Thank god for You Tube...I taped this event on VHS and couldnt find it...Eric Paulson doesnt get the respect he deserves...this guy trained with Rickson Gracie in the mid 80's....This tourney also shows how much of a animal Renzo was...big difference between him and Royce.
Submitting and submission holds are 2 different things that have the same outcome. They are called "submission holds" because they make the opponent submit, but you can still submit without being put in a hold. To submit means to give up and you can give up by being punched too many times (which is what happened here) or if you're too tired to continue.
Half the bracket was striking wins only the other had full NHB. The finals had full NHB. The theory was that it would be a show down between strikers and grapple rs in the end. Was an experimental format.
I have just about every Erik Paulson DVD instructional there is. Killers Leglocks 1, 2 and 3, 6 armbar DVDs on one DVD, Killer Chicken Wings 1 and 2, Quick Kills, Neck Cranks 1 and 2, the Hilicopoter DVD, Killer Tackles and Takedowns, CSW Student 10 DVDs, Instructor DVDs, CSW Camps, Takedowns from the Knees DVD, Striking DVD, Ground and Pound DVD, Best Defense DVDs, Black Belt DVD, Private Lessons DVD with Erik Paulson, MMA seminar DVD with Erik Paulson and more.
One side of the brackets had the no submission rule, the other (Renzo's) was regular NHB. The winner of the striking (Shootboxing) bracket would fight the winner of the NHB bracket in the finals. Not a bad idea.
Half the bracket was striking wins only the other had full NHB. The finals had full NHB. The theory was that it would be a show down between strikers and grapple rs in the end. Was an experimental format.

@nrallenuk Hm, strange. So was this the striker's bracket and that is why they only allowed them to be on the ground for a few minutes without submissions? And if so, why wouldn't Paulson have competed in the grappler's bracket?
I remember this! I was in to jkd at the time lol Hoped Paulson had skills while assuming the thicker more muscular fighter would win. Great fight a little adversity for Erik, nothing he couldn't handle.
It's not stupid. This was during the infancy of MMA where they were trying different sets of rules to see what can draw the most crowds. UFC at that time did not dominate this type of cage fighting and they were all trying to be the premier venue.
erik paulson was barred from rickson gracie's academy because he participated in this event because renzo participated in this tournament in which he won.
As a 5'7 individual I was going for McCully, but, as a person with a beautiful flowing long mane, when he started yanking on that bun I was hoping for no mercy from Paulson.
Like the under arm pit lunchboxes to muscle boys face. Wonder if Lesner picked that up from him. Seriously though, Paulson is badass! Triangle, mount, knees, and combos:D
No submission’s can also be taken as “No willing quitters”. You had to go through the bare knuckle process to get to the other fights. So, no one should be talking shit about this fight. This was hella interesting. You can hair pull and head butt, that changes a lot of things. You can grab the cage, you can grab the shorts, hit the back of the head, neck and spine. Ouch
Renzo was lucky he didn't have to take on Vale or Bitonio. I believe Vale or Bitinio would've beat Renzo by sheer strength & brutality. Renzo got a cakewalk against the very unviolent Spijkers, smaller wrestler & the zero-grappling Warring. He was very lucky that Vale & Bitonio eliminated each other.
Half the bracket was striking wins only the other had full NHB. The finals had full NHB. The theory was that it would be a show down between strikers and grapple rs in the end. Was an experimental format.
Dear genius, What did BL call what he was teaching before 1967? "Jun Fan Gung Fu" Even the JKD concepts guys refer to the old style as Jun Fan Kickboxing. Having trained in the JKD concepts (Joe Maffe) school, and the older Gung Fu style (James DeMille), I think I actually do know what I'm talking about, sorry.
P.S. I'm not talking about the new decision to copywrite "Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do". I'm talking about the names of the pre and post-1967 stages of what he taught.
I remember watching Eric Paulson back then fighting, and guys would always pull his hair. Finally he cut it. No submissions that was ridiculous, that's why this organization didn't last. Eric would have submitted him in the first 30 seconds of the fight.
A lot of mma guys got a lot of moves and techniques in practice but you don't see them using it in a real fight they usually just wrestle and hug each other.
I don't get it. Why have a no submission rule in an MMA match? Can't be a safety reason, they're alot safer than beating the hell out of your opponent.
Bruce lee not called jun fan to what he practice, he called jeet kune do (or jun fan jeet kune do), and jeet kune do its a concept no a style like muay thay.
World Combat Championship had really weird rules. The can go to the ground but they can’t use submissions? Paulson would have won far quicker if he was allowed to use his submission skill set-of I recall in this same event James Warring latched onto Paulsons hair and never let go-again with Paulson not allowed to use his submissions. Oketely
@@barrygroeneveld6901 I'll watch what I want, like a said MMA favors grapplers and Wrestlers, this no submission rule actually forces cowards to stand and fight.
Wow, I really like this set of rules compared to UFC's. Lack of gloves and limited time on ground make the fight more interesting. I personally would shorten the time on ground to only 1min while allowing submissions and wrist/ankle locks. Besides, Michael Bolton beat the shit out of McCully!
I think Paulson would have submitted him 10 times in the first round!
Eric is super tough. Took a seminar in the Carolinas w him. Super impressive.
Same but in Va
Thank god for You Tube...I taped this event on VHS and couldnt find it...Eric Paulson doesnt get the respect he deserves...this guy trained with Rickson Gracie in the mid 80's....This tourney also shows how much of a animal Renzo was...big difference between him and Royce.
WCC: "NO SUBMISSION!"
Also WCC: "Winner by submission...."
There's no point in banning submissions in an event that allows grappling. I can see why WCC could not compete with the early UFC.

