Check out Father Fish's method. I set up a 10 gallon with garden soil capped with play sand. Got all my wood and stones from a local stream and put them straight into the tank without cleaning them at all and added LOTS of plants. No co2 or ferts. Bought a good light, heater and filter. 14 months later, my technically over stocked tank is healthy and thriving. This is not a cheap hobby but you can keep costs down by buying used equipment. Watch Fishtory and Father Fish and you'll be golden.
Wow, it sounds like you've really created a thriving ecosystem in your 10-gallon tank! It's inspiring to hear how well everything has come together after 14 months. Keep sharing your journey!
Hope you guys are doing alright with the hurricane!
Thank you, we are all good here thankfully :)
