When To Switch Lure - Walleye Fishing

  • We are back with another video. Most the time when I film a video I know what the video is going to be about before I film it. Reality check.....thats not how fishing works, especially walleye fishing. Switching baits is often mandatory to have a successful day on the water. This video is all about when to switch and the several options available. Fast, Medium, Slow. I don't think about lures much on an individual level but more as a speed deal. When the bite slows often a presentation that spends more time in front of that fish is necessary. Walleyes can be a finicky fish and that is why we love them!

Tom, you are the best teacher for walleye I have seen so far. This video is reality to all of us walleye anglers. We try to catch them our favorite way, but sometimes that doesn't work. And even when it does work for awhile, then the walleye do what they do best and that is get finicky. Great teaching once again. Keep them coming

In one way or another I need to tell you Thank you. My parents have a small place on Delavan Lake, WI. My setup is a Ranger Reata 210. Helix 10 G2N DI at the Bow, Helix 10 G2N DI/SI at the dash. I put together your slip bobber setup with the egg sinker, swivel, jig and leech. I side imaged a tight pod, marked them with a way point, circled back around to the way point, spot locked then dropped the slip bobber combo and landed two 23s and one 21 inch Walley. Without your videos I wouldn't have ever tried that. Thank You for putting out content that's practical.

So, you might find this interesting. I was like a lot of Midwest fishermen - I picked up a walleye occasionally and felt myself lucky when I did. Which is exactly what it was -- blind casting, guesswork, and a lot of pure luck.
Then, in the last month, two things happened. I got a Helix 9 gen 3 with mega side imaging, and I watched the last two years of Tom Boley's videos.
I was skeptical. I assumed he was probably selling tackle for his brother-in-law's company or something like that. But I decided to take a chance, so I bought the exact Kalin's jigs and bodies he recommends, watched a few more of his videos and went fishing.
    I was wrong to doubt!
Long story short, I went out to an over-fished urban lake near my home (known locally as "The Dead Sea"). I turned on my side imaging and started looking for the sorts of images he describes, found the fish, and started snap jigging according to his instructions. And within about thirty minutes I had crushed half a dozen walleyes, four of them 17-19 inches.
Cynical me, I still suspected that it was some kind of coincidence. But the experience repeated itself, to greater or lesser degrees, over the next several weeks. I am now catching lots of walleyes, I am a total believer, and I will not miss a single Tom Boley video in the future. Thanks, Tom, and keep up the good work!

Great tip! I told the same thing to my brothers, they're always throwing plastics. In clear water, boat traffic, and fishing pressure, the bite is going to be tough. I told them to downsize, or change presentations to something slower. As soon as I switched, and started experimenting, I started smashing fish that they could not catch. And from what I gathered, based on the water current, and wanting to put the bait in the right strike zone for a longer period of time, I drifted a plain octopus hook 5' 8lb floruo, and minnow in about that zone of 2-3 fow. Started smashing fish, and shoving it in their face. Funny how it takes them so long to change their ways, only to find out their aggressive ways won't always catch fish. Let the environment and fish tell you what they want. They all soon asked me how I rigged my setup and what kind of presentation I used to approach those finicky fish. Love this about fishing, figuring them out and dialing them in. Also teaching and learning from others. Many thanks to the content as always!

Tom thanks for another terrific video. Great advice. We can't tell the fish what they're supposed to eat. They have to tell us what they want to eat, and we have to give it to them to get bit. This one was a great learning experience, on how to "shift on the fly" and respond to what the fish are trying to tell you. This video is one of your best!

You are one great information Highway. Please keep producing these fish filled action packed videos. Do you ever use jerk baits very much? I understand with your electronics you have your quarry cornered, now, just to bring them to the boat. I often go out and throw a jerk bait as a search and destroy tool. Cover lots of water, but will admit, not as productive as you are. Just enjoy the fight.

A request, if I may -- I think it would be very beneficial if you could screenshot all the places you tried to fish on a given day and include just a quick commentary on the ones you caught fish and the ones that didn't produce anything. The reason I ask is that for some of us who are not so experienced with side imaging, it would be helpful to see everything that you thought might be fish or worth fishing. I know it might help me identify the not-so-obvious groups of fish that I am likely passing up.

I understand the outboard can reduce resolution of the Side Imaging. Would you recommend mounting 2 transducer plates on the transom, one on each side? Also, with 2 Humminbirds with Side Imaging as your setup is, are can you split the signal to 1 transducer or better to mount a transducer on each side of the outboard?

Tom, over the past few days here in central Wisconsin, I’ve been catching nothing but 13-14” fish in two ranges, 10-14’ and 17-20’, nothing shallow like 5-10’. Water temps were upper 60’s until the last cold front then dropped it back into the mid to upper 50’s. Do you think the larger fish are mixed in but not biting, or are simply elsewhere? (Last week was catching 17-26” fish bottom bouncing with spinners).
