's sickly sweet Spielberg introduction of character's initial meeting. Just my opinion. The author's other book was also really cool. Called Armada, and had a similar feel to it as RP1.
@@EShelby2127 theres a wikia page which contains all the references in order, i believe i came across it before. also theres also an audiobook version (which is my favourite way to expereince the rp1 and armada books) and with that version a couple people have made a new version which includes some of the references, but not most of them called RP1SFX (it splits into two different creators halfway through). But yeah... creating a hyperlinked doc would be a bit of work, although you could probably do it automatically for most of the references or just select the text and search google but i get it. i'd love a series, the books story is wayy better than the movie, which although i enjoy, doesn't really make much sense story wise.
I think the simplest way i can describe the difference between the book and the film is that in the film Halliday worships nerd culture and the users of the Oasis and specifically the gunters just outfitted themselves in generalized references to nerd stuff and used that knowledge to try to find Halliday's easter egg. In the book Halliday is obsessed with one specific decade: the 80s. So any gunter had to have extensive knowledge of that one decade down to the most niche little known things that happened in nerd culture at that time and you had to know which of these things in that decade factored into Halliday's personal life. In the film you had to know the culture and surface level things about Halliday, in the book you needed extensive biographical knowledge of Halliday's life and you needed extensive historical knowledge of the 80s. Don't worry the book doesnt make it too dense lol

I mean, the Gundam, the ships in H's shop, the Iron Giant, the BG Blaster, etc, all were perfect replicas of the originals. Maybe it was a copyright issue, but I would have liked to have seen an exact replica of one of the three original Mechagodzillas, rather than a re-imagining of it.
The Iron Giant's thumbs up and death in the lava was reference to the Terminator 2 ending. This movie has so many Easter eggs it's hard to catch everything.

There are a lot of references to Steven Spielberg projects. He was also good friends with Stanley Kubrick, who directed The Shining. The whole sequence was a dedication to his friend. On a different note, there is a parody of The Shining on The Simpsons. Mr. Burns owns the lodge and when the blood leaves the elevator, Mr. Burns says, "That's odd. The blood usually gets off on the second floor."

Excellent reaction, Addie. I'm so glad that you enjoyed Ready Player One (2018), even though you had to relive your trauma of watching The Shining (1980), back in October. I think that's the reason why it won your Steven Spielberg poll on Patreon. My dad & I saw the movie in theaters on Easter Sunday 2018 and we both enjoyed it. That scene with Chucky was the funniest IMO. I also love how Parzival drives a DeLorean from Back to the Future (1985).
The book is one of my favorite books of all time. The movie is great but there is so much more detail in the book it's like watching ten seasons of a TV show lol would love your review of the book once you finish it 😊

I usually roll my eyes every time some one pops up saying how much better the book was for whatever adaptation is in question. In this case though, it's so so much better!!!

Having grown up in the 70's/80's I am always blown away by how many pop-culture references the author was able to squeeze into one film. Every time I watch, I see something new that takes me back to those days.
@@RabidTribble, it's hard to understand why you even like the movie if you read the book. 90% was thrown out, some things make no sense. Surely the budget of 175 million was a bit tight and the inexperienced director Steven Spielberg didn't help and the fact that the guy who helped the script was only the guy who wrote the book had no idea of why the book was so good. Actually it's harder to make to movie so bad with all these factors than making it good.
@@DaveMcIroy The book and the movie are very different products with different audiences, so I was able to separate and enjoy them for what they were. Hollywood RARELY moves from books to film in a way that satisfies fans, but I thought the movie was able to stand on its own. Personally, I would love to see the material revisited as a mini-series or an HBO-style series so a more faithful telling of the story could be possible, but I was still happy with the film.
My friend sent me this book on my kindle and told me to read it because I lived through all the references and am still stuck in the 80s haha. I started reading the book at like 9pm thinking I would read a couple chapters and move on for the night. Turns out I accidentally forgot to sleep and I finished the book and realized it was 5am. Only book I’ve ever read in a night. Favorite book ever. While I think the book is better the movie lived up to the hype
I loved this movie. I grew up with the advent of video games. Pong was my first gaming system. So seeing all the references from Pong up to modern games was a treat for me. Not just the games but all the movies and everything. I will say that the part that got me the most was Haliday's smile when Parzival refused to sign the contract. That, "Oh good", and that look on his face breaks my heart.
The book is quite different to the film is some ways. Mainly because filming the tasks as written would probably be incredibly boring. The film is class. As a gamer of over 40 years, I LOVED it. And all the 80s references were fun to watch, having lived through them 😂
It would also have meant getting the rights to an absolute ton of different 80s movies, shows, and games for all the references. The tasks are very different but both work well in their own right. The book is definitely a good read, and the second book is good too. I enjoyed Ernest Cline's book Armada too. Had a real The Last Starfighter feel.

