All the EA Big games need to come back, especially SSX. I hope SEGA bringing back all their classics will be a success that drives EA to do the same. We need SSX, Burnout, all the Street games and Def Jam to come back.

For creators, I highly recommend Kiki's Delivery Service. Immaculate vibes and it deals with uncertainty and burnout in a great way all whilst being charming.
My favorite is Spirited Away. It transports you to a completely new world and makes you fall in love with that world as much as the characters within it.

My neighbor Totoro as well is another masterpiece. I'm no expert by any means, but I think those 2, plus Mononoke, are really the best starting point. If you can find them in a theater near you that would be ideal, I've been off long island for awhile so I dont even know where to look anymore for anime and older films up there. The Miyazaki movie you need to watch is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, solely due to the story behind the movie itself. When it was brought over to America in the 80s, we tried to make it more marketable. That involved changing the name to Warriors of the Wind, making the poster/cover art feature characters and items that didn't exist in movies (I'm talking lightsabers, Pegasus. It's absurd.) And chopping about 20 minutes of important world building from the movie. Miyazaki was so upset that he refused to work on the IP ever again. Which is a shame because the movie covers about 1/5 of the manga. Thankfully we did finally put the movie back together, and it's terrific, with an incredible soundtrack. I highly recommend it.

'The Wind Rises' Romantic and sad but in a maturing, moving on kind of way. Coming to terms with life and its hardships i guess. It just feels so real. But i guess all the Studio Ghibli movies do. I can't really put my finger on it, they're just raw and curious. They are so spectacular yet so ordinary. They're very good at capturing those moments in between when life happens. Where you just exist for a moment, in silence. Pondering, maybe the why of our existence, maybe nothing, just being.

This was one of the movies that made me an ecological conservationist, I’m sure you also enjoyed Ferngully and generally agree with Avalanche in FF7. Watch Nausicaa for the next Miyazaki movie. Grave of Fireflies is about post WWII life that made me cry. Spirited Away is about human overconsumption. If you want Childlike fantasy, Ponyo and My Neighbor Totoro. If you're someone who prefers a more traditional, linear story, then I really recommend Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. A lot of Ghibli films can be very free-form and fever dreamish. Nausicaä is a nice look into how they handle the more traditional story structure with all of the fresh imagination that comes with a Ghibli film.

Re: Extreme games, god YES. Plus I would love more “what if we took this normal thing and made Michael Bay make a game about it”. Give me Warframe movement in a waterskiing game. Give me a gold game but I’m a Bionicle using mask powers to make the ball do insane things and get around obstacles. Give me football but it’s Transformers fighting over Energon. Yknow? Give me a WWE game but it’s Pacific Rim style “Giant robots fighting giant aliens”. Just make smaller scope, but absolutely insane games.

Dude!! NHL Hitz! I wish they would bring that back. It was hockey with a small crew plus it was like street fighter when the fights would break out. It was so fun and I'm not a sports guy at all. But I love some good arcade style sports games with stupid fun mini games and tweaks

I remember playing NBA Street Vol 2 for a WHOLE YEAR. And that was the ONLY game I played. Filled out every create a player slot. I actually beat the game at its hardest making sure the cpu scored 0 points. Damn near was unbeatable in that game. My friend kept saying time to get a ps3 already since I was still rocking the 2 at the time, refused to move on because of how much I loved playing that game.
    Great memories of that series.

Jake, I love your advice to people wanting to break into game journalism, and it SO transfers to other fields as well. As a creative (my field is music and sound design) I’ve been on both sides of the hiring process, and people who had a good portfolio and were clearly passionate about their work were the ones who caught our eye. And I got my best job ever by doing extra work to show what I could do for a second interview. Schooling is great, of course, but the work speaks for itself. Yeah - if you want to do it, do it! And thanks for sharing your setup, always been curious what mics people are using.

Hearing your answer about the Jedi Knight series made me think of another question for you! If you had to choose one: would you either want a new Kotor or Jedi Knight? It's a tough choice, but I would say kotor. And not an MMO, like a legit RPG.

my favorite miyazaki movie is grave of the fireflies. it is set in post ww2 japan but the aesthethic and vibes for me really are amazing. its like dark souls in a way, its really off beat for miyazaki since he usually is wholesome but its a great story about how unforgiving the world can be

God… NBA & NFL Street (along with that BMX game where you could play as the Slim Jim guy (oh, it was Dave Mira Freestyle BMX 2), the Tony Hawks games, Waveracer, SSX, Need for Speed & Burnout, & for some reason Mia Hamm Soccer- which was way better than a N64 soccer game has any right to be) we’re basically the only sports games I ever played, but they were so sick. The soundtracks alone on NBA Street Vol. 1 & 2 were some of the best in any games ever… There are a lot of games that had some catchy hip-hop on them- usually just whatever pop-rap was on the radio at the time… But NBA Street had a really well-curated set of genuine hip-hop classics, from Golden Era (& even pre-Golden Era) bangers to some deep cuts that I would never expect to see pop up in a video game… And despite being a pretty diverse range of songs & artists, they pretty much all contributed to a very specific vibe that really set the tone for the game perfectly & gave it so much more replayability. Some of the Skate & Tony Hawks games did include some real hip-hop, but always mixed in with some mid, more recent Top 40/crunk type stuff, & a lot of pop & punk & ska & other stuff (which, no hate on other genres- I listen to all kinds of stuff- but it definitely prevents them from having that singular focus on doing a perfect hip-hop soundtrack)… Those Street games stand out in my memory because the sound they cultivated was so specific & iconic & unified around the classic late 80s to 90s hip-hop vibe, which is a lot of my favorite music of all time.
The games were also just mechanically really brilliant. Fluid & fun to play, had great single-player & multiplayer modes (the one thing I miss about console gaming is sitting side by side with my brother & playing games like that, whereas PC gaming generally encourages LAN party style arrangements at best, & more often just communicating on mics at a distance.
Also, the most fun thing about Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2, bar none, was the multiplayer bail mode, where you would get more points the more beat up you got during a bail (so if you got hit by a train & went flying you’d get like 100,000 points), & by holding some combo of like 4-5 buttons on the GameCube controller, your character would just let go of the bike & go rag-doll instantly, & you could kind of vaguely control their body a little bit, & make them grab onto things with their hands… It was elementary with the game technology they had at the time, but it was so hilarious & janky & fun… They should include that in every skating/BMX/snowboarding game as far as I’m concerned.

You should watch all Myazaki movies, there are like only 11 or so. Start with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and go chronology.
If you don't want to do that, watch:
    1. Spirited Away
    2. Howl's Moving Castle
    3. My Neighbor Totoro
But I am rewatching them right now and they are all very good, and there is great variety.

Porco Rosso is the one I always recommend because it's probably the best at showing all sides of Miyazaki's movie making.
If you like Porco Rosso you like Miyazaki. Other Miyazaki movies always try to do one thing and one thing only, which might or might not resonate with you depending on mood or expectations or tastes, whereas Porco Rosso does them all and it does them really really well. Infact, I've yet to meet someone IRL who doesn't think Porco Rosso is their favourite (if they've seen it)
Source: love movies, i don't really like anime, and I've seen them all of Miyazaki

Jake, my dude, you are not one to go down the most traveled road. So don’t go to the Miyasaki deep end, start with PORCO ROSSO: ace pilot turned into a pig by a mysterious curse, tries to make his way as a mercenary pilot in the years between wars. There are dog fights between biplanes and seaplanes, lots of italian tropes and great music.
