    That camera is much bigger than I expected, and the images look great. The pump advance is fun and reminds me of Minox and Minolta 16mm "spy" cameras. I've shot both Tiger and Orca from Lomography and enjoyed the results.

      I have to admit that I was surprised by the images, I really like them! I mean, having never shot 110 film, I wasn't sure what to expect, but the scans exceeded my expectations. I like Tiger and Orca so much that I'm actually considering picking up a Lomomatic now, ha ha!

    This camera seems to be a good modern alternative to a lot of compact point & shoot 110 cameras back in the day. Great pictures you took and it’s great to see 110 as a format still thriving

    Surprisingly good photos for the camera. I have used Orca a few times in a couple of my Minolta 110 and my pentax auto 110 SLR with some success, I do also have a 110 mask for my enlarger but have not managed to get a darkroom up and running again yet. The great thing about the B&W 110 is its easy to develop at home either using an old Paterson tank (Can't remember which model) or Jobo do a 110 real. I have generally used the 110 cameras as a companion camera to using my RB and sometimes a 35mm SLR. Glad you had fun and it's great to see a new video from you.

    • @JessHobbs
      @JessHobbs  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I really liked both films, and I'm honestly thinking about buying a Lomomatic so that I can shoot them again! I've seen some 110 reels for Patterson tanks for sale, but my local lab did such a great job that I'd probably just keep giving them my business, ha ha! 110 cameras do make great companions, especially to an RB!

    As someone who worked in camera stores and photo labs in the 90s, I was deeply scarred by 110. Back then the cameras were universally (I know there were some good ones, but their owners definitely did not bring their film to our shops!) garbage, the film was a real pain in the backside to process, and the end results were always terrible. Without exception. I hated those things and every roll of film they spat out.
    All of which to say, delighted to see that your experience was far less traumatic and that good results are now possible with 110. 😁 More options for film shooters is a good thing.

    Very nice review! If you think that is small, check out the Rollei A110. It is literally half the size of the Lomomatic, has a sharper Tessa lens with variable apertures, greater shutter speed range and shows your set focus distance in the viewfinder.
    It also sets the film speed automatically.

    Thank you for this video. The controls on the Lomomatic 110 take some getting used to, I have lost some phographs though user error. I like results from bright sunlight best, there is a sunny depth to immages. I have also pushed boundaries and used the f2.8 night setting in bright light with Tiger 200 and got beautiful photographs, the lens renders immages beautifully wide open.

    Really nice photos, i like them all. Really surprising that you got such a good quality with this small negative size. I got my first 110 camera in the 80s, it was a christmas present from my grand parents. I shot many photos with it. A few years ago, when i restarted film photography I thought 110-film is a dead format. So i was surprised when Lomography released the Lomomatic. The camera looks really interesting. But for me the problem are the developing costs of the film. Where i live (Germany) most of the labs don''t develop 110 film so you have to send the film to a special lab. So 110-film isn't for daily shooting here. But when i want to shoot 100 film i still have my old camera (here it's called "Pocketkamera"). So i can buy some fresh film and shoot it with the old camera 🙂

      Thanks! I have to admit that I am surprised at the results I got, I wasn't sure what to expect, but they exceeded those expectations!
      One thing I didn't mention in the video is the cost/shortage of labs. I'm lucky to have a great lab only an hour's drive away, but I know not everyone has that luxury.
      It is a fun format to shoot once in a while though, so I am thinking about picking up one of these for myself!

    great pics, nice colour, no too much grain, the vertical strip I see in the left in some pics may be shutter related issue, also seen in another reviews, at some velocities the shutter exposes different in the left side of the pic, may be it will be fixed using the camera a couple of times

  • @MichaelZieschang
    @MichaelZieschang หลายเดือนก่อน

    The format is completely out of my workflow. As I'm developing my negs myself I opt for a halfframe camera instead which 35mm film I can handle in my setup.
    Speaking of festivals, I brought my tiny Penti 2 halfframe camera to Wacken this year and it was the perfect fit, although I tend to medium format lately.

    Don't think just shoot, sounds like a recipe for average pictures.
    110 cartridges and cameras are the products of a bygone age. An age where digital photography didn't exist. Where smartphones with very useable digital cameras built into they didn't exist. I know I was there! Back then 110 pocket cameras were used by people who today just use their smartphone. It is in short obsolete.
    It's essentially 16mm film repackaged into a cassette for easy loading. the negative is a little more than a quarter the size of a full frame 35mm neg, so making even an A4 print is a stretch. However frame for frame it costs almost as much as 120 roll film. There are some folks around that think using film is "cool", but can't be bothered with all that working out the exposure, focus points, depth of field etc. "that's science and I'm and Artist!" This camera and film combination will suit them very well.
    If you want to photograph on film with a pocket camera, get yourself a used Olympus AX. It's full frame 35mm, so film is readily availabe cheap and easy to get processed. It a has a 35mm wide angle lens focusing from 0.58m to infinity, wit a rangefinger in the viewfinder. Aperture poirty metering from f2.8 to f22. The clamshell lens cap protects the whole camera and it will fit in a pocket. Unless you are body searched when you go to a concert or festival, no one will know you have it on you. Even if they find it, it's clearly not a professional camera.
    The only downside is, I doubt anyone will send you one with some film to make a video about.

      Different strokes for different folks! 🤷‍♀️

    • @cdl0
      @cdl0 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good comment; I agree. 110 was not the only 16 mm format: Minolta also had a range of cameras which used an even smaller cartridge. About small 35 mm cameras, first I think you mean Olympus XA, not AX btw. Even tinier and more pocketable is the Olympus µ-II, which also has a high-quality 35 mm f/2.8 lens, and that is not the only alternative in this class. Nevertheless, I am impressed by the quality that Jess did achieve with this camera. It is noticeably better than I remember back in the day. Even the luxury 110 cameras such as the Pentax 110 SLR was rather disappointing. Maybe Lomography have finally worked out how to make a good camera for this format.

    • @neilfulcher9298
      @neilfulcher9298 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@cdl0Of course it's an XA, and it was on the table in front of me when I wrote the post!
      I wonder where the Lomography film is made. Do they have their own factory to make the emulsion, or is it made somewhere else and rebranded?

    • @cdl0
      @cdl0 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@neilfulcher9298 LOL! Very funny! I have my Olympus µ-II on the sofa beside me to make sure that I typed the name correctly, as well. 🙂 In fact, the exact lettering is "Olympus µ[mju:]-II". I also have here, _inter alia,_ a Pentax PC35 AF-M which I was wondering if it might be another worthy candidate for this discussion, but maybe a bit too big and chunky. It could be a suitably funky choice for festivals, though. As for the film, one possibility is Orwo, because the qualities of Lomography's films remind me of Agfa from long past times.

    • @neilfulcher9298
      @neilfulcher9298 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@cdl0 Yes all three would be good as pocket cameras, It's the clamshell lens / viewfinder protection that makes them so. As to the quality of the images from the Lomomatic. It's not that small a camera nor is it that cheap. It has a decent zone focusing lens and basic aperture priority metering system. That coupled with the improved quality of modern emulsions I would think means it gives the best quality images possible from the format. My main complaint is the size of the negative, it's tiny!
      The film may well be Owo. When it comes to manufacturers of C41 compatible emulsions sold in master rolls, there's a limited choice. Kodak, Fuji, Owo, and Shanghai (China) are the only ones that spring to mind. I'm told that the box for the film has made in America written on it... Lomography themselves are very tight lipped about it!