The Halliday that Wade was talking to in Oasis was a program using all his memories stored in the Journals to simulate him. Basically Halliday made himself immortal for as long as the building storing his memories existed in Oasis.

Great reaction. I love this movie, love the book. I had a full-on nerdgasm when I saw this in the theater and heard them speak the Charm of Making from my all time favorite movie Excalibur. It's the "spell" they use to activate/deactivate the orb in RP1. Excalibur isn't as well known as the other pop culture references in this book/movie and I felt so validated as a fan when I heard the Charm. The author Ernest Cline must have been a fan of the film too.
The book is tons of fun. The structure of the book is the same but pretty much every detail is almost entirely different. It makes sense for the medium because the details in the film are more cinematic than what works in the book on the page. Also they had to clear all the references in the film.
All I have to say is wow, you really enjoyed this movie even with missing like 75% of the references placed in the movie. I did especially like everything you did recognize. It really means you are paying attention to the movie you are watching. I've seen so many TH-camrs that react to movies and then ask a silly question because they missed things being explained to them like 5 minutes ago.
I tend to cut them some slack because their job is not to simply WATCH the movie but to react and comment on it. Note that I said *_SOME_* slack. If they get lost they should stop recording, roll back and re-watch things until they catch up, then resume recording.
Love the movie, but the book is one of my top 3 of all time and it doesn't have too much in common with the movie. Would love to know what you think of it once you're done reading!
Yeah for those like me who grew up in the 80s this movie is chock full of references to the 80s. It is a love story to that time frame and the pop culture of that time.
It’s implied that if Halliday at the end is NOT an avatar, and is still dead, then that could mean his consciousness was somehow uploaded to the oasis, which is who wade was speaking with at the end
Seeing Halliday at the end makes me think that if he was such a big brained, sci-fi fan then he may have found a way to cheat death by downloading/copying his brain patterns to the system. Just like in Ghost in the Shell. Which explains that ambiguous answer before he said his goodbye. It also was a bittersweet moment because he accomplished what he wanted: a free world with unlimited possibilities.

Not too many people in this day and age, and almost no reactors, have seen the 1981 movie Excalibur, so the Charm of Making chant (“Anal nathrach…”) used throughout the movie has become a VERY obscure reference.

