At 6:31 -- the Cardinal is tied onto the rear of the "shuttle train" from the Beech Grove shops near Indianapolis. #517 (a P32-8BWH) is towing a Viewliner sleeper, Viewliner baggage car, and a Superliner Sightseer Lounge that have been at Beech Grove. Whenever cars are released from the shops (about once a week) they put together a shuttle train. Then when the Cardinal coming from New York arrives in Indianapolis, it is coupled to the end of the shuttle, and they proceed as one train to Chicago. Likewise, when equipment needs to go to the shops, a shuttle train is assembled in Chicago and coupled to the front of the Cardinal. When it arrives in Indianapolis the shuttle train is uncoupled and proceeds to Beech Grove, while the Cardinal continues to New York.
Those F40's counted in the "triple header" and "double header" on the Downeaster are actually "cabbage cars"--shells of former locomotives used as combination control cabs and baggage cars.
Close ... it actually is an air whistle. You can see the air line running from the air brake hose up to the upper-level door where the conductor is standing. It's there specifically for such backup moves.
They have been going on each line every 2 days or so as of late. They could come by as early as later today or tomorrow morning. They are inbound on the Fitchburg route as of now
I almost always put all details about each train in my descriptions. I haven’t been able to add the description for this video yet since I’m still backlogged from traveling this week. I will have it updated later today
Amazing catches! 👍
Thanks very much!
Good catch with the Illinois Central unit on the point
Thanks - that was a neat one
@rail_spike_productions what train was that? Probably taken prior to the merger
That was Amtrak’s City of New Orleans as seen in April of 2024
Ah yes, the Illinois Central leading an Amtrak train in the beginning...

0:25 Horn name of this locomotive?
Nice
How did Amtrak double Dekker train have a horn?
It makes that sound when the conductor opens an air valve connected to the coach’s air hoses so that it acts like a whistle

Do you know when the laser extra will cover the Lowell Line next? Or is it already done? It's been a while since i've seen 1643...

@@rail_spike_productionsdo you know if laser train will be down south? On the northeast corridor needham and Worcester or Franklin line?
The plan for this Autumn is to run the laser train on the north side and the wash train on the south side
Captions about what I am looking at might help! ! !
