    I love how everyone is so quick so point out that this recipe won’t last indefinitely and honestly.. I think Emmy knows that.. that’s why she put a question mark in the video title. Also since she did dehydrate the food it might last a bit in an air tight container or packaging like she mentioned but yeah definitely not indefinitely.

      I am not worried about Emmy, nor is my concern about her presentation, but if you read the comments, many people say they are going to make a huge batch to store. Those are the people I'm concerned about, when these should be stored in the fridge and used within five days. I think the originator of this recipe who claimed long shelf life is to blame, and extremely irresponsible. If we're going to survive disasters and shortages, food safety is key!

      I mean honestly normal oats will last longer. So will dried raisins. Might not be warm, but soak it in water overnight and eat em both together. Buts, Rice, Oatmeal all have a long shelf live UNTIL moisture is introduced.

    Survival rations sounds like something safe to keep for a long time. I don't think anyone should be preparing these as long life survival rations, because the milk powder will probably cause spoilage, and the mix had not been heated enough to kill microorganisms after being moistened and mixed. For long term rations at home unopened packets of the ingredients would be safer and longer lasting.
    If you want a very basic granola bar for short term use I suppose these would be ok but I'm sure a regular granola bar (or just granola) would be nicer. So I think this is a recipe that really didn't need to exist.

    As a homemade survival ration, I'd just stop at the 3:04 mark and bag and vacuum seal the oatmeal/dried milk mixture. There's really no reason to go any further until an actual need arises. Water and foil just add needless weight to the pack or bug out bag.

    • @Magpiebard
      @Magpiebard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd have to wonder though about the water and foil playing some background roles that are needed for storage/use. Oats with powder can kinda be a nightmare to store because the powders just sort of fall thru. Once mixed, the worry would be each time it was brought out and shaken the proportions get out of whack. The liquid it contains also makes it a far more usable consistence for using ~outside~ of the home. In a house you have access (one hopes) to the water needed, a pan and hopefully fuel as well. This stuck in your backpack only really works as a survival 'ration' if you can grab it in an emergency (a time notorious for not being great for cooking) and formed it performs that task in a way loose never would. And the foil, in addition to being useful as a container in a situation you have to grab and GO has quite a few applications outside of food, but is also a light blocker which would help the ration stay usable longer. In a shelter in place, just loose and sealed (although, at that point, why you wouldn't just make oatmeal seems weird) it would work on your shelves a treat. But on the move, a solid bar/puck form seems like the only option. (Can you tell the current grocery price misery now has me overthinking things like this. I think need to stop watching/reading the news for a few days, it's making my brain all panicky.) All of that, and I would even be wondering a bit if the adding of the milk and jello powder to the oats makes adding the liquid and then drying it an absolute need - oats have fat naturally occurring. Would the oats start rehydrating the dairy and jello and make it likelier to grow mold and spoil? Actually, now that I've actually typed all this out - what do you think? Are any of my arguments sounding valid as potential barriers/requirements for the longevity of the ration or am I muddling myself up here. Would be seriously interested in hearing your thoughts (as well as any other poor sod who reads all the way thru this nonsense!) about this.

    • @Maria_Erias
      @Maria_Erias 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Magpiebard Adding water to the mix with the powdered milk shortens the shelf life. Adding water to powdered milk basically turns it into normal milk. Dehydrating it will then help it last a little while, but you'd really need to vacuum seal them with oxygen absorbers. And by the time you've done all that, you're better off just buying some Daytrex emergency rations or something.
      If you want to make something that's going to be shelf stable for long periods of time, look up making hard tack. It's basically just flour, water, and salt, baked until it's about as hard as a roofing tile. Pieces of hard tack, you can throw in some Ziploc bags with an oxygen absorber and they'll easily last months, years. Trying to eat them, though, can be a pain in the butt. Or, more literally, a pain in the tooth. Which is why people generally soaked hardtack in water, coffee, tea, or soups.

    I wonder if you have to use citrus jello because of the citric acid in it. I think I'd prefer this with peach or strawberry jello. I love those flavors of oatmeal. I'd add less sugar and/or use sugar free jello. If the citric acid from citric jello is a key component you could potentially crush a few vitamin c tablets and add them.

      These are intended as rations to use when you're unable to get at food. Leaving out sugar is going to make them less useful as rations and possibly not last as long in storage as the sugar keeps bacteria from being able to feed on them while they're dry.

    Here’s a recipe for Logan bread.
    A 2 x 2“ equals about 4000 cal I believe it might be 3000 which is food for one day for one man who is doing a lot of effort.
    The recipe makes enough for two men for 16 days.
    Logan bread
    1 quart of water
    4 pounds of flour (whole grain)
    1 1/2 pounds of raw sugar or brown sugar
    2 tablespoons baking powder
    12 ounces nonfat dried milk solids
    2 tablespoon sea salt
    2 cups honey
    1cup blackstrap molasses
    1 1/4 cup of oil
    1 cup of sesame seeds
    1 1/2 cup wheat germ
    Preheat oven 300° mix all very well and turn into a big greased roasting pan. Bake one hour. Cut into 32 squares and allowed to air dry until semi dry.
    These are actually good and you must limit yourself because you can eat a weeks worth of food in 20 minutes :-).
    This recipe gives a much better chance for survival because if you’re trying to survive you’re probably burning a lot of calories. Unless you’re hiding in a hole and then something yummy once a day might be good.

      In your estimation, how long do these rations typically tend to last / need to be rotated out?

    • @rejn1420
      @rejn1420 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wmluna381 Of course it depends on the food. I want discovered an underground bomb shelter from the 40s with government supplies in it. I ate them and they were good. At least I didn’t get sick anyway :-). And I have been in starvation situations before and believe me I would’ve eaten anything.But generally I would say that things will last longer than you would think. And much longer than the FDA says. There’s a difference between tastes good and will keep you alive. :-)