Seeing as how someone can literally experience life in a digital world, i'd guess that Halliday was a "copy" of his brain pattern and placed into the creation he loved. Not to rule or control, but just to be among his creation and see how much people love being there.
22:00 - "Out of all the movies that we had to go into, WHY The Shining?!" I'm about to give you the answer. As pointed out, the book and the film are drastically different from one another. In the book, the second challenge involved Blade Runner as the film (and it served as the entry point into the second gate challenge). However, Warner Brothers had already been working on the sequel to Blade Runner (Blade Runner 2049) around that time, so the film rights for the original couldn't be used. So, Ernest Cline (the author of the book) pitched some alternatives to Steven Spielberg. When he pitched The Shining, Spielberg agreed on it. Why? Because Stanley Kubrick was a friend of his and he had a good friendship with him and his family (originally, Kubrick and Spielberg were going to work on the film A.I.: Artificial Intelligence together, but Kubrick passed after finishing up editing on his film Eyes Wide Shut). Not only were they good friends, Spielberg was a fan of Kubrick's wprl and met him for the first time on the soundstages for The Shining (Spielberg was touring the studio Kubrick was filming at, as he was going to be filming Raiders of the Lost Ark at the same studio as soon as The Shining wrapped production). There's even a bit of a personalized Easter Egg in the film in regards to this moment: The High Five entered The Shining Challenge through The Colorado Room (the room where Jack is seem working on his novel, as well as the scene where Wendy finds the "All Work and No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy" pages). Spielberg and Kubrick met for the first time in the Colorado Room set. The entire Shining Challenge was as much a personal Easter Egg to his friend as it was something for the characters to go through.
One of the things I love about this movie was the nostalgia. Back in the day before consoles came to be I was one of those teens getting yelled at by my parents for spending all my hard earned money one quarter at a time in the arcade. Galaga, pacman, joust, spy hunter and so many more.
RP1 is an incredible book and when the movie finally came out several years later it seemed impossible that they could incorporate as much of the book as they did. I kind of wish they could have done some things differently but I think it came out pretty good. Seemed fitting that it came out on Easter weekend.
H's reveal felt too rushed and a few key things that happened in the book were missing, but I think they were trying to avoid getting too dark to make it more appealing to a broader audience.
So many pop culture references I watched this movie like 5 times in theaters and 3 times at home read the book and I gotta say reading the book you can just close your eyes and imagine that your in the oasis
I read the book first, before the movie was made and loved it so much. I was born in 1977, so I grew up very much in the 80's when a lot of the references are, which was really fun. As movie adaptations go, this one was really well done. They changed and added some things, but in a way that preserved the style and feel while just making it more cinematic that would work better in a movie medium.
I used to play Adventure a lot back in the day (it was one of about a dozen games I owned for my Atari 2600... they were expensive back then). After a while, just winning was kind of boring, so I came up with my own win critera: get every single item except for the bat and the chalice inside of the easter egg room (where the creator's name is), then release the bat holding the chalice so it would fly into the door of the castle and win the game. So I saw the solution coming before the characters in the movie did, which is a good thing, it means the logic of the movie world is solid. :) So many little touches in this movie that I loved. I think one of my favorites (because it's so old/obscure) is the line art drawing of the demon face from the original S1: The Tomb of Horrors that they had painted on the back of their van.

I think the book and the movie should always be seen as a package deal and be compared. A Friend of mine is a teacher and she uses book and movie in school as a teaching device. And actually I would advice to get the audio book. Not something I usually do, I love to read, but Wil Wheaton brings so much to the book the way he reads it!
This movie is a meta smorgasbord. So many references crammed into one movie. But for starters you have Artemis' sweet ride which is the bike used in the anime Akira. You have the Delorean from Back to The Future, the T-Rex from Jurassic Park and King Kong just for kicks and giggles. Not to mention the Iron Giant. Which is definitely worth a view. 😂 The incantation to activate the Orb of Osuvox is taken from the "1981" movie Excalibur. It was the Spell that Morgana Le Fay used to trap Merlin the Enchanter. The glaive thrown by Artemis is from the classic sci-fi/fantasy film Krull. The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch from the Monty Python Comedy Troupe movie Monty Python and The Holy Grail. 😂 There are 138 meta references and easter eggs in this movie. Have fun cataloguing them all. 😂

I don’t know if this was intentional by the book or movie, but James Halliday has the same initials as Jim Henson, and while Jim is known for puppetry, he also helped either pioneer new technology or expand existing technology in order to help bring the world of puppetry, filmmaking, and overall creativity to life and then some! I think James Halliday was probably meant to resemble Willy Wonka to an extent, but I feel he mostly resembles (in looks and personality) a cross between Wonka (Gene Wilder version) and Jim Henson. But mostly Henson, in my opinion. And I mean that in the nicest may possible!💖💖💖

I think that's the reason why it won your Steven Spielberg poll on Patreon. My dad & I saw the movie in theaters on Easter Sunday 2018 and we both enjoyed it. That scene with Chucky was the funniest IMO. I also love how Parzival drives a DeLorean from Back to the Future (1985).

The book is one of my favorite books of all time. The movie is great but there is so much more detail in the book it's like watching ten seasons of a TV show lol would love your review of the book once you finish it 😊
I agree, I think the book is 100x better than the movie and in my opinion is because it goes a lot more in depth but a 2 hour movie can only fit in so much so I understand
I usually roll my eyes every time some one pops up saying how much better the book was for whatever adaptation is in question. In this case though, it's so so much better!!!
Loved this film so much, and so many nostalgic moments that reminds me of my younger days! The way things are going these days, that world might not be as far away as we all think.

Having grown up in the 70's/80's I am always blown away by how many pop-culture references the author was able to squeeze into one film. Every time I watch, I see something new that takes me back to those days.

