    I have decided to change the rear spring on the KLR which is way too mushy. The problem lies in of course choosing the spring rate. Some sites say just use everyday rider weight and gear (Top Gun) others say use include the weight of anything you might carry and to add up to 30% for things out on the sub frame because of leverage (Happy Trails/Eibach). So I am completely lost because depending on methodology I could go from 7.4 to 9.0 kg/mm. My everyday weight with gear and farkles is ~240-260lbs but with all camping gear its closer to 350lbs (with the 30% add factor).

    I replaced my shock and it made a WORLD of difference!
    Do yourself a favor: go ahead and buy the spring compressors. Don’t try to use what’s available at your local auto store. They don’t work

    Manual says never counter-clock turn the preload adjuster. Set it by clockwise always. Is it safe? Am I missing something?

    Was that 3w Bel Ray Racing shock oil or 5w that you put in there? What do you recommend for use with the 8.7 kg spring? Do you sell it on your website? I can't find it.

    Great video. I have a 1993 Suzuki DR650S that has a similar style shock. is the process for rebuilding the same?

    Why is it so important to fill it with nitrogen verses air (21 percent O2 and 70 percent nitrogen)?

    • @chuntr
      @chuntr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oxygen oxidizes things. Nitrogen does not. If you rebuild your shocks every season it probably won't matter. If you are gonna neglect your suspension for another 20 years, then go ahead and spring for the nitrogen.

      PS air is like 79% Nitrogen but who's counting

    I went up one size on the rear shock spring and it was to stiff I had to swap it back to stock spring.

    • @chuntr
      @chuntr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      is there any reason you went "up one size"?

      @@chuntr Yeah the stock spring needed to be painted so I was going to put a new one on.

    HOW MANY PSI OF GAS NITRÓGENO DID YOU FILL INSIDE OF THE SHOCK PLEASE MAYBE DID YOU SAID FIFTY 50 PSI OF GAS NITRÓGENO I WILL APRECIATE YOUR ASWER IAM SEE YOU FROM PARRAS DE LA FUENTE COAHUILA MÉXICO

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  ปีที่แล้ว

      The shock should be filled with 140 psi of nitrogen, but you will want to confirm with the service manual for your specific motorcycle.

    I notice on both your first and second gen shocks, the plastic "protector" is missing. Were these removed? Are they not necessary when reassembling?

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, are you referring to this video or our KLR650 Shock Rebuild video? In this video at min 7:55 the plastic protector for the clicker is back on the shock. Are you referring to a different part?

    • @laizalott
      @laizalott 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I checked bikebandit, and it seems to only be included on the second-gens...pardon my confusion. It's not the plastic cover over the rebound adjuster, but a much bigger plastic part...I can't find a name for it, I'm afraid. It covers the bump stop and exposed shaft, and is actually inside the spring, with a lip that sits on top of the spring and beneath the retainer ring. Mine was a little damaged from my shoddy upgrade work, so I was just concerned if I should put it back in. Thank you for the reply :)

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lydia Jones I see. That plastic sleeve covering the shaft. I would definitely try to reuse it. Maybe smooth it out the best you can with a little sandpaper where needed. I don't show that part is replaceable.
