Wow, 1035 was the first rebuilt engine to hit something on the right-of-way shortly after entering service again from rebuild. Hopefully it was only minor damage sustained in the incident and repairs to it didn’t take too long at BET.

I heard the 1055 is still awaiting its new parts and technology at mpi’s facility. Unbelievable the units are now taking closer to three years, as opposed to originally two years. This is probably due to shortages of parts and workforce issues from the pandemic and a labor strike from employees at mpi in the late summer of 2023, delayed and slowed the process of F40 rebuilds badly. Manufacturing of a diesel passenger locomotive should be 10-23 months at the latest. The 1034 is in testing and is the first newly refurbished unit delivered in nearly 4 months since 1067 in early October. The program was already starting to experience bad delays in 2019, but in 2020, when the coronavirus started and shutdowns of manufacturing facilities around the U.S. and operating at reduced capacity, this really slowed down the rebuilding process and 1035 was the last unit delivered in almost a year, with 1074 finally appearing on TH-cam videos and photos on CSX on December 27, 2020 heading home from mpi, that big gap in between shipment of 1035 and 1074 was bad. All 27 units were expected to be shipped back to Boston by late autumn of 2021 as it stated in the second contract when it was awarded to mpi in mid-2019, but the completion of the entire rebuild program is almost three in a half years late by this point, crazy and not “called-for”. 😮😱😡😤🤮🤬

The good news is that 1055 is now officially in testing at mpi in boise, idaho as a 3C and put out onto the test track outside the plant. Sad to have seen it struggle so badly and blowing off black smoke at newburyport back in June of 2021 and having to be rescued by the 1121 and an all-MBB coach consist which is extremely rare to see (especially on the north side), to be brought back to BET in Boston at North Station as a double draft to be repaired in the shop. MBTA should’ve sent it off to be rebuilt right away after this incident happened, instead of just repairing it at BET. But sadly it wasn’t shipped off to mpi until November of 2022, which meant it had to stay in service for another year and a half and experienced reliability issues and continuing to be in decrepit condition as years passed on, sad and unbelievable for MBTA to have continued to run such decrepit diesel locomotives for so long instead of doing an extensive rebuild much sooner, but waiting for the units to be in the most worst condition possible to start an extensive overhaul program, when they were like 30 years old back in 2017 when the overhaul with mpi began.

0:15, Oops, One ditch light is out on 1057. Did anybody else notice, or was it just me. MBTA or MPI (the principal locomotive remanufacturer, performing the mid life overhauls of the F40s), MBTA should’ve addressed it right away to MPI and have the engine shipped back to Idaho to fix that. Recently rebuilt and already a ditch light was blown out, come on MPI, employees should do a heavy and complete inspection of the engine (from top cab and roof to undercarriage and wheels) after rebuilding is done to see if everything (components and all new and modern technology installed on the nearly 40-year-old diesel passenger locos) are working properly and don’t break when the engine enters service again for MBTA back in Boston.

2039 sounded like it didn’t have any HEP and the engine was off and wasn’t running. The coaches didn’t have any power and the lights were off in all of the coaches. So it possibly had an engine failure or some sort. Was 1115’s set rescuing 2039’s set and towing it back to Boston so 2039 could be repaired at BET? Sorry, I’m confused. Darn hsps always breaking down. They’re a piece of junk in my opinion. MBTA should’ve went with mpi for more mp36s instead of opting to buy forty hsps from them in 2015, for $240 Million yet. More than 200 Million US Dollars on piece of junk and I’m pretty sure my term of unreliability of correct? Is it? The T had a lot of issues and problems with these engines in recent years and in the short term. The screamer f40phs are retired, means they aren’t in revenue service anymore, or are out of service. The hsps replaced them in the summer of 2015, when the last one, No. 1013, ran for the final time pulling a 5-coach set to Newburyport on July 10th, 2015. On the way back “it was officially dead” and towed by 2012’s set as a double draft back to Boston, where it was removed from service “permanently” and sadly never to run again. Sorry for the long comment, just trying to explain why the hsps are complete junk and other people might agree or maybe they won’t and say they are modern, reliable and a good fit for the T’s engineers and passengers to bring reliability up, but it looks like all of those things decreased terribly since late 2016 and mid 2017, which is pretty sad and not “called for”. 😩😡😭💔💔💔💔💔💔

so much tooting and clanging! American trains are so noisy! In europe we give the cars a red light and expect them to obey it. We add a few more flashing lights and automatic barriers in case they miss the standard traffic light, but that's enough. If the train hits the car the the car is at fault. i realise that the car is king in the states but a 500 ton train just can't stop on a dime!