90% was thrown out, some things make no sense. Surely the budget of 175 million was a bit tight and the inexperienced director Steven Spielberg didn't help and the fact that the guy who helped the script was only the guy who wrote the book had no idea of why the book was so good.
Actually it's harder to make to movie so bad with all these factors than making it good.
@@DaveMcIroy The book and the movie are very different products with different audiences, so I was able to separate and enjoy them for what they were. Hollywood RARELY moves from books to film in a way that satisfies fans, but I thought the movie was able to stand on its own.
Personally, I would love to see the material revisited as a mini-series or an HBO-style series so a more faithful telling of the story could be possible, but I was still happy with the film.
This movie made me go down a series of 80s rabbit holes. Movies, tv series, music.
The digital recreation of The Shining hotel is incredible. They even duplicated the film grain.

My friend sent me this book on my kindle and told me to read it because I lived through all the references and am still stuck in the 80s haha. I started reading the book at like 9pm thinking I would read a couple chapters and move on for the night. Turns out I accidentally forgot to sleep and I finished the book and realized it was 5am. Only book I’ve ever read in a night. Favorite book ever. While I think the book is better the movie lived up to the hype
I loved this movie. I grew up with the advent of video games. Pong was my first gaming system. So seeing all the references from Pong up to modern games was a treat for me. Not just the games but all the movies and everything.
I will say that the part that got me the most was Haliday's smile when Parzival refused to sign the contract. That, "Oh good", and that look on his face breaks my heart.
The book is quite different to the film is some ways. Mainly because filming the tasks as written would probably be incredibly boring. The film is class. As a gamer of over 40 years, I LOVED it. And all the 80s references were fun to watch, having lived through them 😂
It would also have meant getting the rights to an absolute ton of different 80s movies, shows, and games for all the references. The tasks are very different but both work well in their own right. The book is definitely a good read, and the second book is good too. I enjoyed Ernest Cline's book Armada too. Had a real The Last Starfighter feel.

The Halliday that Wade was talking to in Oasis was a program using all his memories stored in the Journals to simulate him. Basically Halliday made himself immortal for as long as the building storing his memories existed in Oasis.

Great reaction. I love this movie, love the book. I had a full-on nerdgasm when I saw this in the theater and heard them speak the Charm of Making from my all time favorite movie Excalibur. It's the "spell" they use to activate/deactivate the orb in RP1. Excalibur isn't as well known as the other pop culture references in this book/movie and I felt so validated as a fan when I heard the Charm. The author Ernest Cline must have been a fan of the film too.
A lot of the references in this film were changed from the book. I don't recall if the Excalibur reference was in it.

The magic spell "Anál nathrach, orth' bháis's bethad, do chél dénmha" was from the best King Arthur movie Excalibur.
The book is tons of fun. The structure of the book is the same but pretty much every detail is almost entirely different. It makes sense for the medium because the details in the film are more cinematic than what works in the book on the page. Also they had to clear all the references in the film.

All I have to say is wow, you really enjoyed this movie even with missing like 75% of the references placed in the movie. I did especially like everything you did recognize. It really means you are paying attention to the movie you are watching. I've seen so many TH-camrs that react to movies and then ask a silly question because they missed things being explained to them like 5 minutes ago.
I tend to cut them some slack because their job is not to simply WATCH the movie but to react and comment on it.
Note that I said *_SOME_* slack. If they get lost they should stop recording, roll back and re-watch things until they catch up, then resume recording.

Yeah for those like me who grew up in the 80s this movie is chock full of references to the 80s. It is a love story to that time frame and the pop culture of that time.
It’s implied that if Halliday at the end is NOT an avatar, and is still dead, then that could mean his consciousness was somehow uploaded to the oasis, which is who wade was speaking with at the end
Seeing Halliday at the end makes me think that if he was such a big brained, sci-fi fan then he may have found a way to cheat death by downloading/copying his brain patterns to the system. Just like in Ghost in the Shell. Which explains that ambiguous answer before he said his goodbye. It also was a bittersweet moment because he accomplished what he wanted: a free world with unlimited possibilities.