They separated strikers and grapplers until the finals. If you were labeled a striker, you couldn't win by submission.
😂😂😂
Winner by tap out is more like it
'Heartbreak Kid' Erik Paulson.
"no submission" no wonder why the WCC went the way of the dinos...
SuperElite27000000

Fucking of course

The CEO of the promotion, his wife threatened to divorce him if he continued funding the promotion. That's why the WCC ended.
i trained with both Sean and Eric. they're both top notch fighters and very good guys. And yes, Eric cut his hair after this fight. -_o
So 90's! Love it.
What the fuck kinda rules are these?!? Subs are illegal but grabbing the cage, pulling hair, and headbutting is legal, what?!?!?
that is kinda funny, isn't it. wonder about eye gouging and groin shots.
Real fights shouldn't have rules UFC is not a real fight
No submissions?? It's like telling a boxer he can't use his jab and hook.
head butting, elbows to the cerebellum, atomic wedgies.. the good ole days.
That's the craziest thing I have ever heard with no submissions!!
Half the tournament bracket was set up to encourage strikers to be able to fight without worry of facing someone with submision cross training

I was waiting for Cecil Peoples to jump in when Mcully tapped and yell "NO SUBMISSIONS" in his face.
Erik Paulson's my coach :) I train at his gym.

I know this is old, but had to mention....and wedgies are good to go!
Those blows to the back of the head are insane
If he dies he dies.
lol no submission, no gloves, no rounds, headbutt and striking to the back of the head... these fights were very hardcore
They were almost real
i can understand no win by sub but cant you apply one to get a better position.

Dan D
I just don't know why Paulson competed......
Cecil Peoples scored it 30-27 for the hot dog vendor
Cecil Peoples looks like the trainer from Mike Tyson's Punchout.
I remember EP when he was a trainer at Hermosa Boxing Works. Good times.
UFC & WCC was the best mma championships of 90's !!
IVC
Headbuts hair pulling elbows to the back of the head and no submissions!?!?
Gotta love the early days.
No submission is lije no submission but you can elbow the base of the skull??
This kind of fighting right here is more awesome than the current UFC. These men had NO GLOVES on.
...and no nut cups. Real man fight.
When will they learn?
Why was there a "2 minutes on the ground/no submissions rule" in an MMA fight? That was stupid as hell, even for MMA fights in 1995.
@shampar10 It's the WCC shootboxing bracket
Great Coach Paulson won with his indomitous spirit 💪💪💪🥊🥋👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Why was there no submissions?

First saw him in Bloodsport 3 as Kumite fighter, role name Stelio
Some refs actively look for reasons to interfere in the fights. He was one of the worst.
Triangle was there for awhile..
Its stupid for them to say "no submission" when they allow take downs, throws and clinching.