Seeing as how someone can literally experience life in a digital world, i'd guess that Halliday was a "copy" of his brain pattern and placed into the creation he loved. Not to rule or control, but just to be among his creation and see how much people love being there.
22:00 - "Out of all the movies that we had to go into, WHY The Shining?!" I'm about to give you the answer. As pointed out, the book and the film are drastically different from one another. In the book, the second challenge involved Blade Runner as the film (and it served as the entry point into the second gate challenge). However, Warner Brothers had already been working on the sequel to Blade Runner (Blade Runner 2049) around that time, so the film rights for the original couldn't be used. So, Ernest Cline (the author of the book) pitched some alternatives to Steven Spielberg. When he pitched The Shining, Spielberg agreed on it. Why? Because Stanley Kubrick was a friend of his and he had a good friendship with him and his family (originally, Kubrick and Spielberg were going to work on the film A.I.: Artificial Intelligence together, but Kubrick passed after finishing up editing on his film Eyes Wide Shut).
Not only were they good friends, Spielberg was a fan of Kubrick's wprl and met him for the first time on the soundstages for The Shining (Spielberg was touring the studio Kubrick was filming at, as he was going to be filming Raiders of the Lost Ark at the same studio as soon as The Shining wrapped production). There's even a bit of a personalized Easter Egg in the film in regards to this moment: The High Five entered The Shining Challenge through The Colorado Room (the room where Jack is seem working on his novel, as well as the scene where Wendy finds the "All Work and No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy" pages). Spielberg and Kubrick met for the first time in the Colorado Room set. The entire Shining Challenge was as much a personal Easter Egg to his friend as it was something for the characters to go through.
One of the things I love about this movie was the nostalgia. Back in the day before consoles came to be I was one of those teens getting yelled at by my parents for spending all my hard earned money one quarter at a time in the arcade. Galaga, pacman, joust, spy hunter and so many more.

RP1 is an incredible book and when the movie finally came out several years later it seemed impossible that they could incorporate as much of the book as they did. I kind of wish they could have done some things differently but I think it came out pretty good. Seemed fitting that it came out on Easter weekend.
H's reveal felt too rushed and a few key things that happened in the book were missing, but I think they were trying to avoid getting too dark to make it more appealing to a broader audience.

So many pop culture references I watched this movie like 5 times in theaters and 3 times at home read the book and I gotta say reading the book you can just close your eyes and imagine that your in the oasis
I read the book first, before the movie was made and loved it so much. I was born in 1977, so I grew up very much in the 80's when a lot of the references are, which was really fun. As movie adaptations go, this one was really well done. They changed and added some things, but in a way that preserved the style and feel while just making it more cinematic that would work better in a movie medium.

As someone who read the book, I will never forgive this movie for being this movie.
I used to play Adventure a lot back in the day (it was one of about a dozen games I owned for my Atari 2600... they were expensive back then). After a while, just winning was kind of boring, so I came up with my own win critera: get every single item except for the bat and the chalice inside of the easter egg room (where the creator's name is), then release the bat holding the chalice so it would fly into the door of the castle and win the game. So I saw the solution coming before the characters in the movie did, which is a good thing, it means the logic of the movie world is solid. :)
So many little touches in this movie that I loved. I think one of my favorites (because it's so old/obscure) is the line art drawing of the demon face from the original S1: The Tomb of Horrors that they had painted on the back of their van.

Only two things make me cry in this movie: MechaGodzilla starts the tears but Gundam makes them flow.
The book is amazing. I much prefer it to the film, but there are a lot of 80s pop & video game references. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did.

I always think of how little IOI was offering Wade. A few millions VS. 500 Billion. And at the end that was split 5 ways so 100 Billion each.

This movie is a meta smorgasbord. So many references crammed into one movie. But for starters you have Artemis' sweet ride which is the bike used in the anime Akira. You have the Delorean from Back to The Future, the T-Rex from Jurassic Park and King Kong just for kicks and giggles. Not to mention the Iron Giant. Which is definitely worth a view. 😂

I don’t know if this was intentional by the book or movie, but James Halliday has the same initials as Jim Henson, and while Jim is known for puppetry, he also helped either pioneer new technology or expand existing technology in order to help bring the world of puppetry, filmmaking, and overall creativity to life and then some! I think James Halliday was probably meant to resemble Willy Wonka to an extent, but I feel he mostly resembles (in looks and personality) a cross between Wonka (Gene Wilder version) and Jim Henson. But mostly Henson, in my opinion. And I mean that in the nicest may possible!💖💖💖
